Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

With an ever-increasing elderly population and the resultant rising
levels of dementia-related disorders, preclinical research based on
animal models is pivotal to our knowledge of underlying molecular
mechanisms and drug discovery aiming at the development of
therapeutic strategies alleviating or preventing the neurological
devastation. In Animal Models of Dementia, expert researchers
provide contributions that stress the importance of extensively
validated animal models in drug discovery and development in order
to predict clinical activity. Beginning with general aspects of
animal modeling, related ethical issues, and essential
methodological considerations, the highly detailed volume then
continues with various levels of model validation, including
pathological, behavioral, neurochemical, pharmacological, and
imaging aspects, followed by sections focused on specific
disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease,
metachromatic leukodystrophy and adrenoleukodystrophy, amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia as well as vascular
dementia and more. As a volume in the renowned Neuromethods series,
this book offers a detailed, yet accessible, overview of currently
available animal models in the field of dementia research, and
touches, as well, upon more general areas linked to the development
and use of animal models. Comprehensive and efficient, Animal
Models of Dementia will significantly aid both experienced animal
researchers as well as investigators on the verge of beginning
animal model-based dementia research.

Constantine's victory in 312 at the battle of the Milvian Bridge
established his rule as the first Christian emperor. This book
examines the creation and dissemination of the legends about that
battle and its significance. Christian histories, panegyrics, and
an honorific arch at Rome soon commemorated his victory, and the
emperor himself contributed to the myth by describing his vision of
a cross in the sky before the battle. Through meticulous research
into the late Roman narratives and the medieval and Byzantine
legends, this book moves beyond a strictly religious perspective by
emphasizing the conflicts about the periphery of the Roman empire,
the nature of emperorship, and the role of Rome as a capital city.
Throughout late antiquity and the medieval period, memories of
Constantine's victory served as a powerful paradigm for
understanding rulership in a Christian society.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of current developments
in the field of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). Divided
into three parts, the book first presents reflections on the
concept of RI from various angles: how did it come about, who is
involved and how might in be applied in various contexts, such as
the academic environment or in developing countries. The second
part discusses the actual application of RRI to technology
development: for climate engineering, water management and energy
technology along with a general discussion on how to integrate RRI
in innovation trajectories. The last part offers a closer look at
the application of RRI to the business context. This part offers
lessons from comparable concepts such as social and sustainability
innovation as well as insights from two case-studies, one in the
food sector and the other in data management. As a whole, the book
contributes to the ongoing development of the framework of RRI by
giving an overview of the state-of-the art research, presenting the
lessons learned from several case studies, and showing the way for
future application of RI in other fields and cultural contexts,
such as industry and developing countries.
This book presents a collection of essays and remembrances of the
late Soviet physicist Gersh Itskovich Budker. The book was
originally published in Russia in 1988 as a memorial on the
occasion of Budker's 70th birthday and translated/edited by the
editors. Budker was the founder and first director of the Institute
of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk, a division of the Soviet
Siberian Academy. He is primarily known for his work in high energy
physics, controlled fusion and accelerator and beam physics. Two
articles are included by Budker himself, and other contributors
include Kapitsza, Landau, Sakharov and other eminent Soviet and
American physicists. The book is illustrated with photographs, and
should be of interest to high energy physicists, plasma physicists
and historians of physics.
In August, 1976 the research seminar 'Decision-making in business'
was organized at Nijenrode, The Netherlands School of Business.
More than fifty scientists and practitioners from nine countries
presented research papers in one of the six discussion groups. Some
of them also presented some of their ideas in front of a large
mixed audience at a one-day symposium. Many of the papers presented
at Nijenrode were of such a high quality that the decision to
publish a selection of them was an easy one. At the same time the
new series Nijenrode studies in business was initiated. All who
were involved, the policy committee of the N ijenrode studies, the
advisory and editorial board of the series, the publisher, and the
organizing committee of the seminar and symposium, acclaimed the
idea of publishing three volumes in the new series. A collection of
eleven papers could be grouped under the title Trends in managerial
andfinancial accounting. Another collection will be published as
volume 2 of this series under the title TI'ends in financial
decision-making, while volume 3 will consist of papers exploring
the theme Trends in business ethics. The books are intended for
those who are interested in new developments in the decision-making
area. They are especially suitable for graduate or advanced
undergraduate courses: volume 1 in managerial or financial
accounting courses; volume 2 in courses on managerial finance,
capital budgeting or decision making; and volume 3 in courses on
business ethics or related fields."
Prefaced by Bj rn Stigson, President of the World Business Council
for Sustainable Development, this book is one of the few that
treats this topic by putting representatives of industry at centre
stage. The book systematically addresses the drivers, the tools,
and sector-specific elements that play a role in this process. The
five chapters in Part I are devoted to a general introduction to
eco-efficiency and the related challenges to industry in its
implementation. Part II contains 23 case studies, almost all
written by industrial experts who tell how they deal with the
challenge: what the motivators are, what tools can be used and how
they can be implemented, and what are the specific elements in
sectors like building, electronics and packaging. These
contributions come from multinationals like Unilever, Procter &
Gamble, Akzo Nobel, Philips and Ciba-Geigy, as well as small and
medium sized enterprises from such sectors as the building and
furniture trades.

This collection follows anthropological perspectives on peoples
(Canadian Inuit, Norwegian Sami, Yupiit from Alaska, and Inuit from
Greenland), places, and practices in the Circumpolar North from
colonial times to our post-modern era. This volume brings together
fresh perspectives on theoretical concepts, colonial/imperial
descriptions, collaborative work of non-Indigenous and Indigenous
researchers, as well as articles written by representatives of
Indigenous cultures from an inside perspective. The scope of the
book ranges from contributions based on unpublished primary
sources, missionary journals, and fairly unknown early Indigenous
sources and publications, to those based on more recent Indigenous
testimonies and anthropological fieldwork, museum exhibitions, and
(self)representations in the fields of fashion, marketing, and the
arts. The aim of this volume is to explore the making of
representations for and/or by Circumpolar North peoples. The
authors follow what representations have been created in the past
and in some cases continue to be created in the present, and the
Indigenous employment of representations that has continuity with
the past and also goes beyond "traditional" utilization. By
studying these representations, we gain a better understanding of
the dynamics of a society and its interaction with other cultures,
notably in the context of the dominant culture's efforts to
assimilate Indigenous people and erase their story. People's ideas
about themselves and of "the Other" are never static, not even if
they share the same cultural background. This is even more the case
in the contact zone of the intercultural arena. Images of "the
Other" vary according to time and place, and perceptions of
"others" are continuously readjusted from both sides in
intercultural encounters. This volume has been prepared by the
Research Group Circumpolar Cultures (RGCC) which is based in the
Netherlands. Its members conduct research on social and cultural
change focusing on topics that are of interest to the Indigenous
peoples of the Arctic. The RGCC builds on a long tradition in
Arctic studies in the Netherlands (Nico Tinbergen, Geert van den
Steenhoven, Gerti Nooter, and Jarich Oosten) and can rely on rich
Arctic collections of artefacts and photographs in anthropological
museums and extensive library collections. The expertise of the
RGCC in Arctic studies is internationally acknowledged by academics
as well as circumpolar peoples.
