Convergence proposes the enhancement of the Internet with a novel,
content-centric, publish-subscribe service model based on the
versatile digital item (VDI): a common container for all kinds of
digital content, including digital representations of real-world
resources. VDIs will serve the needs of the future Internet,
providing a homogeneous method for handling structured information,
incorporating security and privacy mechanisms. CONVERGENCE subsumes
the following areas of research: * definition of the VDI as a new
fundamental unit of distribution and transaction; * content-centric
networking functionality to complement or replace IP-address-based
routing; * security and privacy protection mechanisms; *
open-source middleware, including a community dictionary service to
enable rich semantic searches; * applications, tested under
real-life conditions. This book shows how CONVERGENCE allows
publishing, searching and subscribing to any content. Creators can
publish their content by wrapping it and its descriptions into a
VDI, setting rights for other users to access this content, monitor
its use, and communicate with people using it; they may even update
or revoke content previously published. Access to content is more
efficient, as search engines exploit VDI metadata for indexing, and
the network uses the content name to ensure users always access the
copy closest to them. Every node in the network is a content cache;
handover is easy; multicast is natural; peer-to-peer is built-in;
time/space-decoupling is possible. Application developers can
exploit CONVERGENCE's middleware and network without having to
resort to proprietary/ad hoc solutions for common/supporting
functionality. Operators can use the network more efficiently,
better controlling information transfer and related revenues flows.
Network design, operation and management are simplified by
integrating diverse functions and avoiding patches and stopgap
solutions. Whether as a text for graduate students working on the
future of the Internet, or a resource for practitioners providing
e-commerce or multimedia services, or scientists defining new
technologies, CONVERGENCE will make a valuable contribution to the
future shape of the Internet.
The Ashmolean collection of miniatures was begun in the 17th
century by the Tradescants, father and son, gardeners to Charles I
and Henrietta Maria. Among its most generous benefactors was the
Reverend Bentinck Hawkins, chaplain to the Dukes of Cambridge and
an insatiable 19th-century collector. The miniatures, mostly of
very high quality, range from the Tudor and Stuart era to Victorian
times, and include specially distinguished works by Isaac Oliver,
Cooper, Zincke, Smart, Cosway and Engleheart.
It's 1839 and you are a medical student working on your first human
body dissection! Under the watchful eye of Dr Walker, peel the
flaps back to reveal the inner workings of the human body, from
bone and muscle, to the brain, eyes, heart, lungs and everything
in-between. Victorian-inspired illustrations meet with medical
notes and sketches to give a complete in-depth exploration of how
the human body works. Word count including flaps: approx 5,000
In response to changes in internal needs, external organizational
environments, and the expectations of shareholders - most notably,
citizens and politicians - innovation is now an important
common-place aspect of governance and the running of public service
organizations. Given the ongoing financial and economic crisis,
which presents a significant challenge to public service
organizations (PSOs), there is a growing need to establish
innovative strategies in order to survive the crisis, and provide
the basis for future sustainable growth. This book contributes
towards the discussion of PSO innovation through theoretically
informed empirical studies of innovation across a range of
theories, topics and fields. Studies examine the role of citizens,
managers, and public service organizations; the adoption,
diffusion, implementation, and management of innovations;
collaboration, communication, and information technologies; and
decision-making, ethical principles, HR management, leadership, and
procurement. The studies - which examine the situation in a range
of countries in Europe and Asia - cover a range of different
organizations such as non-profits, health service organizations,
and local governments. This book was originally published as a
special issue of Public Management Review.
Rapidly growing cognitive technologies (such as word processors,
web browsers, cell phones, and personal data assistants) aid
learning, memory, and problem solving, and contribute to every part
of modern life from interviewing crime witnesses to learning a
foreign language to calling one's mother. This collection of essays
on cognitive technology examines the interaction between the human
mind and the tools people create to enhance it, studying which
technologies assist cognition the most and what features are most
effective. It also considers the point at which the technological
enhancement of human ability begins to restrict that very ability,
such as the risk of some cognitive technologies impairing cognition
or creating disadvantages for individuals or groups. This
collection of 11 essays discusses the most recent psychological
research in cognitive technology, showcasing the paradigms and
theories that have driven the development of new cognitive
technologies. It explores the impact of technology on cognitive
psychology, the classroom, and social interaction and group problem
solving. Topics covered include the distracting characteristics of
new technologies (such as the effects of cell phone use on driving
ability and of distracting advertisements on problem solving), the
study of mass media through assessing memories for media
experiences, the media's role in advancing gender and racial
prejudices, and the misuse of cognitive technology through identity
theft and cyberterrorism. Each essay concludes with a bibliography.

An all-in-one illustrated guide to human anatomy with encyclopedic coverage from bones and muscles to systems and processes. This in-depth manual to the human body's physical structure, chemical workings, and potential problems is a must-have reference to help further your studies or knowledge of how our bodies work.
Each page of The Human Body Book, updated to reflect the latest medical advances, is illustrated with colourful and comprehensive diagrams, which are thoroughly annotated to take you right into the cells and fibres that are responsible for keeping the human body ticking.
The opening chapter, Integrated Body, explains how the parts of the body work together at various levels of size and hierarchy to produce the living whole. It also contains an overview of the major body systems, enlivened by real-life 3D medical scans of the entire body. The chapters that follow provide coverage of the body function by function, system by system. Eleven main body systems are covered in turn, with each section ending on common injuries, diseases, and disorders afflicting that system. The book concludes with a chapter on Growth and Development which looks in detail at how the body changes over the course of a human lifespan.
This accessible guide presents the astrophysical concepts behind
astronomical spectroscopy, covering both the theory and the
practical elements of recording, processing, analysing and
interpreting your spectra. It covers astronomical objects, such as
stars, planets, nebulae, novae, supernovae, and events such as
eclipses and comet passages. Suitable for anyone with only a little
background knowledge and access to amateur-level equipment, the
guide's many illustrations, sketches and figures will help you
understand and practise this scientifically important and growing
field of amateur astronomy, up to the level of Pro-Am
collaborations. Accessible to non-academics, it benefits many
groups from novices and learners in astronomy clubs, to advanced
students and teachers of astrophysics. This volume is the perfect
companion to the Spectral Atlas for Amateur Astronomers, which
provides detailed commented spectral profiles of more than 100
astronomical objects.

Featuring detailed commented spectral profiles of more than one
hundred astronomical objects, in colour, this spectral guide
documents most of the important and spectroscopically observable
objects accessible using typical amateur equipment. It allows you
to read and interpret the recorded spectra of the main stellar
classes, as well as most of the steps from protostars through to
the final stages of stellar evolution as planetary nebulae, white
dwarfs or the different types of supernovae. It also presents
integrated spectra of stellar clusters, galaxies and quasars, and
the reference spectra of some terrestrial light sources, for
calibration purposes. Whether used as the principal reference for
comparing with your recorded spectra or for inspiring independent
observing projects, this atlas provides a breathtaking view into
our Universe's past. The atlas is accompanied and supplemented by
Spectroscopy for Amateur Astronomers, which explains in detail the
methods for recording, processing, analysing and interpreting your
spectra.
Hannah Snell was an 18th-century woman who disguised herself as a
man and became a soldier. This extremely popular biography centers
around a recurrent 18th century trope of cross-dressing that
subversively challenged social expectations and gender norms.
