In John 1:48, Nathanael says to Jesus, "How do you know me?" Jesus replies, with a twinkle in his eye, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree." Lent is a time to slow down and journey with Jesus through his life, death, and resurrection. Under the Fig Tree is a book of 46 drawings, photographs, and paintings inspired by Lenten themes, readings, and stories for each day of Lent and Holy Week. The images, like snapshots, are colorful, inspired, and rife with emotion. The reader receives an opportunity to reflect, slow down, and walk with Jesus as a friend and disciple, to sit with Jesus under the fig tree and talk, listen, and glimpse the face and heart of authentic love. * Foreword by Fleming Rutledge * Includes 46 full color images * Lenten devotional journal * Well-known artist and author of The Painting Table * Resource or gift for confirmation, pilgrimages, grief, prayer
Inspired by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s powerful statement and call to the Episcopal Church to be the “Jesus Movement” in this world, artist Roger Hutchison created a painting that measures 30” x 40” and illustrates the full life of Christ. Beginning at the bottom with the infant child in the manger, the eye is drawn upward to the boy Jesus, the adult Jesus, and Jesus on the cross. This book reproduces 16 different areas of the painting, with the final image being the full painting. Each section is matched with a page of Scripture from one of the gospels telling a portion of Jesus’s life (birth, baptism, miracle, teaching, Last Supper, crucifixion, resurrection, etc.), followed by a reflection, the painting piece, and finally a story suggesting where the reader can find Jesus today in a similar encounter between ourselves and another person. Each “chapter” concludes with a reflection question.
* A story of hope, mixing color, food, artwork, and memories * Guided questions and blank pages for reflection in word or art by the reader * Offers a model for small group and individual reflection in times of tragedy (individual, local or national) * Featuring 12 full-color illustrations This is for anyone experiencing significant loss or change; it's an accessible, simple, and beautiful book for those who may be grieving the death of a loved one, struggling in a relationship, or facing a major transition in their lives. Where there is grief, sadness, and loss, there also is hope. There is an opportunity for celebration as we gather together, break bread, talk, and are welcomed. Whether through cooking, or painting, or Eucharist, we come together to remember past experiences and to consider new ones. For many, life happens around the kitchen table, but in this case, we gather at The Painting Table as the reader is invited to draw pictures, record memories, and celebrate living through the creation of something new.
