The Daily Coyote - A Story of Love, Survival, and Trust in the Wilds of Wyoming (Paperback): Shreve Stockton The Daily Coyote - A Story of Love, Survival, and Trust in the Wilds of Wyoming (Paperback)

- A fascinating true tale: When city girl Shreve Stockton set out to ride her Vespa from San Francisco to New York, she never imagined she'd end up staying in Wyoming, falling in love with a trapper, and working as a ranch hand. Nor could she have forseen meeting Charlie, the orphaned coyote pup who made Stockton's log cabin his home. In a world where coyotes are hunted as killers, Stockton and Charlie faced challenges--as well as joys--throughout their first year, each of which came with revelations about life, love, and the bond between humans and nature. . - Based on an award-winning blog: The Daily Coyote was inspired by Stockton's blog of the same name. Wildly popular and hailed by Rosie O'Donnell, Vanity Fair, and the L.A. Times, the site receives over a million hits per month and was the winner of the 2007 Weblog of the Year Award only a month after its inception. . - A moving visual memoir: Stockton documents Charlie's first year in stunning full-color photography. Each month's entry is accompanied by rich images of Charlie as he grows from adorable pup to wily adult, alongside Stockton's tomcat, Eli, and set against the wide-open landscapes of Wyoming. .

An Introduction to Queer Literary Studies - Reading Queerly (Paperback): Will Stockton An Introduction to Queer Literary Studies - Reading Queerly (Paperback)
Will Stockton
R1,090 Discovery Miles 10 900 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

An Introduction to Queer Literary Studies: Reading Queerly is the first introduction to queer theory written especially for students of literature. Tracking the emergence of queer theory out of gay and lesbian studies, this book pays unique attention to how queer scholars have read some of the most well-known works in the English language. Organized thematically, this book explores queer theoretical treatments of sexual identity, gender and sexual norms and normativity, negativity and utopianism, economics and neoliberalism, and AIDS activism and disability. Each chapter expounds upon foundational works in queer theory by scholars including Michel Foucault, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Lee Edelman. Each chapter also offers readings of primary texts -ranging from the highly canonical, like John Milton's Paradise Lost, to more contemporary works of popular fiction, like Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot. Along the way, An Introduction to Queer Literary Studies: Reading Queerly demonstrates how queer reading methods work alongside other methods like feminism, historicism, deconstruction, and psychoanalysis. By modelling queer readings, this book invites literature students to develop queer readings of their own. It also suggests that reading queerly is not simply a matter of reading work written by queer people. Queer reading attunes us to the queerness of even the most straightforward text.

This book explores desire between women as a form of "spiritual materialism" in writings by Luce Irigaray, Charlotte Bronte, and George Eliot. To begin with the study's underlying paradox, "spiritual materialism": the author wishes to understand why the act of grasping materialities--a sob in the body or the body itself--has so often required a spiritual discourse; why materialism, as a way of naming matter-on-its-own-terms, and material relations that still lie submerged, hidden from view, evoke the shadowy forms we call "spiritual."

What is sex exactly? Does everyone agree on a definition? And does that definition hold when considering literary production in other times and places? "Sex before Sex" makes clear that we cannot simply transfer our contemporary notions of what constitutes a sex act into the past and expect them to be true for the people who were then reading literature and watching plays. The contributors confront how our current critical assumptions about definitions of sex restrict our understanding of representations of sexuality in early modern England.

Drawing attention to overlooked forms of sexual activity in early modern culture, from anilingus and interspecies sex to "chin-chucking" and convivial drinking, "Sex before Sex" offers a multifaceted view of what sex looked like before the term entered history. Through incisive interpretations of a wide range of literary texts, including "Romeo and Juliet, The Comedy of Errors, Paradise Lost," the figure of Lucretia, and pornographic poetry, this collection queries what might constitute sex in the absence of a widely accepted definition and how a historicized concept of sex affects the kinds of arguments that can be made about early modern sexualities.

Late in the Reagan years, three young men at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University formed the Christian rap group dc Talk. The trio put out a series of records that quickly secured their place at the forefront of contemporary Christian music. But, with their fourth studio album Jesus Freak (1995), dc Talk staked a powerful claim on the worldly market of alternative music, becoming an evangelical group with secular selling power. This book sets out to study this mid-90s crossover phenomenon-a moment of cultural convergence between Christian and secular music and an era of particular political importance for American evangelicalism. Written by two queer scholars with evangelical pasts, Jesus Freak explores the importance of a multifarious album with complex ideas about race, sexuality, gender, and politics-an album where dc Talk wonders, "What will people do when they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?" and evangelical fans stake a claim for Christ-like coolness in a secular musical world.

After abandoning the family, Kate Bonnet sets out to find and reprimand her pirate father, Stede, who is being targeted by multiple figures including Blackbeard. She meets various people along her journey who help make the trek worth her while. Kate Bonnet is the fictional daughter of the renowned pirate, Stede Bonnet. In Stockton’s interpretation, she’s a steadfast young woman whose father left the family to fend for themselves. Despite personal objections, Kate travels to find Stede and bring him back home. Throughout her venture, she encounters many people some of whom become traveling companions. She also crosses paths with a Naval officer who plans to capture Stede and barter his freedom for Kate’s hand in marriage. Kate Bonnet: The Romance of a Pirate’s Daughter is an entertaining mix of historical fiction. Despite the title, the story is not a traditional romance. The heroine has agency and ideals that go beyond courtship and marriage. She’s dedicated to her family and righting her father’s many wrongs. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Kate Bonnet: The Romance of a Pirate’s Daughter is both modern and readable.

