R1,409 Discovery Miles 14 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The European Review of Social Psychology is an annual series that reflects the dynamism of social psychology in Europe and has been widely accepted as one of the major international series in social psychology. The series is open to authors from all nations and its major purpose is to further the international exchange of ideas by providing an outlet for substantial accounts of theoretical and empirical work. However, even though the series is worldwide in terms of the nationality of the authors, it is European in terms of the nationality of the editors who select the contributions and shape the editorial policies. With the help of an editorial board consisting of senior scholars from various European countries, Australasia, and North America, the editors invite outstanding researchers to contribute to these volumes. Invitations are based either on suggestions from editorial board members or made in response to proposals submitted to the editors. The emphasis of these contributions is on critical assessment of major areas of research and of substantial individual programmes of research as well as on topics and initiatives of contemporary interest and originality.

The Goal Conflict Model of Eating Behavior - Selected Works of Wolfgang Stroebe (Hardcover): Wolfgang Stroebe The Goal Conflict Model of Eating Behavior - Selected Works of Wolfgang Stroebe (Hardcover)
Wolfgang Stroebe
R3,890 Discovery Miles 38 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major practical theoretical contributions. In this volume: Overweight and obesity rates have increased dramatically in most industrialized countries, even though more and more people are chronically dieting. Dieters can manage to lose substantial amounts of weight while actively dieting, but most regain it within a few years. So why do most chronic dieters have such difficulty controlling their weight and why is there only a small minority of successful dieters? To address these questions, Stroebe developed the goal conflict model of eating behavior, a social cognitive theory that attributes the difficulty of chronic dieters to a conflict between two incompatible goals: eating enjoyment and weight control. Although chronic dieters are motivated to pursue their weight control goal, most fail in food-rich environments: Surrounded by palatable food cues that activate thoughts of eating enjoyment, incompatible weight control thoughts are inhibited and weight control intentions are "forgotten". For successful dieters - probably due to past success in exerting self-control - tasty high-calorie food has become associated with weight control thoughts. For them, exposure to palatable food makes weight control thoughts more accessible, enabling them to control their body weight in food-rich environments. This book contains the key articles of a research program by Stroebe and collaborators to assess the validity of this theory. They succeeded in tracing the processes that lead from temptation to a breakdown of dieting intentions. They also demonstrated that these theoretical principles can be used to develop effective weight loss interventions. The book should be of value for all researcgers, students and clinicians involved in obesity research and treatment.

Dieting, Overweight and Obesity - Self-Regulation in a Food-Rich Environment (Paperback, 2nd edition): Wolfgang Stroebe Dieting, Overweight and Obesity - Self-Regulation in a Food-Rich Environment (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Wolfgang Stroebe
R1,272 Discovery Miles 12 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why do so many people become overweight and obese and why do they find it so difficult to lose weight? In this second edition of his influential book on Dieting, Overweight and Obesity, Wolfgang Stroebe - who developed the goal conflict model of eating - explores the physiological, environmental and psychological influence on weight gain and examines how these processes are affected by genetic factors. Like the first edition, the book takes a social-cognitive approach to weight regulation and discusses how exposure to environmental cues can set-off overeating in chronic dieters. In addition to extensively revising and updating the chapters of the first edition, this second edition features three new chapters. The chapter on successful restrained eating reviews personality factors as well as recent experimental research on impulse control. The chapters on psychological treatment of obesity and on primary prevention describe and evaluate the various treatment and prevention approaches and the research conducted to assess their efficacy. This book is essential reading for students, researchers and clinicians interested in an up-to-date review of the field of eating research and a new theoretical approach to the study of overweight and obesity.

The European Review of Social Psychology is an e-first journal published under the auspices of the European Association of Social Psychology. Visit www.psypress.com/ersp for the journal's full Aims and Scope. This volume contains reviews of research programs by leading researchers on central topics of social psychology such as attitudes, social projection, social power, coalition formation, inter-group conflict and strategies to reduce prejudice. To give only a few examples, chapters on attitude range from a social identity approach to attitude research (Smith & Hogg) to a review of findings on the relationship between implicit and explicit measures of attitudes and stereotypes based on data from more than 2 million respondents (Nosek and colleagues). Chapters on intergroup conflict range from a review of research on the interindividual-intergroup discontinuity effect (Wildschut & Insko) to presentations of research programs based on two new theoretical approaches, the revised common ingroup identity model (Dovidio and colleagues) and the ingroup projection model (Wenzel, Mummendey and colleagues). Research on the reduction of prejudice through direct and extended cross-group friendship is discussed by Turner, Hewstone and colleagues.

