While there are many diatribes against the modern Word of Faith
Movement and as many defenses of it, little scholarly work has
investigated, analyzed, and compared and contrasted modern faith
teaching with earlier evangelical writers. Only Believe is such a
ground-breaking book written for non-specialists and scholars.
Among its many accomplishments, Only Believe . . . * theologically
engages both the teachings of the Word of Faith Movement and their
critics, examining from the unique viewpoint of the elliptical
nature of truth the counter-polarities of faith teaching and
practice; * traces the origins of faith teachings such as
revelation knowledge, logos and rhema, point of contact, seed
faith, faith as a law and a force, covenant rights and inheritance,
positive confession, and attitudes toward doctors and medicine
through the church fathers, mystics, reformers, Pietists, Puritans,
and the 19th-century Wesleyan, Keswick, and Higher Life holiness
and healing movements; * draws upon the faith teachings and
practices of a wide variety of theological and denominational
backgrounds: Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian/Reformed,
Episcopalian/Anglican, Lutheran, Congregationalist, holiness,
Brethren, Catholic, Pentecostal/charismatic, and many others; *
highlights positive, balanced principles and models of faith of
respected evangelical leaders, guiding the reader away from
questionable teaching and practice and yet encouraging a walk by
faith that is both strong and sound; * contains a treasure house of
preaching, teaching, Bible study, examples of faith, and research
material.
Genuine Gold: The Cautiously Charismatic Story of the Early
Christian and Missionary Alliance documents the supernatural
heritage of the early Christian and Missionary Alliance
(C&MA)-welcoming the supernatural with discernment-and calls
the denomination to embrace again the charismatic dimensions of the
Holy Spirit today and to return to its originally close relation to
the Pentecostal-charismatic movement. Author Paul L. King, C&MA
historian and theologian, shows how the early C&MA, a robustly
evangelical movement, embraced many practices and doctrines of the
new Pentecostal movement following the famous Azusa Street Revival
of 1906. Yet in following decades, the C&MA distanced itself
from the Pentecostal and later charismatic movements. The reasons?
Partly because the C&MA insisted on a non-exclusive view of
speaking in tongues and on discernment-distinguishing the gold of
genuine manifestations of the Holy Spirit from the spurious. But
also because the C&MA allied itself increasingly with
non-Pentecostal evangelicalism. Genuine Gold urges the C&MA to
rekindle the flame of spiritual renewal through its carefully
documented history of the Alliance's early vibrancy.
"I have always been amazed by the paradox presented in Scripture:
the humble are exalted; the hungry are full; the yielded are
powerful; and those who go deeper live a higher life. In Come Up
Higher, Dr. Paul King has masterfully brought together influential
voices from church history who have experienced and written about
the higher life in Christ-the Throne Life. Their voices instruct,
illustrate, and challenge us to live in the heavenlies, with
Christ. Any Christian who desires to see the empowerment of life in
Christ influence his or her walk, worship, or spiritual warfare
will find this powerful collection of insights from 2,000 years of
church history indispensable." -Dr. Gary Benedict, President, The
Christian and Missionary Alliance "Come Up Higher is a great book
It is greatly needed in today's church to bring correction to the
extremes of not having courageous faith, not walking in authority
or power on the one hand; and the other extreme of attempting to
walk in the authority of imputed righteousness, moving in power,
exercising faith, without the holiness of imparted righteousness.
Dr. Paul King's book, Come Up Higher Rediscovering Throne Life-The
Highest Christian Life for the 21st Century, is a well written,
powerful book bringing balance to a subject where balance has often
not been found. I highly recommend it." -Randy Clark, Founder and
President of Global Awakening and the Apostolic Network of Global
Awakening "Come Up Higher Rediscovering Throne Life-The Highest
Christian Life for the 21st Century is another life-changing book
from Paul King. He brings us to the pinnacle of the Christian life
with a privilege that is almost unimaginable and is the clearest
expression of heaven on earth possible. It is about position and
Presence. With great wisdom, Paul deals with both the obstacles and
the overwhelming benefits of this lifestyle. I can't imagine
reading this book without increasing in hunger for a lifestyle that
is almost too good to be true. This is the book that will drive a
person into the secret place without striving or religious
agendas." -Bill Johnson, Author, When Heaven Invades Earth and
Hosting the Presence Bethel Church, Redding, CA
Rediscover the powerful anointing of the Holy Spirit upon women in
ministry in The Christian and Missionary Alliance! Anointed Women
reveals the remarkable stories of women used by God in amazing ways
and documents hundreds of women who served as Alliance pastors,
evangelists, and teachers, planted hundreds of churches, and led
thousands of people to salvation in Christ, healing, and a deeper
Christian life. -- "A deeply researched history and carefully
nuanced analysis. . . . Such a moderate voice should be given
careful attention by every reader."-Dr. Franklin Pyles, President,
The Christian and Missionary Alliance, Canada / / "An invaluable
record of rich treasures. . . . a call to the C&MA to reclaim
its heritage of 'unity in essentials, freedom in non-essentials,
and charity in all things.'" -Leslie Andrews, Ph.D., VP of Academic
Affairs/Provost, Asbury Theological Seminary
