One of the major activities of academics is reviewing colleagues'
manuscripts, yet no formal training on how to put together a
meaningful review is usually provided by Ph.D. programs or
professional associations. "Winning Reviews" brings together
highly-respected scholars to discuss the fundamental nuts and bolts
of writing a review. Insights are offered by leading journal
editors and the vital role that reviews play in the knowledge
creation process is examined. The book provides a comprehensive and
much-needed guide to evaluating and reviewing scholarly
writing.
This book applies the principles of well-being theory and positive
psychology to sport to establish a basis of servant leadership in
sport organizations. Though the win-at-all-cost mentality is
pervasive in sport, leading to acceptance of leadership styles more
associated with controlling and extrinsic motivators, the author
proposes need satisfaction based on three psychological needs:
autonomy, competence, and belongingness, which leads to enhanced
job performance, job satisfaction, and well-being. Through need
satisfaction, servant leaders positively influence organizational
outcomes by enabling followers' growth and well-being. This book
will make a new contribution to sport management research in
applying the principles of positive psychology to servant
leadership and to sport.
Some embrace the idea of white privilege as an important concept
that helps us to make sense of the connection between race and
social and political disadvantages, while others are critical or
even hostile. Regardless of personal views, it can be difficult to
agree on what 'white privilege' even means. Philosopher Shannon
Sullivan cuts through the confusion and cross-talk to challenge
what 'everybody knows' about white privilege. Using real-life
examples, she offers a candid assessment of the advantages and
disadvantages of the term, to present a better understanding of how
race functions in our societies. She argues that white privilege is
about more than race, that not only white people can have white
privilege, and that feeling guilty about privilege can have a
negative effect on the very people you feel guilty towards. In the
end, she offers practical solutions for eliminating white privilege
and building a fairer society. Sullivan's forcefully argued book
will inspire you to think again about white privilege and what it
entails.
The Politics of Trash explains how municipal trash collection
solved odorous urban problems using nongovernmental and often
unseemly means. Focusing on the persistent problems of filth and
the frustration of generations of reformers unable to clean their
cities, Patricia Strach and Kathleen S. Sullivan tell a story of
dirty politics and administrative innovation that made rapidly
expanding American cities livable. The solutions that professionals
recommended to rid cities of overflowing waste cans, litter-filled
privies, and animal carcasses were largely ignored by city
governments. When the efforts of sanitarians, engineers, and
reformers failed, public officials turned to the habits and tools
of corruption as well as to gender and racial hierarchies.
Corruption often provided the political will for public officials
to establish garbage collection programs. Effective waste
collection involves translating municipal imperatives into new
habits and arrangements in homes and other private spaces. To
change domestic habits, officials relied on gender hierarchy to
make the women of the white, middle-class households in charge of
sanitation. When public and private trash cans overflowed, racial
and ethnic prejudices were harnessed to single out scavengers,
garbage collectors, and neighborhoods by race. These early informal
efforts were slowly incorporated into formal administrative
processes that created the public-private sanitation systems that
prevail in most American cities today. The Politics of Trash
locates these hidden resources of governments to challenge
presumptions about the formal mechanisms of governing and recovers
the presence of residents at the margins, whose experiences can be
as overlooked as garbage collection itself. This consideration of
municipal garbage collection reveals how political development
often relies on undemocratic means with long-term implications for
further inequality. Focusing on the resources that cleaned American
cities also shows the tenuous connection between political
development and modernization. -- Cornell University Press

Iolanthe; or, The Peer and the Peri is Gilbert and Sullivan's
seventh opera, first performed in 1882. The satirical work concerns
the fairy Iolanthe, who has been exiled for her choice to marry a
mortal. Misunderstandings within her family eventually lead to a
dramatic clash between the Fairies and the House of Peers. This
score is for voice and piano.
Rivaled in its success only by The Mikado, Gilbert and Sullivan's
comic opera HMS Pinafore continues to rank among the most popular
works by the famed duo of librettist and songwriter. Popular from
the start, the work contains some of Gilbert's most clever flashes
of wit and a number of Sullivan's most charming melodies. Moreover,
Gilbert's satirical attitude toward matters nautical during
England's Victorian era and Sullivan's parody of "sea music" are
enjoyed and appreciated today as much as they were over 100 years
ago.

The US Army has completed fielding of the Javelin Antitank Weapon
System to Infantry Battalions in the 75th Ranger Regiment and the
82nd Airborne Division. In the year 2000, the fielding team is
issuing the Javelin to the Second Infantry Division in Korea. Thus
far, results from the soldiers and leaders indicate that the fire
and forget Javelin is largely accepted as a dramatic improvement
over its wire-guided predecessor the Dragon. During numerous
fielding tests, live fire tests, and force on force tests at the
National Training Center, technological and tactical experts have
closely monitored the performance of the Javelin. The capabilities
and potential impact of this new weapon system obligates the U.S.
Army to examine how it intends to integrate the Javelin system into
all warfighting domains. This monograph answers the question
whether the introduction of the Javelin into the U.S. Army's Light
Infantry Battalions marks the beginning of a revolution in ground
antiarmor warfare. This monograph begins with a comparison of the
Javelin to the Dragon to demonstrate the significant increase in
capabilities. The monograph establishes clear criteria for
distinguishing a military revolution from an evolution and
establishes the Javelin's link to the U.S. military's present
Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA). The Infantry Revolution of
the 1300s is examined as an example of a military revolution and
antitank guided missile (ATGM) use during the Arab-Israeli War of
1973 is examined as an example of a military evolution. The
monograph studies U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps relevant
doctrinal manuals and text to determine if the introduction of the
Javelin has caused any changes in the antiarmor tactics. The review
will assess the progress and quality of incorporating Javelin
tactics into doctrinal publications and demonstrate that much
progress is still needed in developing new tactics for employing
Javelin equipped units in both offensive and defensive scenarios.

This book was written because if I can save just one baby from
having to go through or having the experience that I had as a
child; it will be worth it. My goal is to get the child bearing
female to stop and think and be honest with themselves. To think
about what color really mean to them and their family. Will the
child or children be able to receive the love they deserve? That
the female choose a male that she wants her babies to look just
like him. We all know that all babies are beautiful and ready to
learn, receive love, and give love. I am sharing what I went
through as a child some good experiences and some not so good. Over
all I was blessed in many ways, I just did not have a normal
childhood; I had to grow up to fast. And there were times when
there was just myself and God and no one else on earth that cared.
But as you see God was all that I needed.
