The Mathematical Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): M. Ram Murty, V. Kumar Murty The Mathematical Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
M. Ram Murty, V. Kumar Murty
R4,268 Discovery Miles 42 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a mathematician brilliant beyond comparison who inspired many great mathematicians. There is extensive literature available on the work of Ramanujan. But what is missing in the literature is an analysis that would place his mathematics in context and interpret it in terms of modern developments. The 12 lectures by Hardy, delivered in 1936, served this purpose at the time they were given. This book presents Ramanujan's essential mathematical contributions and gives an informal account of some of the major developments that emanated from his work in the 20th and 21st centuries. It contends that his work still has an impact on many different fields of mathematical research. This book examines some of these themes in the landscape of 21st-century mathematics. These essays, based on the lectures given by the authors focus on a subset of Ramanujan's significant papers and show how these papers shaped the course of modern mathematics.

Problems in Algebraic Number Theory (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2005): M. Ram Murty, Jody (Indigo) Esmonde Problems in Algebraic Number Theory (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2005)
M. Ram Murty, Jody (Indigo) Esmonde
R2,654 Discovery Miles 26 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It has become clear that problem solving plays an extremely important role in mathematical research. This book is a collection of about 500 problems in algebraic number theory. They are systematically arranged to reveal the evolution of concepts and ideas of the subject. For this new edition the authors have added a new chapter and revised several sections.

A First Course in Graph Theory and Combinatorics - Second Edition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Sebastian M. Cioaba, M. Ram Murty A First Course in Graph Theory and Combinatorics - Second Edition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Sebastian M. Cioaba, M. Ram Murty
R2,222 Discovery Miles 22 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book discusses the origin of graph theory from its humble beginnings in recreational mathematics to its modern setting or modeling communication networks, as is evidenced by the World Wide Web graph used by many Internet search engines. The second edition of the book includes recent developments in the theory of signed adjacency matrices involving the proof of sensitivity conjecture and the theory of Ramanujan graphs. In addition, the book discusses topics such as Pick's theorem on areas of lattice polygons and Graham-Pollak's work on addressing of graphs. The concept of graph is fundamental in mathematics and engineering, as it conveniently encodes diverse relations and facilitates combinatorial analysis of many theoretical and practical problems. The text is ideal for a one-semester course at the advanced undergraduate level or beginning graduate level.

Non-Vanishing of L-Functions and Applications (Hardcover): M. Ram Murty, V. Kumar Murty Non-Vanishing of L-Functions and Applications (Hardcover)
M. Ram Murty, V. Kumar Murty
R2,684 Discovery Miles 26 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Award-winning monograph of the Ferran Sunyer i Balagure Prize 1996.

This book systematically develops some methods for proving the non-vanishing of certain L-functions at points in the critical strip. Researchers in number theory, graduate students who wish to enter into the area and non-specialists who wish to acquire an introduction to the subject will benefit by a study of this book. One of the most attractive features of the monograph is that it begins at a very basic level and quickly develops enough aspects of the theory to bring the reader to a point the latest discoveries as are presented in the final chapters can be fully appreciated.

Transcendental Numbers (Paperback, 2014 ed.): M. Ram Murty, Purusottam Rath Transcendental Numbers (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
M. Ram Murty, Purusottam Rath
R2,890 Discovery Miles 28 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text provides an introduction to the topic of transcendental numbers for undergraduate and graduate students. Chapters 1 to 18 can be used for an introductory course in transcendental numbers aimed at senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students. Since the Schneider-Lang theorem is the main focus, the reader must have a rudimentary background in complex analysis. Some of the essential features of elliptic curve theory are introduced and made accessible so that the student can savor the beauty of the primary applications. The later chapters include additional, more demanding topics including Baker's theorem and its applications to the transcendence of special values of L-series; applications of Schneider's theorem and Nesterenko's theorem as they apply to special values of modular forms; and the emerging theory of multiple zeta values. This book is ideal for undergraduates and graduate students, as well as non-expert researchers wishing to learn more about transcendental numbers. The text includes many helpful exercises intended to facilitate practical mastery.

Princeton M. Ram Murty August, 1996 V. Kumar Murty xi Introduction Since the time of Dirichlet and Riemann, the analytic properties of L-functions have been used to establish theorems of a purely arithmetic nature. The dist- bution of prime numbers in arithmetic progressions is intimately connected with non-vanishing properties of various L-functions. With the subsequent advent of the Tauberian theory as developed by Wiener and Ikehara, these arithmetical t- orems have been shown to be equivalent to the non-vanishing of these L-functions on the line Re(s)=1. In the 1950's, a new theme was introduced by Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. Given an elliptic curve E over a number ?eld K of ?nite degree over Q, they associated an L-function to E and conjectured that this L-function extends to an entire function and has a zero at s = 1 of order equal to the Z-rank of the group of K-rational points of E. In particular, the L-function vanishes at s=1ifand only if E has in?nitely many K-rational points.

An Introduction to Sieve Methods and Their Applications (Hardcover): Alina Carmen Cojocaru, M. Ram Murty An Introduction to Sieve Methods and Their Applications (Hardcover)
Alina Carmen Cojocaru, M. Ram Murty
R3,722 Discovery Miles 37 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sieve theory has a rich and romantic history. The ancient question of whether there exist infinitely many twin primes (primes p such that p+2 is also prime), and Goldbach's conjecture that every even number can be written as the sum of two prime numbers, have been two of the problems that have inspired the development of the theory. This book provides a motivated introduction to sieve theory. Rather than focus on technical details which can obscure the beauty of the theory, the authors focus on examples and applications, developing the theory in parallel. The text can be used for a senior level undergraduate course or an introductory graduate course in analytic number theory, and non-experts can gain a quick introduction to the techniques of the subject.

Indian Philosophy - An Introduction (Paperback): M. Ram Murty Indian Philosophy - An Introduction (Paperback)
M. Ram Murty
R1,045 Discovery Miles 10 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book introduces the vast topic of Indian philosophy. Beginning with a study of the major Upanishads, it surveys the philosophical ideas contained in the Bhagavadgita. After a short excursion into Buddhism, it summarises the salient ideas of the six systems of Indian philosophy: Nyaya, Vaisesika, Samkhya, Yoga, Purva Mimamsa, and Vedanta. It concludes with an introduction to contemporary Indian thought.