The Psychology of Advertising (Paperback, 3rd edition): Bob M. Fennis, Wolfgang Stroebe The Psychology of Advertising (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Bob M. Fennis, Wolfgang Stroebe
R1,472 Discovery Miles 14 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Psychology of Advertising offers a comprehensive exploration of theory and research in (consumer) psychology on how advertising impacts the thoughts, emotions and actions of consumers. It links psychological theories and empirical research findings to real-life industry examples, showing how scientific research can inform marketing practice. Advertising is a ubiquitous and powerful force, seducing us into buying wanted and sometimes unwanted products and services, donating to charitable causes, voting for political candidates and changing our health-related lifestyles for better or worse. This revised and fully updated third edition of The Psychology of Advertising offers a comprehensive and state-of-the art overview of psychological theorizing and research on the impact of online and offline advertising and discusses how the traces consumers leave on the Internet (their digital footprint) guides marketers in micro-targeting their advertisements. The new edition also includes new coverage of big data, privacy, personalization and materialism, and engages with the issue of the replication crisis in psychology, and what that means in relation to studies in the book. Including a glossary of key concepts, updated examples and illustrations, this is a unique and invaluable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and instructors. Suitable for psychology, advertising, marketing and media courses. It is also a valuable guide for professionals working in advertising, public health, public services and political communication.

Bereavement And Health - The Psychological And Physical Consequences Of Partner Loss (Paperback): Wolfgang Stroebe, Margaret S.... Bereavement And Health - The Psychological And Physical Consequences Of Partner Loss (Paperback)
Wolfgang Stroebe, Margaret S. Stroebe
R911 Discovery Miles 9 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Does the popular notion of a 'broken heart' have some grounding in reality? How can grief affect the body in ways that necessitate medical care and may even be life-threatening? Bereavement and Health constitutes a comprehensive review of what is known about the impact of bereavement on surviving partners. Drawing on the work of psychologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, and psychiatrists, Wolfgang and Margaret Stroebe offer a theoretically coherent perspective focused on conjugal loss. After a thorough discussion of stress and depression models of bereavement, the authors present their own theoretical approach, emphasizing social contacts and the interpersonal nature of grief. They then examine the psychological and medical consequences of bereavement: Are the bereaved at higher risk than those who have not lost a partner? What has research revealed about the causes, symptoms, and outcomes of grief? Key questions about recovery from grief are also addressed: Is the health risk of bereavement severe enough to have lasting or even fatal consequences? Is it possible to identify those bereaved who are at high risk before their health suffers? What are the strategies that are most likely to lead to effective coping? Can attempts at intervention be effective? The Stroebes' combination of theoretical integration and methodological rigor will make Bereavement and Health a standard text for years to come.

Stereotyping and Prejudice - Changing Conceptions (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): Daniel. Bar-Tal,... Stereotyping and Prejudice - Changing Conceptions (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Daniel. Bar-Tal, Carl F. Graumann, Arie W. Kruglanski, Wolfgang Stroebe
R1,467 Discovery Miles 14 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The study of stereotyping and prejudice is a study of human nature, group mem bership, and intergroup relationships. It sheds light on each of these aspects of social psychology. With respect to the first two, it has been observed that since groups provide the best framework for satisfying various human needs, individuals continuously organize themselves in collectives. They belong to a variety of groups-many of which they voluntarily select and some to which they are ascribed. Group membership, therefore, is one of the most salient and important of an indi vidual's characteristics. The implication of this characteristic is that human beings not only constantly classify other people into group categories, either by identifying membership or constructing their own categories, but also judge and evaluate them on this basis. The stereotypes and prejudice are outcomes of this process. They are the beliefs and attitudes toward members of another group. In addition, the study of stereotyping and prejudice reflects an interest in inter group relationships. While we recognize that a discussion of intergroup relation ships may focus on behaviors describing actions such as confrontations, violence, wars, cooperation, alliance, negotiation, or coordination, we also believe that each of these intergroup behaviors is mediated by perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes. In the case of intergroup behaviors, the listed actions are not performed instinctively or mindlessly, but are preceded by cognitive processes which, among other outputs, involve the formation of stereotypes and prejudice toward the other group.

