This book examines the extreme right in France during the interwar
period. It begins by describing the background of the French right
before 1914 and then provides commentary and analysis of the broad
range of the extra-parliamentary right in interwar France.
Organisations such as Action Francaise and the militant ligues are
examined as well as prominent extreme-right intellectuals such as
Lucien Rebatet, Robert Brasillach and Pierre Drieu la Rochelle. The
various forms of French anti-Semitism are assessed, and the book
also situates the French extreme right within a broader context by
assessing its impact on other European countries, including the UK.
It concludes by exploring the complicated politics of wartime
France where some extreme-right activists collaborated with the
Nazis while others opposed them, and where few generalisations
prove possible. This volume will be of great interest to scholars
and students of French history, the extreme right and interwar
politics.

This book is a sequel to Richard Griffiths's two highly successful
previous books on the British pro-Nazi Right, Fellow Travellers of
the Right: British Enthusiasts for Nazi Germany 1933-39 and
Patriotism Perverted: Captain Ramsay, the Right Club and British
Anti-Semitism 1939-1940. It follows the fortunes of his
protagonists after the arrests of May-June 1940, and charts their
very varied reactions to the failure of their cause, while also
looking at the possible reasons for the Government's failure to
detain prominent pro-Nazis from the higher strata of society. Some
of the pro-Nazis continued with their original views, and even
undertook politically subversive activity, here and in Germany.
Others, finding that their pre-war balance between patriotism and
pro-Nazism had now tipped firmly on the side of patriotism, fully
supported the war effort, while still maintaining their old views
privately. Other people found that events had made them change
their views sincerely. And then there were those who, frightened by
the prospect of detention or disgrace, tried to hide or even to
deny their former views by a variety of subterfuges, including
attacking former colleagues. This wide variety of reactions sheds
new light on the equally wide range of reasons for their original
admiration for Nazism, and also gives us some more general insight
into what could be termed 'the psychology of failure'.

This collection of nine essays, with an introduction by Richard
Griffiths, examines some of the broad themes relating to the way in
which the reading, translation and interpretation of the Bible in
the Renaissance could serve the specific and often practical aims
of those involved. Moving from humanist issues concerned with the
nature of the sacred texts and methods for interpreting them, the
volume examines the uses of the Bible in different contexts, and
looks at the social, political and religious impact of its
translations in the sixteenth century.
This book aims to examine the techniques used by the polemicists of
the Dreyfus Affair, as found in the newspapers, journals and books
of the period. The nature of polemic and of the French press of the
period are investigated to show how authors' choice of stylistic
techniques show their aims.
There is relatively little information on The Netherlands written
in the English language which is easily accessible to social
science students and even less which is systematically assembled
between the covers of a single book. This is unfortunate not only
because The Netherlands is an important part of Western Europe but
because the experience of The Netherlands in the way in which it
has attempted to resolve the economic and political problems
confronting it may help to shed valuable light on similar issues
facing other European countries. The contributions for this volume
were chosen with these considerations in mind. On the one hand the
selection of topics was intended to provide an overall impression
of the political and economic development of The Netherlands since
the Second World War. Thus separate chapters are devoted to an
examination of economic develop ment; counter-inflation, energy,
regional and planning policies; pressure groups, electoral
performance, cabinet formation and colonial and Euro pean policies.
On the other hand, these areas for investigation were chosen to
invite specific contrast with the experience of other European
nations or to illustrate certain problems of political or economic
theory. It is my pleasure to thank, first of all, the contributors
themselves for the conscientious way in which they prepared their
drafts which made my task as editor so much easier. Secondly, it
will be apparent to even the most casual observer that I have
contributed two chapters."
Much modern (Le. post-17S0) economic history is concerned with
success in that a vast body of literature focuses its attention
upon the experience of industrialisation and economic growth or
upon relative differences in performance once the growth process is
underway. The explanations advanced frequently hinge on those
supply and demand factors, perceptible during the growth period
itself, which may have helped or hindered economic progress. The
problem which arises with this approach is whether those forces
attributed with having pulled a country forward were the same as
those which, in their absence, had held it back. For example, the
growth of'inter national demand may be seen as a major stimulus in
the economic development of a particular country, but its
effectiveness as a stimu lant may have been contingent upon the
prior removal of quite diffe rent obstacles to growth. In these
circumstances it would be quite wrong to attribute lack of earlier
development to the absence of international demand. Thus the study
of a period preceeding discer nible growth in a sector of the
economy may tell historians as much about the reasons for
subsequent growth as a study of the growth period itself. This was
my initial reason for choosing to research into the industrial
development in the Netherlands in the first half of the nineteenth
century: that it was an interval in economic history usually
interpreted as one of stagnation, of missed opportunities and even
of economic decline."
With the transition into the Knowledge Economy, a formidable series
of new challenges arise within the corporate governance space. This
book tackles the issue of corporate governance along two axes.
Firstly, it confronts the developments in corporate governance
within the context of the Knowledge Economy and all its
implications in relation to the pre-eminence of intangible assets,
the advent of technologies such as smartphones and advanced forms
of artificial intelligence, and cultural changes associated with
the incorporation of Gen Y into the workforce and the proliferation
of social networks and effects such as Big Data and cyber-threats.
Secondly, it highlights the challenges for multinational
organizations and the tension that exists between headquarters and
subsidiary offices due to the need to combine the corporation's
ethical culture and corporate governance values with the
institutional forces of the subsidiaries' context. The combination
of these two axes addressed viz a viz the relationship between
senior management and the rank and file of the organization to
create an ethical corporate culture leads to a completely different
positioning of corporate governance and make the book truly unique
and of interest to researchers, students of corporate finance and
corporate governance alongside practitioners within financial
organizations and more broadly.
