Der menschliche Organismus stand schon immer unter Einflussen von ionisieren- den Strahlen. Die Strahleneinwirkungen sind aber erst in diesem Jahrhundert zu einer echten Gefahr geworden. Zunachst waren es die fur die Humanmedizin so segens- reichen Entdeckungen der Rontgendiagnostik und der Strahlentherapie, welche fur einzelne Berufsgruppen und Kranke eine VergroBerung der radioaktiven Gefahrdung mit sich brachten. Zwangslaufig ergab sich die Frage nach der ohne Schaden tragbaren Strahlenbelastung, beziehungsweise nach Moglichkeiten des Strahlenschutzes. Die Entdeckung cler Kernspaltung und besonders die Schockwirkung der ersten Atombombenexplosion im Jahre 1945 mit deren verheerenden Folgen gaben cliesen Fragen allgemeine Bedeutung. Die Menschheit war aufgeruttelt, und Angst, Unsicher- heit, aber auch Unkenntnis und Unverstand verbreiteten eine weltweite Strahlen- hysterie. Diese richtete sich verstandlicherweise nicht nur gegen das Schreckensgespenst eines Atomkrieges, sondern gab auch AnlaB zu vielen gefuhlsbetonten Protesten gegen die friedliche Ausnutzung der Atomenergie, ja ganz allgemein gegen die An- wen dung ionisierender Strahl en fur diagnostische und therapeutische Zwecke. 1m Strom einer besonders von Seiten der Laien verstandlichen Besorgnis gegen jede Art von Radioaktivitat nahmen auch aIle Forschungen uber Strahlendosierung, Strahl en- messung, Strahlenwirkung und Strahlenschutz einen groBen und dringend notigen Aufschwung.
