It does so by focusing on individual life trajectories of a group of people whose adolescence was shaped by the politics of socialism and the transitions within it. Through their life histories, Legacies of Socialist Solidarity offers an alternative reading of Mozambique s socialist past with important repercussions for the present. At the center of the book are the life histories of a group of then youth who attended one of the largest educational exchange projects between two socialist countries, Mozambique and former East Germany, in the 1980s. Having been educated in East Germany to become part of a future socialist elite back home, the book s protagonists returned to a Mozambique that had meanwhile embarked on the new path of capitalist development. Their qualifications and skills were of little relevance, and the new Mozambican government regarded them as a threat rather than an asset. The book analyzes the life courses of some of those who spent their adolescence in East Germany with a focus on personal aspirations, political orientation, collective memories, and shared horizons. It shows lasting legacies of socialist beliefs and practices. In placing those into the context of the broader political developments in Mozambique, the book explores an important dimension for the understanding of contemporary Mozambique. In addition, it makes a significant contribution to the comprehension of socialist cosmopolitanism and resulting patterns of identity and belonging, and to the wider literature on post-socialist change, the decentering of Cold War histories, and the pervasiveness of the political in everyday lives."

In this special issue review articles summarize the most outstanding features of microorganisms that can survive under extreme conditions. These microorganisms are adapted to living at 100 Degrees C in volcanic springs, at low temperatures in the cold polar seas, at high pressure in the deep sea, at very low and high pH values (pH 0-1 or pH 10-11), or at very high salt concentrations (35%). The latest findings on the molecular biology and the protein structure of these exotic organisms are presented. During the past few years the worlds has reverberated of names like Seveso, Love Canal, Lekkerkerk, Times Beach, just to name the most publicized ones. All these names are connected with hazardous or toxic waste, waste from business and industry, especially the chemical industry. The list is endless because there are, all over the world, many thousands of "points noirs" not yet discovered or identified old lagoons and landfills, polluted rivers, estuaries, and harbors needing remedial action, which undoubtedly will reveal more unpleasant secrets of the chemical industry's past. It is not an exaggerated statement that chemists of the past have paid too much attention to the composition of new products while neglecting the disposition of byproducts, i.e., chemical waste. Admittedly, during the last decade this attitude has changed dramatically. Although we cannot yet properly speak of a new science of peri ontology (the theory of residues), we seem to be headed towards substantiated rules, analyses, disposal protocols, definitions and remedial practices in handling the problems of chemical waste. Especially during the last two years comprehensive treatises of the whole complex subject as well as monographs dealing with assorted aspects of waste tech nology have appeared."

Ursprung dieses Buches ist eine gemeinsame, etwa funf jahrige Arbeit der Ver fasser und der Herausgeber auf dem Gebiet des Lasers im Forschungslaboratorium Munchen der Siemens Aktiengesellschaft. Es gibt wohl kaum ein anderes Teil gebiet der modernen Physik und Technik (vielleicht ausgenommen das der Halb leiter), auf dem im letzten Jahrzehnt die zeitliche Dichte der Veroeffentlichungen so gross war wie auf dem des Lasers. Ausserdem hat dieses Fachgebiet als Grund lage eine Vielzahl recht verschiedener Spezialwissenschaften. Die Fulle und Viel faltigkeit des Stoffes sowie die Existenz von drei Laserarten, die sich durch ihre den Werkstoffen angepassten Anregungsmechanismen unterscheiden, waren An lass fur den Entschluss, mehrere Autoren heranzuziehen, von denen jeder einige Jahre auf einem der Teilgebiete tatig war. Die dadurch entstandene Gefahrdung einer einheitlichen Darstellung hoffen wir durch gegenseitige Abstimmung soweit wie moeglich vermieden zu haben. Zur Vielfaltigkeit der Probleme auf dem Gebiet des Lasers folgendes: Die theo retische Grundlage bildet die Quantenphysik, im besonderen die Theorie der Spek tren. Wellenoptik und geometrische Optik sind weitere Elemente der Physik des Lasers, ebenso die Kristallphysik, insbesondere die optischen Eigenschaften von Einkristallen. All dies sind Teilgebiete der Physik. Daneben existieren Bereiche, die mit der Nachrichtentechnik eng verbunden sind.

Die Haut stellt ein "inderdisziplinares" Organ dar. Mit ihrer Behandlung befassen sich gerade im onkologischen Bereich somit nicht nur Dermatologen, sondern auch Radiolo gen, Chirurgen, Ophthalmologen, Otorhinolaryngologen und Kiefer-und Gesichtschirur gen; deshalb sind Vertreter dieser Disziplinen anlaBlich der diesem Buch zugrundeliegen den Tagung der Vereinigung fUr operative Dermatologie in Hinterzarten zu Wort gekom men. Die Darlegungen der klinischen, der pathologisch-anatomischen, der virologischen und der davon abgeleiteten therapeutischen Gesichtspunkte vermitteln den aktuellen Stand unserer Kenntnisse in diesem wichtigen Teilgebiet der Derrriatologie. Da sich aber der praneoplastische Zu stand ebensowenig wie das manifeste Karzinom auf einen einzigen kausalen Faktor zu rlickfiihren lassen, erschien es sinnvoll - im Rahmen dieses Buches - die fUr eine fundier te Kenntnis der epidermalen Karzinogenese erforderlichen atiopathogenetischen Daten .zu erm: beiten. Erst die Berlicksichtigung des klinischen Befundes in Verbindung mit der Kenntnis und Wertung der verantwortlichen Ursache erlauben dem behandelnden Arzt eine optimale krankheitsspezifische Therapie. Die Autoren zeigen, neben den Moglichkeiten der operativen Therapie, die Indika tionen und Chancen alternativer Behandlungsmoglichkeiten wie Rontgen-, Zytostatika und Kryotherapie auf. Hierbei scheint die nicht immer eindeutige Abgrenzung von Pra kanzerose, Pseudokanzerose und virusbedingter benigner Papillomatose gerade unter dem Blickpunkt der virogenen Onkogenitat besonders wichtig zu sein."

Die Inkas oder ihre Vorganger verfiigten iiber ein beachtenswer- tes astronomisches, kalendarisches und auch mathematisches Wissen. In den Schriften der spanischen Chronisten finden wir hieriiber viele nutzliche Hinweise. Vor allen Dingen aber laBt uns die Ver- messung der alten Tempel oder Heiligtumer in vielen Fallen ihre Zweckbestimmung erkennen. Eine starke und lebendige Ausdrucks- kraft geht weiterhin von der Darstellung astronomischer Begeben- heiten in Stein oder Keramik aus. Die Deutung dieser kiinstleri- schen Darstellungen ermoglicht es dem Astronom, das in ihnen steckende himmelskundliche Gedankengut zu ahnen oder zu ver- stehen. In diesem Buch soll der Versuch unternommen werden, dieses astronomische Wissen und vor allen Dingen auch die Beobachtungs- methoden der Inka und, der noch friiheren Volker des alten Peru ans Licht zu bringen. Wenn mir das gelungen ist, so sehe ich darin den schonsten Lohn fur meine Arbeit.
