Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

My Kill Adore Him is a collection of poems from Andres Montoya
Poetry Prize-winner Paul Martinez Pompa. With a unique, independent
voice, Martinez Pompa interrogates masculinity, race, language,
consumerism, and cultural identity in poems that honor los
olvidados, the forgotten ones, who range from the usual suspects
brutalized by police to factory workers poisoned by their
environment, from the victim of a homophobic beating in the boys'
bathroom to the body of Juan Doe at the Cook County Coroner's
Office. Some of the poems rely on somber, at times brutal, imagery
to articulate a political stance while others use sarcasm and irony
to deconstruct political stances themselves.

This expanded collection of new and fully revised explorations of
media content identifies the ways we all have been negatively
stereotyped and demonstrates how careful analysis of media
portrayals can create more beneficial alternatives. Not all
damaging stereotypes are obvious. In fact, the pictorial
stereotypes in the media that we don't notice could be the most
harmful because we aren't even aware of the negative, false ideas
they perpetrate. This book presents a series of original research
essays on media images of groups including African Americans,
Latinos, women, the elderly, the physically disabled, gays and
lesbians, and Jewish Americans, just to mention a few. Specific
examples of these images are derived from a variety of sources,
such as advertising, fine art, film, television shows, cartoons,
the Internet, and other media, providing a wealth of material for
students and professionals in almost any field. Images That Injure:
Pictorial Stereotypes in the Media, Third Edition not only
accurately describes and analyzes the media's harmful depictions of
cultural groups, but also offers creative ideas on alternative
representations of these individuals. These discussions illuminate
how each of us is responsible for contributing to a sea of meaning
within our mass culture. 33 distinguished authors as well as new
voices in the field combine their extensive and varied expertise to
explain the social effects of media stereotyping. Includes
historical and contemporary illustrations that range from editorial
cartoons to the sinking of the Titanic Richly illustrated with
historical and up-to-date photographic illustrations Every
chapter's content is meticulously supported with numerous sources