The Social Psychology of Intergroup Conflict - Theory, Research and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original... The Social Psychology of Intergroup Conflict - Theory, Research and Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)
Wolfgang Stroebe, Arie W. Kruglanski, Daniel. Bar-Tal, Miles Hewstone
R1,442 Discovery Miles 14 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The area of intergroup relations and social conflict has once again become a major focus of social psychological theorizing and research. One of the consequences of this advance in knowledge is that social psychologists have increasingly been called upon to apply their ideas in order to advise on existing conflicts. The significant contribution of this book is the way it builds on the research and theory of intergroup conflict and then applies this knowledge to the field. The areas discussed include industrial conflicts, interethnic conflicts and intergroup conflicts. The chapters range from reports of experimental laboratory research, through field studies, to theoretical-conceptual contributions. The new advances offered by this broad spectrum of topics will be of interest not only to social psychologists, but also to sociologists and political scientists.

Does the concept of a broken heart have some grounding in reality? Can grief affect the body in ways that necessitate medical care and may even be life-threatening? Scholars from diverse disciplines report on research and explore key issues in this comprehensive review of scientific knowledge on the consequences of losing a loved person through death. Detailed coverage is given to the phenomenology of grief, distinctions between normal and pathological grief, and measurement and assessment techniques. Current theories are reviewed and underlying physiological mechanisms are surveyed, which help explain why the bereaved are highly vulnerable to ill health. Analyses also go beyond the consideration of marital bereavement to consider many different types of loss, including the special cases of bereavement among AIDS survivors and Holocaust survivors. Evaluations are provided of the availability and efficacy of many different types of support for bereaved people, ranging from informal help to self-help groups to various counseling and therapy intervention programs.

Handbook of the History of Social Psychology (Hardcover, New): Arie W. Kruglanski, Wolfgang Stroebe Handbook of the History of Social Psychology (Hardcover, New)
Arie W. Kruglanski, Wolfgang Stroebe
R3,533 Discovery Miles 35 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For the first time in the history of social psychology, we have a handbook on the history of social psychology. In it, leading luminaries in the field present their take on how research in their own domains has unfolded, on the scientists whose impact shaped the research agendas in the different areas of social psychology, and on events, institutions and publications that were pivotal in determining the field s history.

Social psychology s numerous subfields now boast a rich historical heritage of their own, which demands special attention. The Handbook recounts the intriguing and often surprising lessons that the tale of social psychology s remarkable ascendance has to offer. The historical diversity is the hallmark of the present handbook reflecting each of this field s domains unique evolution.

Collectively, the contributions put a conceptual mirror to our field and weave the intricate tapestry of people, dynamics and events whose workings combined to produce what the vibrant discipline of social psychology is today. They allow the contemporary student, scholar and instructor to explore the historical development of this important field, provide insight into its enduring aims and allow them to transcend the vicissitudes of the zeitgeist and fads of the moment.

The Handbook of the History of Social Psychology provides an essential resource for any social psychologist s collection.

Social Psychology and Health (Paperback, 3rd edition): Wolfgang Stroebe Social Psychology and Health (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Wolfgang Stroebe
R1,076 Discovery Miles 10 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Which behaviour patterns are detrimental to health? Why do people engage in such behaviour, even if they know about its negative effects? How can people be influenced to change their behaviour? This popular textbook addresses these key questions from a social psychological perspective. Recent research has been added to the new edition including the author's own research into obesity, sexual risk behaviour, and the stressful consequences of losing a marriage partner through death. The epidemiological information and references have been extensively updated.

By integrating theories and research on automatic behaviour with the more traditional reasoned action approach, the book provides a new answer to the age-old puzzle of health research; why people engage in behaviour which they know will damage their health. The book also: Discusses determinants of health behaviour, based on the most recent research on social cognition Includes a review of research on the health impact of health behaviour and stress Considers how behaviour is influenced by environmental factors outside individual awareness Argues for an integrative approach that combines psychological, economic and environmental interventions in order to reduce the potential risk to health arising from behaviour or stressful events. "Social Psychology and Health 3rd edition" is essential reading for students taking social and health psychology courses. It is also useful for students of health and social welfare and provides a reference for health researchers and health professionals.
