Ferrocement is a versatile, construction material, with
applications in low cost housing, rehabilitation, strengthening and
repair of structures, especially in the developing world. The
material can also be used in more advanced constructions for thin
shell structures. This book forms the proceedings of the Fifth
International Symposium on Ferrocement. It presents the latest
developments in research and application of the material and should
serve as a useful reference for all those interested in the
material. This includes both researchers in all parts of the world,
but also those responsible for low cost housing and construction in
developing countries, in South America, Africa and the Far East.
This book should be of interest to researchers concerned with
building materials, government and international agencies involved
with low cost housing, and repair specialists, consultants,
contractors and material suppliers.
The deterioration of cement and concrete as a result of the
alkali-silica reaction ("concrete cancer") is one of the major
problems facing civil, structural and mechanical engineers involved
in the design, construction, repair and maintenance of structures.
It is a global problem, and in this book, case studies from both
developed and developing countries have been selected to provide an
insight into how variables such as climate, geology, construction
materials and methods, and building practice, have a bearing on the
magnitude of the problem and an influence on remedial measures.
This book is a source of reference for civil, structural and
mechanical engineers, designers and researchers.
This volume consists of papers presented at the International
Conference on Recent Developments in Fibre Reinforced Cements and
Concretes, held at the School of Engineering, University of Wales
College of Cardiff, UK, 18-20 September 1989.
This book reviews the fundamental causes and spectrum effects of
ASR. It considers he advances that have been made in our
understanding of this problem throughout the world.
Fibre reinforced cement-based materials are being increasingly used
throughout the world for applications which range from simple
shelter structures through to advanced construction engineering.
This book provides a comprehensive updating of recent research and
development into these materials. Because of concern about the
long-term durability of fibre composites, special emphasis is
placed on aging and durability. Other sections of the text deal
with new fibres and fabrication techniques, engineering properties,
dynamic and structural behaviour, fracture behaviour and modelling.
Applications of fibre reinforced cement and concrete and
ferrocement are covered in separate sections. The book forms the
proceedings of the 4th RILEM International Symposium on the
subject, previous ones being held in London in 1975, and Sheffield
in 1978 and 1986. The book should be useful for all those involved
with research into new construction materials, who need to keep up
with the latest advances in this field.
