Who hasn't asked: "What happens to me after I die?" and/or "Are we
alone in the universe?" Other Worlds: UFOs, Aliens, and the
Afterlife takes readers on a journey into other galaxies and into a
different time-a time after all of their tomorrows. How are the
societies organized on other planets and in the afterlife? This
book answers this question with a new approach in the UFO and the
Near-Death Experience fields. As readers take this trip, they will
wonder if there are universal laws governing the societies of
intelligent beings regardless of where they reside in existence.
Are humans projecting into foreign forms their own beliefs about
how societies should be arranged on Earth? Why study such ethereal
and controversial material? We always learn about ourselves when we
study those who are different from us, whether those beings are
real or not. Anyone who has read a good book of fiction knows the
validity of this point. Consider how many teenagers identify with
the characters in the Hunger Games books. What follows is the
sociological perspective. We will explore institutions, such as
marriage and the family, social classes, and culture. We will
determine the sex of alien travelers as well as the occupations of
their human witnesses. We will learn what the afterlife looks like,
and discover what messages deceased beings deliver to humans.
Game theory now provides the theoretical underpinning for a
multitude of courses in economics worldwide. The speed of these
developments has been remarkable and they have constituted
something of a revolution. Indeed, the basic tenets of game theory
have now begun to colonize other social sciences and its proponents
have been unified in claiming its natural basis as a rational
theory of society.
But the technical demands of the subject and the lack of clarity of
many commentators' explanations have been a problem for many. This
second edition of Shaun Hargreaves-Heap and Yanis Varoufakis's
classic text strips away the mystique and lets the student make his
or her own mind up. This new edition:
* lays bear the philosophy behind game theory and explains all its
major concepts
* conducts a clear explanation and careful analysis of all the main
'games', such as repeated games and the prisoner's dilemma, as well
as less well-trodden topics such as experimental games and issues
of rationality
* introduces and analyses new areas of game theory such as
"evolutionary games" and "Psychological games"
Retaining the most popular features from the original edition, this
latest version offers improved pedagogy, new questions for
discussion, new chapters on the latest developments as well as a
host of new examples. A new generation of students of game theory
will grow to appreciate this superb text whilst fans of the first
edition will eagerly devour this long-awaited update.
With Foreword by Pamela Davies, Northumbria University, UK The
study of victims and victimization has evolved to produce more
information about the effects and impacts of crime, as well as
victims' experiences of engagement with the criminal justice
system. This book analyses the socio-political context in which
particular groups of victims have been prioritised by UK
policy-makers in the past two decades as requiring enhanced or
targeted services.Focusing on anti-social behaviour and hate crime,
Duggan and Heap explore how separating victims according to
victimization type allows for a targeted approach which benefits
some and disadvantages others. They assess the extent to which
certain forms of victimization, or demarcated groups of victims,
have been used by governments to further punitive political agendas
under the guise of being 'victim-focused' or 'victim-led'. In so
doing, this book explores the changing role and status of the
victim in contemporary criminal justice discourses, as well as the
increased managerialism evident in facilitating victims' engagement
in the broader criminal justice system.
Jem and Mika have never met. Yet Jem and Mika's lives have intertwined, again and again, across lifetimes.
Have you ever locked eyes with a stranger and felt that you know them?
When perfect strangers Mika and Jem first meet by chance, they recognise each other – not from life, but from a shared dream. Both are wary of forming new connections and have their demons to fight: Jem is in recovery from a near-fatal accident, and Mika is undocumented and under scrutiny from the authorities.
As their dreams – or are they memories? – grow in intensity, they are forced to consider the possibility that they have known and loved each other over and over, across the centuries. Will they find happiness together this time?
Moving from present-day London through eras and across continents, LIFE NUMBER NINE is an epic literary achievement and a groundbreaking love story.

Food transportation represents a significant element of the food
industry with major implications for food product costs, in terms
of the direct costs associated with transportation, and those
potentially larger ones associated with poor product and packaging
quality which are consequences of inefficient and/or inappropriate
operation. This handbook is for both the transporter and food
producer, in that it bridges the interests and specializations of
both. The book covers both the logistics and food science, and
considers transport (i.e. land, sea, and air) as well as by its
food sector.

Originally published in 1991, this book covers a comprehensive
range of the applications of hypnotic techniques in therapy for
psychological disorders, and medical conditions where such
techniques are a valuable adjunct. In the years before publication
psychologists, medical doctors, dentists and allied professional
workers had come to make increasing use of hypnosis in their work,
and there was a considerable amount of relevant research literature
available in journals. Such literature is reviewed, and served as a
practical guide for professionals at the time. The book begins by
explaining what is meant by hypnosis today, and traces its
historical background. Some fundamental questions such as
individual differences in susceptibility to hypnosis are discussed
in relation to therapy. Separate chapters are devoted to the key
topics of behaviour therapy, different forms of psychotherapy,
psychosomatic medicine, the treatment of pain, and applications in
medical and surgical procedures. The modern status of hypnotic
techniques in obstetrics and in dentistry is reviewed, and a
separate chapter on the use of hypnosis with children will be of
special interest to educational and clinical psychologists. A final
chapter reviews the use of hypnosis by various professions and
para-medical disciplines, and discusses the possible abuses that
may arise both through unqualified people seeking to practise
"hypnotherapy", and by professionals acting outside their proper
range of competence.
Mixed Methods in Criminology is the first book to bring together
the discipline of criminology with the mixed methods research
strategy, which has become increasingly prominent within
criminological teaching and research. The book is structured so
that it charts the course of a criminological mixed methods study.
Starting with an introduction to mixed methods and its implications
for criminology and criminological research, the book then works
systematically through the planning stages of a research project.
Developing research questions, aims and objectives is discussed
alongside literature searching skills and the project planning
process, before the principles and practice of ethical research are
summarised. Next come chapters on philosophy, mixed methods design,
combining the data, research design and sampling, data collection
methods and data analysis; delivering a comprehensive overview of
how to undertake a mixed methods research project in practice. This
is followed by a chapter on troubleshooting, which provides useful
advice from experienced mixed methods researchers, before a
detailed account of how to write-up mixed methods research is
presented. The book concludes with a range of real-life mixed
methods case studies to demonstrate how the techniques outlined in
this book have been employed in reality and to inspire new
criminological mixed methods projects. Providing straightforward,
easy to follow guidance, Mixed Methods in Criminology is the
essential student companion for any criminological mixed methods
research project. Drawing on the authors' years of experience
teaching research methods, the book is written in a supportive and
encouraging tone that will serve as a reference and guide for those
embarking on their adventures 'in the field'.

