HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved,
essential classics. 'Though this be madness, yet there is method
in't.' Considered one of Shakespeare's most rich and enduring
plays, the depiction of its hero Hamlet as he vows to avenge the
murder of his father by his brother Claudius is both powerful and
complex. As Hamlet tries to find out the truth of the situation,
his troubled relationship with his mother comes to the fore, as do
the paradoxes in his personality. A play of carefully crafted
conflict and tragedy, Shakespeare's intricate dialogue continues to
fascinate audiences to this day.

Contrary to conventional clinical skill textbooks written in a
routine, system based approach, "Clinical Examination: A Problem
Based Approach" breaks that mould by presenting clinical cases in a
problem solving manner. The book is composed of in-depth
dissections of case scenarios and their appropriate investigations.
Written by experts from Australia, New Zealand, US and the UK, this
book brings an international perspective to a wide variety of
specialties including, gastroenterology, neurology, rheumatology,
respiratory and the cardiovascular system. Another unique feature
of the book is the chapters on examining the older patient, the
joints and the vascular system. This publication is a must-have for
all medical undergraduates and postgraduates. The author is a
distinguished clinician and educator. He is the recipient of the
Order of Australia (AM) 2009 for "service to medicine and to
medical education through the development of undergraduate and
professional development programs".
Through historical and bibliographical research, and through
analysis of Shakespeare's work, the author places Shakespeare among
the supreme artists of the world. In the first two chapters he
examines the facts about Shakespeare's career as a dramatist and
summarizes the unfavorable judgments created by his early
biographers. In subsequent chapters Professor Alexander establishes
an order among the plays that reveals a gradual development of
Shakespeare's art.
More than ten years ago the International Criminal Court (ICC) was
established as a universal court meant to achieve criminal justice
worldwide. That goal still stands, but so far the Court has
dedicated most of its time and resources to African conflicts in
which international crimes have been committedWhile the ICC can be
said to contribute to criminal justice in Africa, it cannot be
denied that the relationship between the Court and the continent
has been troublesome. The ICC has been accused of targeting Africa,
and many African states do not seem willing to cooperate with the
Court. Debates on Africa and international criminal justice are
increasingly politicised. The authors of this volume all recognise
the current problems and criticism. Yet they do not side with
populist pessimists who, after just over a decade of ICC
experiences, conclude that the Court and international criminal
justice are doomed to fail. Rather, the contributors may be
regarded as cautious optimists who believe there is a future for
international criminal justice, including the ICC. The contributors
use their unique specific knowledge, expertise and experiences as
the basis for reflections on the current problems and possible
paths for improvement, both when it comes to the ICC as such, and
its specific relationship with Africa.

In this extraordinary work, Peter Alexander Meyers shows how the
centerpiece of the Enlightenment--"society "as the symbol of
collective human life and as the fundamental domain of human
practice--was primarily composed and animated by its most
ambivalent figure: Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Displaying this new
"society" as an evolving field of interdependence, "Abandoned to
Ourselves" traces the emergence and moral significance of
dependence itself within Rousseau's encounters with a variety of
discourses of order, including theology, natural philosophy, and
music. Underpinning this whole scene we discover a modernizing
conception of the human Will, one that runs far deeper than
Rousseau's most famous trope, the "general Will." As "Abandoned to
Ourselves" weaves together historical acuity with theoretical
insight, readers will find here elements for a reconstructed
sociology inclusive of things and persons and, as a consequence, a
new foundation for contemporary political theory.
This book introduces polytempic polymicrotonality as a new musical
aesthetic. It proposes music with more than one microtonal tuning
system and discusses examples from the literature to give an
historic framework showing that this tendency has been present
throughout human musical history. Polytempo is a tool for which
polymicrotonal structures can function in relief from its
background, and it acts as a frame, or ground structure, that is
multidimensional, akin to the advancement of perspective in
Renaissance art. The book has historic significance as it is the
only book of its category, or genre, in music that features
polymicrotonality in music composition or production. It displays
examples of music literature for musical precedence in this area,
focusing on Charles Ives's Universe Symphony, unfinished since
1925.
Originally published in 1969. This book is for undergraduates
whether specializing in philosophy or not. It assumes no previous
knowledge of logic but aims to show how logical notions arise from,
or are abstracted from, everyday discourse, whether technical or
non-technical. It sets out a knowledge of principles and, while not
historical, gives an account of the reasons for which modern
systems have emerged from the traditional syllogistic logic,
demonstrating how certain central ideas have developed. The text
explains the connections between everyday reasoning and formal
logic and works up to a brief sketch of systems of propositional
calculus and predicate-calculus, using both the axiomatic method
and the method of natural deduction. It provides a self-contained
introduction but for those who intend to study the subject further
it contains many suggestions and a sound basis for more advanced
study.

Sensationalism and Scientific Explanation is a critical examination
of the view that scientific statements can be understood only in
terms of basic ‘atoms’ of experience, also called
‘sensations’. Presenting different extremes of this view, the
book considers whether it can provide an adequate account of
science as we find it. It explores in detail the sensationalist
account of science set out by Ernst Mach in relation to various
aspects of scientific investigation and theorizing, and puts
forward an argument for the ‘inherent weakness of
sensationalism’. Sensationalism and Scientific Explanation will
appeal to those with an interest in the history and philosophy of
science.

Originally published in 1929, this book contains an examination of
Shakespeare's three-part Henry VI and its 'sequel', Richard III.
Alexander addresses a number of questions regarding the integrity
of the texts of both plays, whether or not Shakespeare wrote them
in collaboration with another author, and possible interpolations
from other plays. This book will be of value to anyone with an
interest in Shakespeare, particularly his histories.
