For Socrates, philosophy was the study of how to lead one's life.
For Wittgenstein, "philosophy leaves everything as it is." "Ancient
Concepts of Philosophy" sets the work of the ancients in the
context of the most recent thinking about the nature and value of
philosophy.
6 June 1944 marked the beginning of the Allied liberation of France - and Europe. But what does the 'D' in D-Day stand for? Why were the code names Omaha, Utah, Gold chosen? How many casualties were there on D-Day? How did they keep the operation secret? Why land at Omaha, the 'Bloody' beach? What happened to Rommel? The latest addition to the Pitkin Collectable series, D-Day Decoded answers these questions and many more as it uncovers the facts and secrets behind the greatest landing-force ever assembled.
The earliest forms of representative government were to be found in Maryland from its founding in 1632. In this book, David W. Jordan traces the establishment of the legislative assembly, the development of that central institution through the seventeenth century, and changing opinions about its proper place in the governance of Maryland. Considerable discord initially existed in Maryland and other colonies over the appropriate powers and organization of any assembly of freemen. The colonial proprietors - the Calverts -never envisaged as active a body as many colonists desired, nor one so independent of proprietary dominance. Specific issues of contention varied, but throughout the century debates erupted over the role of the freemen and their representatives within the legislature. Ultimately, the resumption of proprietary authority in 1715 brought an important acknowledgment of substantial gains in representative government that became the foundation of the American political system.

In this unique memoir, William Jordan's chance encounter with a stray cat leads to the formation of an unexpectedly deep bond, one that will be immediately familiar to anyone who has ever fallen under the spell of a pet. Jordan reluctantly adopts Darwin and presently begins to capitulate to the whims of this fickle feline, eventually clearing a large emotional and mental space for his companion. The endearing memoir of their relationship is made fresh and irresistible by "Jordan's self-effacing honesty, his ever-present wit and above all, the unashamed nakedness of his emotions" (San Diego Union-Tribune). Through issues of territory and separation, sickness and health, Jordan observes the cat not only with the love-struck gaze of a doting pet owner, but also with the keen eye of a trained scientist, ruminating insightfully on the complex relationship between humans and their pets. In the tradition of Cleveland Amory and Caroline Knapp, Jordan charts the way his beloved pet informs his growth as a human.
