Wolfram's Parzival continues to inspire and influence, in modern times works as diverse as Wagner's Parsifal and Lohengrin, Franz Kafka's The Castle, Terry Gilliam's film The Fisher King, and Umberto Eco's Baudolino. Vast in its scope, incomparably dense in its imagery, Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival ranks alongside Dante's Divine Comedy as one of the foremost narrative works to emerge from medieval Europe. This book is a newtranslation of Parzival, together with the fragments of the Titurel, an elegiac offshoot of Parzival, and the nine love-songs attributed to Wolfram. Parzival is the greatest of the medieval Grail romances. In its depth and complexity of characterisation this work of the early thirteenth century anticipates the modern novel. It encompasses deeds of chivalry, tournaments and sieges, courtly love, and other erotic undertakings, but also sin and penance, and a deeply moving study in depression. Centre stage are the Grail Castle and Arthur's Round Table, but the pagan world of the Orient also is also reflected. Parzival has inspired and influenced works as diverse as Wagner's Parsifal and Lohengrin, Franz Kafka's The Castle, Terry Gilliam's film The Fisher King, and Umberto Eco's Baudolino. Wolframs "Titurel" gehoert zu den bedeutendsten Dichtungen des Mittelalters. Er ist in drei Handschriften uberliefert, deren Texte sich so stark unterscheiden, dass man von Fassungen sprechen muss. Das Verhaltnis dieser Fassungen zu einem mutmasslichen Original ist nicht bestimmbar. Die UEberlieferungslage wird zusatzlich dadurch kompliziert, dass das Werk im sogenannten "Jungeren Titurel" (von einem gewissen Albrecht) weitergedichtet wurde, bei dessen Tradierung man Wolframs Text mehrfach nachverglichen hat. Die UEberlieferung des "Jungeren Titurel" erganzt damit die UEberlieferung der alten Fragmente und gibt wichtige Hinweise zu deren Beurteilung. Die neue Ausgabe bietet in synoptischer Anordnung erstmals selbstandige kritische Texte der drei Fassungen, die durch vollstandige UEbersetzungen, einen Sprach- und Sachkommentar und ein ausfuhrliches Verzeichnis der Eigennamen fur das Verstandnis erschlossen werden. Ein umfangreicher Dokumentationsteil stellt zusatzlich den Text der drei Handschriften in diplomatischer Transkription bereit und verzeichnet die gesamte Paralleluberlieferung des "Jungeren Titurel", die bisher nur in kleinen Ausschnitten bekannt war. Die Einleitung enthalt neben den obligatorischen Informationen zur UEberlieferung und zur Einrichtung der Ausgabe eine einlassliche Analyse der schwierigen Metrik.

This edition of the Middle High German epic presents a text close to the ms., but in which the orthography has been normalised to aid readability. It is based on the St Gallen Codex 857 (MS D), which is regarded as the most reliable text. Karl Lachmanna (TM)s seminal edition of Parzival from 1833 was intended to present a text such as might have been encountered by an educated reader in the first half of the 13th century. This new edition moves closer towards realising this aim by keeping close to the oldest complete manuscript available and only making corrections where the manuscript text is faulty.
