Cyberbullying in Schools, Workplaces, and Romantic Relationships - The Many Lenses and Perspectives of Electronic Mistreatment... Cyberbullying in Schools, Workplaces, and Romantic Relationships - The Many Lenses and Perspectives of Electronic Mistreatment (Paperback)
Gary W. Giumetti, Robin M. Kowalski
R1,324 Discovery Miles 13 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume brings together research on cyberbullying across contexts, age groups, and cultures to gain a fuller perspective of the prevalence and impact of electronic mistreatment on individual, group, and organizational outcomes. This is the first book to integrate research on cyberbullying across three contexts: schools, workplaces, and romantic relationships, providing a unique synthesis of lifespan contexts. For each context, the expert chapter authors bring together three different 'lenses': existing research on the predictors and outcomes of cyberbullying within that context; a cross-cultural review across national borders and cultural boundaries; and a developmental perspective that examines age-related differences in cyberbullying within that context. The book closes by drawing commonalities across these different contexts leading to a richer understanding of cyberbullying as a whole and some possible avenues for future research and practice. This is fascinating reading for researchers and upper-level students in social psychology, counseling, school psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, and developmental psychology, as well as educators and administrators.

Aversive Interpersonal Behaviors (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Robin M. Kowalski Aversive Interpersonal Behaviors (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Robin M. Kowalski
R4,318 Discovery Miles 43 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Aversive behaviors have greater influence on social interactions than is generally acknowledged, determining personal satisfaction, interpersonal attraction, choice of partners, and the course of relationships. What motivates aversive behaviors? To what extent do they obtain desired outcomes? In what ways are they unnecessary and destructive? How do other people respond, emotionally and behaviorally? These are just a few of the many interesting questions addressed by the 16 respected researchers who contribute to Aversive Interpersonal Behaviors. Nine chapters give this heretofore neglected subject the attention it is due, probing a dark side of interpersonal relationships to understand both its destructive and adaptive nature.

Since the earliest days of the discipline, psychologists with a variety of theoretical orientations have recognized that interpersonal factors play a role in the origin and maintenance of emotional and behavioral problems as well as in the diagnostic and therapeutic activities through which mental health professionals treat psychological difficulties. Yet, despite recognition that interpersonal processes are relevant to understanding and treating psychological problems, attempts to forge explicit connections between social psychology and clinical psychology evoked little interest among members of either camp for many years. However, over the past two decades, an interface between social and clinical psychology has emerged.

Most of these integrations of social and clinical psychology can be found in journal articles that are interspersed throughout the fields. However, because of the diverse locations for dissemination of information at the interface of social and clinical psychology and because few people have access to all of the journals that would provide them with an integrated perspective on the interface, some means of bringing together key articles within the fields of social, clinical and counseling psychology is needed. This collection of readings at the interface of social and clinical psychology is intended for this purpose.

The volume is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate courses in social psychology, personality, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and abnormal psychology, and can be used as a primary text for courses and seminars in social psychology and the social-clinical interface.

Complaining, Teasing, and Other Annoying Behaviors (Paperback): Robin M. Kowalski Complaining, Teasing, and Other Annoying Behaviors (Paperback)
Robin M. Kowalski
R652 Discovery Miles 6 520 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Everyone has teased, nagged, betrayed, or lied to another person. Likewise, everyone has been the unfortunate object of such unpleasant behaviors. In this intriguing book, social psychologist Robin M. Kowalski examines the intricacies of six annoying interpersonal behaviors: complaining, teasing, breaches of propriety, worry and reassurance-seeking, lying, and betrayal. She considers the functions of these behaviors, the types of people who are inclined to do them, the consequences for victims and perpetrators, and the ways in which such behaviors might be curtailed. Complaining, Teasing, and Other Annoying Behaviors provides for the first time a multifaceted picture of common annoying behaviors. The book answers these questions and many others: Why do people tease? What are the consequences of annoying behaviors for the people involved? Is there a positive side to irritating behaviors? Are people more likely to lie to those close to them or to strangers? Do excuses and apologies diminish the hurtful effect of unpleasant behaviors? What is the relation of gender and culture to specific annoying acts?
