Es besteht kein consensus omnium, ob der nie zuvor gekannte Wohlstand der westlichen Industrienationen durch oder trotz Keynesianischer Wirtschaftspolitik entstanden ist. Ein Kon- sens scheint eher in der Auffassung zu liegen, daB die Wirt- schaftspolitik, so wie sie in den vergangenen zehn Jahren in den meisten Industrielandern betrieben wurde, kaum Erfolge fUr die Zukunft verspricht. Allein die Verneinung des Keynesianismus bringt jedoch noch keine theoretische Grund- lage fUr kUnftige Wirtschaftspolitik hervor. Der Vorteil der Keynesianischen Wirtschaftstheorie fUr die Konzeption einer Wirtschaftspolitik lag nicht zuletzt in der Simplizitat der ihr im Kern zugrunde liegenden makrookonomi- schen Verhaltensannahmen. Die Keynesianische Theorie hat je- doch den Nachteil, eine im Ursprung statische Theorie zu sein, deren Dynamisierung nur formal Uberzeugen kann. Der Keynesia- nismus hatte und konnte seine BlUte wohl auch nur zu einer Zeit relativ stabiler Makroverhaltensfunktionen erreichen. Mit der Renaissance der Gedanken von Max Weber und Joseph A. Schumpeter ist in den letzten Jahren wieder die Frage ge- stellt worden, was Menschen letztlich zur Arbeit, zum Produ- zieren veranlaBt. In Koinzidenz entstand in der Wirtschafts- theorie eine neue Problemsicht, in der der Markt als System von incentives aufgefaBt, und die Anreiz-Kompatibilitat wirtschaftspolitischer Eingriffe etwa auf moral hazard- Verhalten und Arbeits/Freizeit-Entscheidungen untersucht wird. Vielleicht ist es wichtiger, statt nach der Grenz- leistungsfahigkeit des Kapitals nach der Grenzleistungs- willigkeit des Menschen zu fragen.

Die Sekundarelektronenemission fester K6rper ist eine seit etwa 40 Jahren bekannte Erscheinung. Kurz nach ihrer Entdeckung hat sie nur wenige Forscher interessiert. Ais aber die Entladungsr6hre in immer zunehmender Formverschiedenheit in Gebrauch genommen wurde (Ver starkerr6hren, Kathodenstrahlr6hren, R6ntgenr6hren, Photozellen usw.), ist insbesondere von seiten der Technik die Sekundarelektronenemission eingehend untersucht worden. Seit 1935, als die ersten Entladungs rahren, bei denen die Sekundarelektronenemission zur Verstarkung schwacher Elektronenstr6me benutzt wurde, konstruiert wurden, ist eine groBe Anzahl Abhandlungen experimentell-technischer und theoretischer Art ver6ffentlicht worden. Ais ich vor 2 Jahren aufgefordert wurde, ein Buch iiber die Sekundar elektronenemission fester K6rper zu schreiben, war das eine schwierige Aufgabe. Die Anzahl der Ver6ffentIichungen iiber dieses Gebiet ist namlich sehr groB, ohne daB man sagen k6nnte, es sei iiber den Mecha nismus Einigkeit erzielt. Zur ErhOhung der Dbersichtlichkeit und Les barkeit des Buches habe ich als Leitfaden die Vorstellung gewahlt, die Dr. J. H. DE BOER und ich iiber die Sekundarelektronenemission ent wickelt haben. Ich war dadurch gezwungen, eine Anzahl Versuche anderer Forscher ausfiihrlich zu kritisieren, anderseits aber den Inhalt mancher Abhandlungen, die nach meiner Meinung wenig zur Kenntnis der Erscheinung beitragen konnten, nur kurz anzudeuten."

Das Physikalische aller Vorgange ist dabei in den Vordergrund geriickt. Konstruktive Einzelheiten sowie nur historisch Interessantes sind fort gelassen. Verschiedene Gebiete sind nach neuen Gesichtspunkten be handelt, so Federung, Reibung zwischen Reifen und nasser Fahrbahn und einzelne akustische Fragen. Wo es erforderlich erschien, sind auch umfangreichere Rechnungen wiedergegeben. Die Auswertung ist jedoch so dargestellt, daB das Ergebnis auch dem Leser verstiindlich ist, der die Ableitung iibersprungen hat. Bei der Wiedergabe der Ergebnisse ist weitgehend von der graphischen Darstellung Gebrauch gemacht und es sind nach Moglichkeit praktische Beispiele zugrunde gelegt. Mit Riicksicht auf den beschriinkten Raum sind manche Gebiete nur kurz behandelt. Dies trifft besonders auf die Thermodynamik des Motors zu, welche in anderen Werken schon ausfiihrlich dargestellt ist."

This book is a study of time, particularly of the nature of subjective time-that is, time as subjectively experienced and lived in contrast with time as measured objectively as, for example, by a clock. The argument first addresses the development of the time experience, its origins in infantile experience, and traces its variations and modifications during the course of the life cycle. As the life course advances, concerns about and preoccupations with death play an increasingly important role in attitudes toward and involvement in temporally related contexts. The next step is an examination of the phenomenology of time experience itself and its dependence on biorhythms and affective influences. An important aspect of this discussion is the relation between time experience as a conscious phenomenon and the functioning of unconscious determinants of the time experience. This leads to the question: given these conclusions regarding the nature of time experience, what implications can we draw for the understanding of the nature and functioning of the self within psychoanalysis? The book's final section applies these understandings to the analytic process, focusing particularly on the meaning of the time experience in the patient's psychic reality and patterns of enactment around issues of time and time management in the analytic situation.

One point on which the various helping professions agree is that the crucial factor in the success of therapy is the therapeutic alliance-the collaborative relationship a particular therapist is able to form with a particular patient. W. W. There has been for a long time a powerful opposition between psychoanalysis and religious thinking, both because of the anti-religious attitudes and writings of Sigmund Freud and because of the hostility of theologians to Freud.