This new book provides a clear and accessible guide on best
practice to support teachers when using process drama in
establishing creative learning partnerships with their students. It
offers a detailed analysis and explores the roles of actor,
director and playwright that the teacher must adopt in order to
develop the 'thinking on your feet' skills and knowledge necessary
to deliver a complete process drama experience. Addressing the
dynamic nature of process drama, it provides a clear and rigorous
explanation of the theory of process drama and links it to
practice. Drawing on a wide range of detailed examples from the
authors' international and cross-cultural practice, it demonstrates
how an effective process drama operates in action. Written to help
practitioners and students produce powerful, artistic and educative
experiences, chapters cover: pedagogy and the improvised nature of
the art form; the structural framework and making shifts in the
drama; the role of actor, director, playwright and teacher;
monitoring emotional range; progression and the importance of
reflection; the spiral of creative exchange and the complexities of
co-creativity. Putting Process Drama into Action will be an
essential guide for students undertaking initial teacher training
at primary level, in addition to those studying both Drama and
English at secondary level. It will also prove to be essential
reading for specialist and non-specialist teachers in the primary
and secondary sectors who teach, or wish to teach, process drama.
By offering an original elucidation of the notion of the
imagination in the writings ofImmanuel Kant, Johann Fichte and
Cornelius Castoriadis, this book addresses and brings to the fore
the significance of the imagination as the ontological source of
human creation.Principally inspired by Castoriadis's revolutionary
elucidation of the imagination and the imaginary, this book
actively contributes to this neglected line of enquiry by exposing
deep lines of continuity and rupture both within and between the
revolutionary writings of Kant, Fichte, and Castoriadis. Beginning
with Kant's hesitation in describing the productive imagination as
a creative power, this book traces these lines of continuity and
rupture through an elucidation of the form and content of Fichte's
philosophical system, known as the Wissenschaftslehre, and through
an elucidation of Castoriadis's remarkable concept of the radical
imaginary.Engaging with these lines of continuity and rupture
allows this book to contribute to the landscape of thinking by
offering a new elucidation of the imagination in the formof the
"embodied imagination."
Process drama is now firmly established, internationally, as a
powerful and dynamic pedagogy. This clear and accessible book
provides a practical, step-by-step guide to the planning of process
drama. Grounded in theory and illustrated in practice, it
identifies and explains the principles of planning and shows how
they can be applied across age ranges and curricula. Drawing on the
authors' wide-ranging practical experience and research, examples
are built up and run throughout the book, at each step showing how
and why the teachers' planning decisions were made. This second
edition features: a wider range of examples illustrating the
planning principles in practice two completely new chapters: one
deals with planning for diverse learner groups and the other moves
the reader on from the pre-action planning phase to the 'planning
on your feet' required as the drama unfolds. incorporated new
material to reflect recent understanding of how learning takes
place Written as a conversation between reader and authors,
Planning Process Drama will help practitioners to update and refine
their practice and strengthen their understanding, skills and
confidence. Planning Process Drama will be an essential guide for
students undertaking initial teacher training at primary level, in
addition to both Drama and English at secondary level, and a
Masters in Drama in Education. It will also prove to be valuable
reading for specialist and non-specialist teacher in both the
primary and secondary sectors who teach, or wish to teach, process
drama.
This new study of Menander casts fresh light not only on the
techniques of the playwright but also on the literary and
historical contexts of the plays. Menander (342/1-292/1 BCE) wrote
over a hundred popular comedies, several of which were adapted by
Plautus and Terence. Through them, he was a major influence on
Shakespeare and Moliere. However, his work survived only in
excerpts and quotation until some significant texts reappeared in
the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on papyrus. The mystery of
their loss and rediscovery has raised key questions surrounding the
transmission of these and other Greek texts. Theatrical masks from
the fourth century BCE discovered on the island of Lipari now also
provide important material with which this book examines how the
plays were originally performed. A detailed investigation of their
historical setting is offered which engages with recent debates on
the importance of social status and citizenship in Menander's
plays. The techniques of characterization are also examined, with
particular focus on women, slaves and power relationships in his
Epitrepontes. It appears that the audience was invited, sometimes
subversively, behind the mask of this sophisticated comedy to
discover that people do not always conform to literary expectations
and social norms.