Everyone loves a good villain From the back pages of history,
vivid, entertaining portraits of little-known scoundrels whose
misdeeds range from the simply inept to the truly horrifying.
Even if you're an avid history buff, you've probably never heard of
this disreputable cast of characters: A drunken, ne'er-do-well cop
who abandoned his post at Ford's Theatre, giving assassin John
Wilkes Booth unchallenged access to President Lincoln; a notorious
Kansas quack who made millions by implanting billy goat testicles
in gullible male patients; and America's worst female serial killer
ever. These are three of the memorable but little-known rogues
profiled in this eye-opening and entertaining book.
Dividing his profiles into three categories--villains, scoundrels,
and rogues--author and former "National Geographic" editor Paul
Martin serves up concise, colorful biographies of thirty of
America's most outrageous characters. Whether readers choose to be
horrified by the story of Ed Gein, Alfred Hitchcock's hideous
inspiration for "Psycho," or marvel at the clever duplicity of the
con artist who originated the phony bookie operation portrayed in
"The Sting," there's something here for everyone.
Brimming with audacious, unforgettable characters often overlooked
by standard history books, this page-turner is a must for anyone
with an interest in the varieties of human misbehavior.
World-renown expert, Dr. Paul Martin, has assembled an impressive
list of authors to update the important topic of orthotopic liver
transplantation. The issue provides comprehensive clinical coverage
on this topics as articles are focused from the care of the
pre-transplant patient to the care of the post-transplant patient.
Content also covers the following topics: Transplantation for
Hepatocellular Carcinoma;
Transplantation for Cholangiocarcinoma; Management of Renal
Dysfunction in Liver Transplant Patients; Expanded Donors in Liver
Transplantation; Current Status of Liver Transplantation for HBV;
MELD: End of the First Decade; and Management of Recurrent HCV
Infection.
Often the hepatologist sees patients in consultation, and this
issue focuses on how to deal with diagnosing, treating, and
managing patients in the hospital on a consultation basis. The
Guest Editor has assembled top experts to present articles on the
asymptomatic outpatient with abnormal LFTs, surgery in the patient
with liver disease, issues in long-term care of liver transplant
recipients, management of autoimmune cholestatic liver disease, and
current status of hepatitis vaccination and prophylaxis, to name a
few.
The aim of this syntactic study, first published in 1979, is to
formulate part of a generative grammar of Mohawk. A generative
grammar is a finite set of explicit rules which enumerate the
sentences of the language and which automatically assign to each
sentence its correct grammatical analysis or structural
description. This title will be of interest to students of language
and linguistics.
What happens when two best friends are separated by a tragedy?
How does a survivor move on? This is a story of life, love, and
friendship. Many events parallel John and Clarisse's life. Clarisse
and John become best friends before John has a terrible fall. John
slips into a coma. While family and others give up on any hope of
recovery, Clarisse does not. Her unconditional love for John is a
testament to their friendship. Clarisse fulfills her lifelong
ambition to be an author, writing a book that recounts the
fantastic adventure she wishes John could have. John and his
faithful companion, Forilee, a multicolored falcon; Gesalt, a wood
horse deer; and Getule, a Knu, embark on an eventful mission
through dangerous territory filled with agents of darkness. The
message they seek to leave for those still in the world is of God's
unending love.
This is the story of a special type of men and women, those who
seek to return to society a portion of the good fortune they have
earned and received in their own lives. They are called Lions and,
since 1917, have actively engaged in constructing an organization
that has evolved into one of the world's most powerful forces for
humanitarian progress: The International Association of Lions
Clubs. It is today comprised of nearly 1.3 million members in over
45,000 Lions clubs active in 202 lands spanning the globe. They
speak scores of languages and represent diversified cultures. In
spirit, however, they speak a common language, the language of
voluntary service, responding to an inner drive to answer human
needs and to improve living conditions in their own communities and
the world community. This book expands upon the history of Lions
Clubs International, published in 1991 as "We Serve: The History of
the Lions Clubs." It chronicles the development of the association
from its birth in 1917 at Chicago's LaSalle Hotel in June of that
year and at its first convention at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas
later in October. It relates 90 years of the association's life
span and emphasizes the work of Lions on the world scene, including
the tremendous success of the Lions Clubs International Foundation,
SightFirst, Campaigns SightFirst I and II, programs for youth, and
other activities that have elevated the stature of Lions wherever
they serve. Readers will be impressed with the accomplishments of
the membership and Lions will be moved to take greater pride in
wearing the lapel pin of the association. Non-Lions will come to
understand fully the ideals and determination of those to whom
voluntary service has become a way of life.
This textbook analyses the origins and effects of insider risk,
using multiple real-life case histories to illustrate the
principles, and explains how to protect organisations against the
risk. Some of the most problematic risks confronting businesses and
organisations of all types stem from the actions of insiders –
individuals who abuse their trusted positions by causing harm.
Insiders cause material damage to their employers and society, and
psychological harm to the colleagues and friends they betray. Even
so, many organisations do not have a systematic understanding of
the nature and origins of insider risk, and relatively few have a
coherent and effective system of protective security measures to
defend themselves against that risk. This book describes the
environmental and psychological factors that predispose some
individuals to become malicious insiders, and the most common
pathways by which this happens. It considers how aspects of insider
risk have been altered by shifts in society, including our
increasing reliance on technology and changes in working patterns.
The second half of the book sets out a practical systems-based
approach to personnel security –the system of defensive measures
used to protect against insider risk. It draws on the best
available knowledge from industry and academic research,
behavioural science and practitioner experience to explain how to
make personnel security effective at managing the risk while
enabling the conduct of business. This book will be essential
reading for students of risk management, security, resilience,
cyber-security, behavioural science and business studies, and of
great interest to security practitioners.
Originally published in 1991. "A photojournalist is a mixture of a
cool, detached professional and a sensitive, involved citizen. The
taking of pictures is much more than F-stops and shutter speeds.
The printing of pictures is much more than chemical temperatures
and contrast grades. The publishing of pictures is much more than
cropping and size decisions. A photojournalist must always be aware
that the technical aspects of the photographic process are not the
primary concerns." This book addresses ethics in photojournalism in
depth, with sections on the philosophy in the discipline, on
pictures of victims or disaster scenes, on privacy rights and on
altering images. As important and interesting today as when it was
first in print.

This volume systematically analyses why legal doctrines for the
protection of biodiversity are not sufficiently effective. It
examples implementation in Australia and Brazil, two megadiverse
countries with very differing legal and cultural traditions and
natural environments. Substantial effort goes into the development
and interpretation of legal doctrines for the protection of
biodiversity in national and international law. Despite this,
biodiversity continues in steep decline. Nowhere is this more
evident than in megadiverse countries, such as Australia and
Brazil, which possess the greatest number and diversity of animals
and plants on Earth. The book covers a wide range of topics,
including farming, mining, marine environments, indigenous
interests and governance. Achieving Biodiversity Protection in
Megadiverse Countries highlights specific causes of
underperformance in protecting diverse terrestrial and marine
environments. It provides proposals for more effective
implementation in these two jurisdictions, relevant to other
megadiverse territories, and for biodiversity protection generally.
Each chapter was written by teams of Australian and Brazilian
authors, so that similar issues are considered across both
jurisdictions, to provide both country-specific and generalisable
insights. Achieving Biodiversity Protection in Megadiverse
Countries will be of great interest to students and scholars of
environmental law and governance and biodiversity conservation, as
well as policymakers, practitioners and NGOs working in these
fields.
