A Critical Study of Thailand's Higher Education Reforms - The culture of borrowing (Paperback): Rattana Lao A Critical Study of Thailand's Higher Education Reforms - The culture of borrowing (Paperback)
Rattana Lao
R1,585 Discovery Miles 15 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book offers a critical examination of contemporary higher education reforms in Thailand situated in the broader historical, socio-economic and political changes. Through a qualitative case study with three methods of inquiry, this book explores why different 'global education policies' such quasi-privatisation, internationalization, as quality assessment (QA) have resonated in Thailand higher education sector. Grounded in policy borrowing and lending, this book uses the politics, economics and culture of borrowing to analyse major reforms in Thailand for the past one hundred years. It is argued that historical legacy, policy contexts and belief systems of policy elites play pivotal roles in facilitating policy changes or the lack thereof. While historical analysis elucidates that the Thai state has always been an active borrower of western ideas, the perseverance of the 'Thai-ness' discourse has often been used to suggest its so-called independence and idiosyncrasy. This in-depth analysis of the Thai case aims to contribute to the critical studies in Asian education, comparative higher education, policy borrowing and lending and Thai studies. The Culture of Borrowing intensively studies the policy appropriation in the Thai education system by analysing: * Selective Borrowing and the Historical Development of Thai Higher Education * The Asian Economic Crisis as Window of Opportunity: Autonomous University * Internationalization of Teaching: Quantitative and Qualitative Challenges * The Emergence of Quality Policies and their Rationales * The Intended and Unintended Consequences of Quality Policies This book will appeal to researchers in Education, particularly to scholars studying educational policies within the context of tertiary education. It will also interest scholars specialising in Asian and South-east Asian Studies.

Yoga for Happy Mums focuses on the real issues that mums of young children face: lack of sleep, low energy levels, stress, negative emotions (anxiety, guilt, depression, anger and irritability), fluctuating hormones, a weakened immune system, issues with body confidence and difficulties with addictions and relationships. Each chapter includes a discussion about how the particular issue applies to mums, a questionnaire so you can identify which are particularly relevant to you, some suggested points for reflection, guidance from the Kundalini Yoga tradition (including Top Tips such as dietary suggestions), a breathing practice, a physical Yoga set and a meditation. The book is fully illustrated, with easy-to-understand instructions so that you can practise at home. You do not need any previous experience, or to be particularly flexible or physically fit in order to practise these sets. Kundalini Yoga is a comprehensive form of Yoga that uses the breath, sound (mantra), postures and meditation. It is an ancient tradition which can empower you to meet the challenges of modern life with grace and equanimity. Unlike other forms of Yoga which were originally practiced in isolation, Kundalini Yoga has always been a householder's yoga, designed for people with the commitments of family and work.

Rattana Pok
R526 Discovery Miles 5 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Slaves Became Masters, Rattana Pok's memoir of living through the genocidal regime of Pol Pot in Cambodia, one of the most tragic events of the 20th century. Pol Pot took Cambodia back to an agrarian society in just a four year period. Approximately two million Cambodians, nearly one third of the total national population, died in the process through starvation, over-work, and murder. Mr. Pok barely survived these childhood experiences. Mr. Pok was born in Kampot province in September, 1964. Before immigrating to the United States in 1981 he lived several other provinces, including Kampot, Takeo, Kandal, and Battambang. He graduated from high school in Denver, Colorado. In 1985 he moved to Stockton, California, where he attended San Joaquin Delta College and graduated with an Associate in Arts degree. Since March, 1993 he has been a registered court interpreter throughout northern California. He has also been a contract interpreter for the U.S. State Department since 1996 interpreting for numerous Khmer delegates and dignitaries on tours, conferences, and training sessions throughout the United States. In When Slaves Became Masters, Mr. Pok has created a gripping and tragic narrative of what Cambodia was like during the terrible times of the regime of Khmer Rouge from the perspective of a victim. It was the most brutal and savage regime that the world had ever experienced where there was no compromise between the rulers and the people, and the consequence of even a minor offense could result in death. After a history of more than two thousand years of the Khmer nation, the Pol Pot regime stripped out the customs and beliefs, arts, way of life and even language to suit the revolutionary idea of an agrarian society where education, modern technology, entertainment and family bond were no longer regarded as important. Everyone was on the brink of death; therefore, conformity and decency were no longer necessary in order to fulfill the instinctual drive for survival.
