The Major Metaphors of Evolution - Darwinism Then and Now (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Salvatore J. Agosta, Daniel R. Brooks The Major Metaphors of Evolution - Darwinism Then and Now (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Salvatore J. Agosta, Daniel R. Brooks
R5,248 Discovery Miles 52 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a unified evolutionary framework based on three sets of metaphors that will help to consolidate discussions on evolutionary transitions. Evolution is the unifying principle of life, making identifying ways to apply evolutionary principles to tackle existence-threatening crises such as climate change crucial. A more cohesive evolutionary framework will further the discussions in this regard and also accelerate the process itself. This book lays out a framework based on three dualistic classes of metaphors - time, space, and conflict resolution. Evolutionary transitions theory shows how metaphors can help us understand selective diversification, as Darwin described with his "tree of life". Moreover, the recently proposed Stockholm paradigm demonstrates how metaphors can help shed light on the emergence of complex ecosystems that Darwin highlighted with his "tangled bank" metaphor. Taken together, these ideas offer proactive measures for coping with existential crises for humanity, such as climate change. The book will appeal to biologists, philosophers and historians alike.

Technical Challenges of Multipollutant Air Quality Management (Paperback, 2011 ed.): George M. Hidy, Jeffrey R. Brook, Kenneth... Technical Challenges of Multipollutant Air Quality Management (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
George M. Hidy, Jeffrey R. Brook, Kenneth L. Demerjian, Luisa T. Molina, William T. Pennell, …
R5,340 Discovery Miles 53 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent critiques of air quality management approaches currently employed in developed and many developing countries have suggested that efficiencies could be achieved if air quality management practices shifted from pollutant-by-pollutant approaches to a comprehensive multipollutant approach in which emission reduction decisions are based on relative risk and evaluated on their effectiveness in meeting environmental and health goals. This book assesses our technical readiness to undertake such an approach, and it outlines the technical developments that will be needed to achieve a risk-based approach air quality management that includes means for measuring the effectiveness of management decisions.

An Assessment of Natural Hazards and Disasters in Canada (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2003): David Etkin,... An Assessment of Natural Hazards and Disasters in Canada (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2003)
David Etkin, C.E. Haque, Gregory R. Brooks
R4,514 Discovery Miles 45 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The problems and issues of natural hazards and disasters, both globally and in Canada, are becoming increasingly important since the costs of extreme natural events have been escalating, and significant vulnerabilities exist in Canadian society. Without thoughtful and effective mitigation, these costs and human suffering are likely to continue to increase. An assessment of knowledge, research, and practice in risk, hazards and disasters fields is a fundamental step towards the goal of prevention and mitigation.

This book on natural hazards and disasters in Canada is the first comprehensive interdisciplinary publication on this subject, and is the result of a national assessment on this topic. A variety of papers from the physical and social sciences explores both the risks associated with these hazards, and adaptive strategies that can be used to reduce those risks.

Audience: This excellent collection of papers is intended for academics, professionals and practitioners involved in hazard reduction activities who wish to obtain a better understanding of Canadian natural hazards.

Bringing the Sun Down to Earth - Designing Inexpensive Instruments for Monitoring the Atmosphere (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): David... Bringing the Sun Down to Earth - Designing Inexpensive Instruments for Monitoring the Atmosphere (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
David R. Brooks
R2,958 Discovery Miles 29 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1998, my colleague, Forrest Mims, and I began a project to develop inexpensive handheld atmosphere monitoring instruments for the GLOBE Program, an international environmental science and education program that began its operations on Earth Day, 1995. GLOBE's goal was to involve students, teachers, and scientists around the world in authentic partn- ships in which scientists would develop instrumentation and experimental protocols suitable for student use. In return, data collected by students and their teachers would be used by scientists in their research. This kind of collaboration represented a grand vision for science education which had never before been attempted on such a scale, and we embraced this vision with great enthusiasm. Between 1998 and 2006, Forrest Mims and I collaborated on the development of several instruments based on Mims' original concept of using light emitting diodes as spectrally selective detectors of sunlight, which was first published in the peer-reviewed literature in 1992. These instruments have evolved into a set of tools and procedures for monitoring the transmission of sunlight through the atmosphere, and they can be used to learn a great deal about the composition of the atmosphere and the dynamics of the Earth/atmosphere/sun system. If measurements with these instruments are made properly, they have significant scientific value, as well.

The Stockholm Paradigm - Climate Change and Emerging Disease (Paperback): Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P Hoberg, Walter A Boeger The Stockholm Paradigm - Climate Change and Emerging Disease (Paperback)
Daniel R. Brooks, Eric P Hoberg, Walter A Boeger
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The contemporary crisis of emerging disease has been a century and a half in the making. Human, veterinary, and crop health practitioners convinced themselves that disease could be controlled by medicating the sick, vaccinating those at risk, and eradicating the parts of the biosphere responsible for disease transmission. Evolutionary biologists assured themselves that coevolution between pathogens and hosts provided a firewall against disease emergence in new hosts. Most climate scientists made no connection between climate changes and disease. None of these traditional perspectives anticipated the onslaught of emerging infectious diseases confronting humanity today. As this book reveals, a new understanding of the evolution of pathogen-host systems, called the Stockholm Paradigm, explains what is happening. The planet is a minefield of pathogens with preexisting capacities to infect susceptible but unexposed hosts, needing only the opportunity for contact. Climate change has always been the major catalyst for such new opportunities, because it disrupts local ecosystem structure and allows pathogens and hosts to move. Once pathogens expand to new hosts, novel variants may emerge, each with new infection capacities. Mathematical models and real-world examples uniformly support these ideas. Emerging disease is thus one of the greatest climate change-related threats confronting humanity. While time is short, the danger is great, and we are largely unprepared, The Stockholm Paradigm offers hope for managing the crisis. By using the DAMA (document, assess, monitor, act) protocol, we can "anticipate to mitigate" emerging disease, buying time and saving money while we search for more effective ways to cope with this challenge.
