First Published in 2002. It is easy to see that we are living in a time of rapid and radical social change. It is much less easy to grasp the fact that such change will inevitably affect the nature of those disciplines that both reflect our society and help to shape it. Yet this is nowhere more apparent than in the central field of what may, in general terms, be called literary studies. 'New Accents' is intended as a positive response to the initiative offered by such a situation. Each volume in the series will seek to encourage rather than resist the process of change. To stretch rather than reinforce the boundaries that currently define literature and its academic study.

Definitions of humanism have evolved throughout the centuries as the term has been adopted for a variety of purposes - literary, cultural and political - and reactions against humanism have contributed to movements such as postmodernism and anti-humanism. Tony Davies offers a clear introduction to the many uses of this influential yet complex concept and this second edition extends his discussion to include:

Talented and ambitious people will only stay with their current employer if they are offered positive development, motivation and nurturing to ensure they are given every chance of realizing their potential. Simple financial packages, although superficially attractive, often assuage a short term need but rarely cater for the long-term requirements of a talented person. Talent Assessment demonstrates how to manage the needs of the individual employees and those of the organization in parallel; how to identify the aspirational and development needs of potential top performers and how to manage them sensibly. This involves using techniques to assess their mindsets, behaviours and skills and then providing effective training, development and performance management interventions. IT is an increasingly important support and enabler of this kind of process and the authors provide guidance on the process and content required for a talent management database. There is also a chapter exploring the critical operation role of HR in talent management. The book is filled with practical examples and mini-case studies to help you apply the various techniques. It provides positive, practical guidelines to encourage you to implement a suitable talent management programme as well as introducing more advanced aspects of the subject, particularly in terms of assessing suitable candidates for this way of managing your organization's future.

When a SQL Server database is operating smoothly and performing well, there is no need to be particularly aware of the transaction log, beyond ensuring that every database has an appropriate backup regime and restore plan in place. When things go wrong, however, a DBA's reputation depends on a deeper understanding of the transaction log, both what it does, and how it works. An effective response to a crisis requires rapid decisions based on understanding its role in ensuring data integrity.
A series of short stories for young children, written by father and grandfather Tony Davies, after years of bedtime story-telling. Easy reading and light hearted traditional stories.
What makes you passionate about working with SQL Server? What lessons have you learned, perhaps the hard way, on how to get the best performance and scalability out of your SQL Server databases? We challenged a group of talented, up-and-coming 'new voices' in SQL Server to share their passion and knowledge with the Community. A DBA's core responsibilities are constant. A DBA must maintain and enforce security mechanisms on the data, prepare effectively for disaster recovery, ensure the performance and availability of all the databases in their care. As such, we have chapters providing tips on how to get the most out of features such as data compression, backup verification, performance tuning with traces and extended events, auditing, SSIS, and more. Side by side with these, we have chapters on the importance to a DBA of communicating clearly with their co-workers and business leaders, presenting data as useful information that the business can use to make decisions, adopting a more Agile approach to their work, and sound project management skills. The resulting book, Tribal SQL, is a reflection of how a DBA's core and long-standing responsibilities sit alongside new thinking and fresh ideas about where the DBA role is going, and what it means to be a DBA in today's businesses.
This paper aims to assist the RNZAF in realizing that some long-term strategic decisions are required about the future of its C-130 training. At present, there exists a disturbing trend showing pilot experience, aircraft continuation training, and simulator refresher training to be decreasing insidiously. Most of this is due to budgetary constraints, which have reduced resources to a bare minimum. The current simulator-training scheme is too expensive to yield the required minimum frequency for refresher training and new ways must be identified to enable more training for less cost. This paper reviews the rational for using flight simulators and then compares the RNZAF with other air forces to assess whether its C-130 pilots are fulfilling the minimum level of simulator training recommended by those countries.
Are you looking for permanent happiness? Are you suffering right now and don't know how to end it forever? Do you have problems and you don't know how to solve them? If you answered YES to any of the above questions then "just add my book" to your life and start living the life you always dreamed about Tony Davis
