The Jamaat Question in Bangladesh - Islam, Politics and Society in a Post-Democratic Nation: Syed Serajul Islam, MD Saidul Islam The Jamaat Question in Bangladesh - Islam, Politics and Society in a Post-Democratic Nation
Syed Serajul Islam, MD Saidul Islam
R4,470 Discovery Miles 44 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Jamaat Question in Bangladesh addresses the complex intersection of global politics and local dynamics in Bangladesh, particularly in relation to Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Jamaat). With multidisciplinary insights and perspectives, the contributors to this volume provide an objective socio-historical analysis of Islam, politics and society in Bangladesh. Separating fact from fiction, they attempt to uncover the truth about Jamaat, the largest Islam-based political party in the country. Suppressed and marginalized by the BAL regime, Jamaat remains active in the social landscape of Bangladesh. What makes Jamaat so resilient against all odds? Can it peacefully coexist with rival political parties in a polarised nation such as Bangladesh? This book seeks to answer these crucial questions. An essential read for those interested in Bangladeshi politics and political Islam.

MD Saidul Islam, Edson Kieu
R3,614 Discovery Miles 36 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With a robust multi-site study in Southeast Asia, Pacific Island Forum and South Asia, this book examines the regional initiatives on, the current state of, and the future prospects for mitigations and resilience regarding climate change and food security vis-a-vis other regions of the world.

Development, Power, and the Environment - Neoliberal Paradox in the Age of Vulnerability (Hardcover, New): MD Saidul Islam Development, Power, and the Environment - Neoliberal Paradox in the Age of Vulnerability (Hardcover, New)
MD Saidul Islam
R4,637 Discovery Miles 46 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Unmasking the neoliberal paradox, this book provides a robust conceptual and theoretical synthesis of development, power and the environment. With seven case studies on global challenges such as under-development, food regime, climate change, dam building, identity politics, and security vulnerability, the book offers a new framework of a "double-risk" society for the Global South. With apparent ecological and social limits to neoliberal globalization and development, the current levels of consumption are unsustainable, inequitable, and inaccessible to the majority of humans. Power has a great role to play in this global trajectory. Though power is one of most pervasive phenomena of human society, it is probably one of the least understood concepts. The growth of transnational corporations, the dominance of world-wide financial and political institutions, and the extensive influence of media that are nearly monopolized by corporate interests are key factors shaping our global society today. In the growing concentration of power in few hands, what is apparent is a non-apparent nature of power. Understanding the interplay of power in the discourse of development is a crucial matter at a time when our planet is in peril - both environmentally and socially. This book addresses this current crucial need.

Confronting the Blue Revolution - Industrial Aquaculture and Sustainability in the Global South (Paperback, New): Saidul Islam Confronting the Blue Revolution - Industrial Aquaculture and Sustainability in the Global South (Paperback, New)
Saidul Islam
R791 Discovery Miles 7 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like the Green Revolution of the 1960s, a "Blue Revolution" has taken place in global aquaculture. Geared towards quenching the appetite of privileged consumers in the global North, it has come at a high price for the South: ecological devastation, displacement of rural subsistence farmers, and labour exploitation. The uncomfortable truth is that food security for affluent consumers depends on a foundation of social and ecological devastation in the producing countries. In Confronting the Blue Revolution, Md Saidul Islam uses the shrimp farming industry in Bangladesh and across the global South to show the social and environmental impact of industrialized aquaculture. The book pushes us to reconsider our attitudes to consumption patterns in the developed world, neoliberal environmental governance, and the question of sustainability.

Islam and Democracy in South Asia - The Case of Bangladesh (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): MD Nazrul Islam, MD Saidul Islam Islam and Democracy in South Asia - The Case of Bangladesh (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
MD Nazrul Islam, MD Saidul Islam
R1,523 Discovery Miles 15 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Grounded in the Weberian tradition, Islam and Democracy in South Asia: The Case of Bangladesh presents a critical analysis of the complex relationship between Islam and democracy in South Asia and Bangladesh. The book posits that Islam and democracy are not necessarily incompatible, but that the former has a contributory role in the development of the latter. Islam came to Bengal largely by Sufis and missionaries through peaceful means and hence a moderate form of this religion got rooted in the society. Both militant Islam and militant secularism are equal threats to democracy and pluralism. Like democracy, political Islam has many faces. Political Islam adhering to democratic norms and practices, what the authors call "democratic Islamism," unlike "militant Islamism," is not anti-democratic. The book shows that the suppression of democracy and human rights creates avenues for the consolidation of militant Islamism, orthodox Islam, and "Islamic" terrorism, while the "fair play" of democracy results in the decline of anti-democratic form of political Islam.