"Here's the thing with kissing: it matters intensely or not at all." Mid-kiss, do you ever wonder who you are, who you're kissing, where it's leading? It can feel luscious, libidinal, friendly, but are we trying to make out something through our kissing? For Kathryn Bond Stockton, making out is a prism through which to look at the cultural and political forces of our world: race, economics, childhood, books, and movies. Making Out is Stockton's memoir about a non-binary childhood before that idea existed in her world. We think about kissing as we accompany Stockton to the bedroom, to the closet, to the playground, to the movies, and to solitary moments with a book, the ultimate source of pleasure. Avidly Reads is a series of short books about how culture makes us feel. If given another chance to write for the series, which albums would 33 1/3 authors focus on the second time around? This anthology features compact essays from past 33 1/3 authors on albums that consume them, but about which they did not write. It explores often overlooked and underrated albums that may not have inspired their 33 1/3 books, but have played a large part in their own musical cultivation. Questions central to the essays include: How has this album influenced your worldview? How does this album intersect with your other creative and critical pursuits? How does this album index a particular moment in cultural history? In your own personal history? Why is the album perhaps under-the-radar, or a buried treasure? Why can't you stop listening to it? Bringing together 33 1/3's rich array of writers, critics, and scholars, this collection probes our taste in albums, our longing for certain tunes, and our desire to hit repeat--all while creating an expansive "must-listen" list for readers in search of unexplored musical territories.

FINALIST for the 2022 California Book Awards in Poetry! FINALIST for the 2022 Publishing Triangle's Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry! "Permanent Volta is a lush collection of poetry about the possibilities of love outside capitalism, and love as a way to resist its abuses."-Vogue A debut collection of love poems that resist subjection and ask how we might live together outside of capitalism, providing for each other through intimate acts of care and struggle Permanent Volta is a book of poems about constraint and debt, as much as it is about excess, credit, loving luxury, and hating work. These are love poems about how queer intimacies invent political and poetic forms, how gender deviance imagines post-sovereign presents and futures. Taking cues from Rosa Luxemburg's birdsongs and the syntax of invasive flowers, these poems strive to love lack. If history sees writers as tops and muses as bottoms, these poems are motivated by refusal, inversion, and evading representation. In Permanent Volta, the muses demand wages, and then they demand the world. Full of bad grammar, strange sonnets, and truncated sestinas, these poems are melancholy and militant, lazy and anti-state, greedy and collective. Permanent Volta is for anyone motivated by the homoerotic and intimate etymology of comrade: one who shares the same room.

"Brother Woodrow" - A Memoir of Woodrow Wilson by Stockton Axson (Paperback): Stockton Axson, Arthur S. Link "Brother Woodrow" - A Memoir of Woodrow Wilson by Stockton Axson (Paperback)
Stockton Axson, Arthur S. Link
R1,494 Discovery Miles 14 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This memoir of Woodrow Wilson is a long-neglected treasure, full of the candid and perceptive observations of Wilson's brother-in-law and close friend, Stockton Axson. A charming and talented scholar of English literature, Axson became one of the few people in whom the reticent Wilson confided freely. Axson and Wilson met in 1884, when Wilson was courting Axson's sister Ellen, while Axson was still a school boy. The friendship of the two men ended only with the president's death in 1924. Axson's fondness for his mentor, "Brother Woodrow," pervades this account, but he is frank in his analysis of Wilson's flaws. As one of only a few personal memoirs of Wilson, this book offers a uniquely intimate view of the "human side" of the introverted president--and a sensitive evocation of the social life of a bygone era.

Axson begins with memories of Wilson's father and of Wilson's life as a young man, including his engagement and marriage to Ellen Axson and his early teaching posts. Wilson taught for twelve years at Princeton University before his accession to its presidency, and Axson also taught there during this period. After Wilson began his stormy career as president of Princeton, Axson's bachelor quarters were often a meeting place for the "Wilson faction." His lucid analysis of Wilson's successes and failures as Princeton's president is one of the highlights of the book--and probably the best record of these years of Wilson's life.

The book ends with a look behind the scenes of Wilson's career as governor of New Jersey and president of the United States, and an analysis of the growing complexity of his personality. "It is Uncle Joseph Wilson's father] in him," observed one relative of Wilson's seeming rigidity. From the standpoint of a loving family member, Axson offers a penetrating but sympathetic report on how Wilson changed as he bore the terrible burdens of World War I and its aftermath.

A Pen and a Path is a hands-on, practical resource for people who want to explore their relationship with God through writing. Unlike other books that focus on writing itself, Sarah Stockton focuses on the discoveries made--about one's self and about God--through meditation and creative journaling. A Pen and a Path is a book for anyone who wants to explore where God has been present in the various experiences of their life, past and present. Stockton, a spiritual director and writing teacher, walks readers through thirty-five separate topics, which can be read and worked on in order or in any sequence of interest to the reader. Topics explored include religious understandings such as how God is envisioned, how religious training formed (or didn't form) the reader, and how we envision ourselves as spiritual beings. Other chapters explore life stages: childhood, teenage years, elder years, as well as marriage, parenting, and sexuality. Focusing on emotions such as grief, shame, anger, and loneliness, as well as feelings about work provide readers with the opportunity to explore nearly any aspect of their life of faith.
