Die vorliegende Abhandlung verdankt ihre Entstehung Studien tiber
die Grundprobleme der Gesch: vulstlehre und war in diesem Zusammen
hange bereits I9I3 niedergeschrieben (vgl. Frankf. Zschr. f.
Pathologie Bd. II, S. I und Bd. I2, S.367. I9I3). AuBere Umstande,
insbesondere der Krieg, verhinderten jedoch ihr Erscheinen und erst
in den letzten J ahren fand ich Zeit, sie nochmals grtindlich
umzuarbeiten und dem heutigen Stande des Wissens anzu passen. DaB
die Arbeit in recht vielen Punkten ltickenhaft ist und der
Erganzung bedtirfte, weiB niemand besser als der Verfasser. Aber es
lag weder in meiner Absicht, eine erschopfende mechanistische
"Philo sophie des Organischen" zu schreiben - das sei Berufenen
tiberlasse- noch wollte ich - so reizvoll das Problem erscheinen
mochte - noch weitere Arbeit darauf verwenden, zumal wir eine
Vertiefung der hier behandelten Probleme nur von weiterer
Aufklarung des Mechanismus der Lebenserscheinungen selbst erwarten
