The intelligibility of nature was a persistent theme of William A. Wallace, OP, one of the most prolific Catholic scholars of the late twentieth century. This Reader aims to make available a representative selection of his work in the history of science, natural philosophy, and theology illustrating his defense and development of this central theme. Wallace is among the most important Galileo scholars of the past fifty years and a key figure in the recent revival of scientific realism. Further, his long and productive scholarly career has been shaped by a continuous effort to bring the resources of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition to the solution of contemporary problems of philosophy and science. Through all of these contributions, Wallace has provided the foundation for a renewed confidence in the capacity of human knowers to attain understanding of the natural order. Consequently, the overall aim of this volume is to secure continued access to his scholarship for readers in the new millennium. Intelligibility of Nature contains twenty-nine previously published essays written by Wallace over a period of some forty years. Many of these essays are currently not readily accessible. They are arranged in five thematic groups, each representing a major subject-area of Wallace's scholarly interests. The first group is devoted to essays on making nature intelligible through the use of scientific models. The second group of essays investigates various ways in which the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition is foundational to contemporary scientific research. Essays in the third group are historical studies on the origins of modern science. The fourth group of essays discuss the viability of the cosmological argument for the existence of God in light of natural science. The final group of essays consider the relation of science and religion. Together these essays provide a representative sample of Wallace's multifaceted contributions to scholarship.

In 'Where No One Has Gone Before', a warp experiment goes wrong and flings the Enterprise into a strange galaxy billions of light-years from its starting point. 'Lonely Among Us' has Picard's body becomes the host for an alien entity. 'Justice' sees the unfortunate Wes Crusher sentenced to death for violating a local custom on an alien world. 'The Battle' finds Picard taking on DaiMan Bok, who wants revenge for the death of his son. 'Hide and Q' has the crew of the Enterprise D plagued once more by the cosmic trickster Q. 'Haven' sees Riker's heart set to break when Deanna is forced into an arranged marriage. In 'The Big Goodbye', Picard indulges his love of film noir detective stories on the holodeck, only to end up trapped when the system malfunctions. 'Datalore' has the crew of the Enterprise discover the component parts of Lore, Data's twin brother, on a devastated planet. 'Angel One' sees Riker caught up in the politics of a planet ruled entirely by women. '11001001' finds the Enterprise hijacked by an alien race called the Bynars, who upgrade the ship's computer to their own ends. 'Too Short a Season' has the Enterprise accompany the ageing Admiral Mark Jameson to Mordan IV, where his mission is to secure the release of Federation hostages. 'When the Bough Breaks' sees Wesley and various other children from the Enterprise kidnapped by the technologically advanced but sterile civilisation on the planet Aldea. In 'Home Soil', it transpires that the Enterprise is under attack from Microbain, a microscopic life-form, after Data is attacked by a laser drill. 'Coming of Age' finds Wesley preparing to sit an Academy exam, while Picard is investigated by the unpopular Lt Commander Dexter. 'Heart of Glory' has the Enterprise play host to two Klingons who claim to have been attacked by Ferengi. 'The Arsenal of Freedom' sees Picard lead a team to the lifeless planet Minos to search for the USS Drake. 'Symbiosis' finds Picard caught in the middle of a war between the narcotics-addicted Ornarans and their enemies the Brekkans, who possess a possible cure. In 'Skin of Evil', an Enterprise shuttlecraft crash lands on Vagra II and is captured by the evil Armus. 'We'll Always Have Paris' sees the man married to Picard's first love create a hole in the universe. 'Conspiracy' has Picard's best friend suffer from an acute paranoia which leads to the destruction of his starship being destroyed. Finally, in 'The Neutral Zone', the crew encounter an enemy stronger than any they have come across before.

The unifying theme in this second volume of essays by William A. Wallace to be published in the Variorum series is signaled in the title of the opening paper: 'Domingo de Soto and the Iberian roots of Galileo's science'. The seven essays in the first part provide textual studies of Soto's early formulations of the laws of falling bodies, the context in which they were developed in the 16th century, and the ways in which they were transmitted in Spain and Portugal to the early 17th century, mainly by Jesuit scholars. The following essays focus on the young Galileo and his work at Pisa and Padua, leading to his discovery of the law of uniform acceleration in free fall. Textual evidence is presented for an indirect influence of Soto's work on Galileo, mediated by Jesuits who were teaching at Padua in the first decade of the 17th century.

The conventional opposition of scholastic Aristotelianism and humanistic science has been increasingly questioned in recent years, and in these articles William Wallace aims to demonstrate that a progressive Aristotelianism in fact provided the foundation for Galileo's scientific discoveries. The first series of articles supply much of the documentary evidence that has led the author to the sources for Galileo's early notebooks: they show how Galileo, while teaching or preparing to teach at Pisa, actually appropriated much of his material from Jesuit lectures given at the Collegio Romano in 1598-90. The next articles then trace a number of key elements in Galileo's later work, mainly relating to logical methodology and natural philosophy, back to sources in medieval Aristotelian thought, notably in the writings of Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas. The use of mathematical models to support decision making is proliferating in both the public and private sectors. Advances in computer technology and greater opportunities to learn the appropriate techniques are extending modeling capabilities to more and more people.

As powerful decision aids, models can be both beneficial or harmful. At present, few safeguards exist to prevent model builders or users from deliberately, carelessly, or recklessly manipulating data to further their own ends. Perhaps more importantly, few people understand or appreciate that harm can be caused when builders or users fail to recognize the values and assumptions on which a model is based or fail to take into account all the groups who would be affected by a model's results.

This volume provides a setting for a dialogue about ethics and shows the need to continue and define a vocabulary for exploring ethical concerns. It will become increasingly important for model builders and users to have a clear and strong code of ethics to guide them in making the ethical decisions they surely will have to face.

As the new millennium approaches, our scientific knowledge of the universe surpasses that of any previous age. Yet, paradoxically, the philosophy of science movement is now in disarray. The collapse of logical empiricism and the rise of historicism and social constructivism have effectively left all of the sciences without an epistemology. The claims of realism have become increasingly difficult to justify, and, for many, the only alternatives are probabilism, pragmatism, and relativism. But the case is not hopeless. According to William A.Wallace, a return to a realist concept of nature is plausible and, indeed, much needed. Human beings have a natural ability to understand the world in which they live. Many have suggested this understanding requires advanced logic and mathematics. Wallace believes that nature can more readily be understood with the aid of simple modeling techniques. Through an ingenious use of iconic and epistemic models, Wallace guides the reader through the fundamentals of natural philosophy, explaining how the universe is populated with entities endowed with different natures-- inorganic, plant, animal, and human. Wallace has taught philosophy of science at the University of Maryland since 1988. For twenty-five years prior to that, he taught both the philosophy and history of science at The Catholic University of America. He served with distinction as a naval officer during World War II, following which he entered the Dominican Order, being ordained a priest in 1953. William A. Wallace, executive officer on the famous SS Great Eastern, gives a fascinating account of the vessel's first voyage to North America in 1860. Believing the Great Eastern to have enlisted the sympathy of the British public generally; and I may say of the whole civilized world; I think it not out of place, on the satisfactory completion of her first voyage across the Atlantic, to publish a brief, but plain and unvarnished account of her doings; and the fact of my having had the honour of assisting in the navigation of this noble specimen of naval architecture to the shores of the New World and back to the Old Country, will, I trust, be a sufficient excuse for my presumption.
