Distribution Ecology - From Individual Habitat Use to Species Biogeographical Range (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Marcelo Hernan... Distribution Ecology - From Individual Habitat Use to Species Biogeographical Range (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Marcelo Hernan Cassini
R5,543 R4,908 Discovery Miles 49 080 Save R635 (11%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book brings together a set of approaches to the study of individual-species ecology based on the analysis of spatial variations of abundance. Distribution ecology assumes that ecological phenomena can be understood when analyzing the extrinsic (environmental) or intrinsic (physiological constraints, population mechanisms) that correlate with this spatial variation. Ecological processes depend on geographical scales, so their analysis requires following environmental heterogeneity. At small scales, the effects of biotic factors of ecosystems are strong, while at large scales, abiotic factors such as climate, govern ecological functioning. Responses of organisms also depend on scales: at small scales, adaptations dominate, i.e. the ability of organisms to respond adaptively using habitat decision rules that maximize their fitness; at large scales, limiting traits dominate, i.e., tolerance ranges to environmental conditions.

Ingun Grimstad Klepp, Tone Skardal Tobiasson
R4,574 Discovery Miles 45 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores the importance of the agriculturally-based fiber and textile industry, and how local, small-scale operations and markets, coupled with a connection to soil health, can lead the way to new transformative changes. It draws on a four-year research project on Norwegian wool, as well as similar studies in Poland and Portugal. It also explores the role of women and the Indigenous perspective: in Europe this will constitute Sami and Inuit, in Northern America the Inuit and First Nations in Canada, along with Native Americans. Born out of academic interest in the slow food movement, the importance of local raw materials has been put under the spotlight in recent years. Meanwhile, the havoc wreaked by the fast fashion industry has been drawing attention to the need for a new, sustainable approach to clothing and textile manufacture. This edited collection is unique in its scope, taking the conversation beyond traditional debates around fast fashion and agriculture, and examining how textile industry is rooted in the land, and within society and community. Featuring a diverse range of authors, the book will be valuable reading for academics interested in sustainable management, the study of consumption, the study of Indigenous perspectives, and the study of agricultural practices.

Rights of Nature - A Re-examination (Paperback): Daniel P. Corrigan, Markku Oksanen Rights of Nature - A Re-examination (Paperback)
Daniel P. Corrigan, Markku Oksanen
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Rights of nature is an idea that has come of age. In recent years, a diverse range of countries and jurisdictions have adopted these norms, which involve granting legal rights to nature or natural objects, such as rivers, forests, or ecosystems. This book critically examines the idea of natural objects as right-holders and analyzes legal cases, policies, and philosophical issues relating to this development. Drawing on contributions from a range of experts in the field, Rights of Nature: A Re-examination investigates the potential for this innovative idea to revolutionize the concepts of rights, standing, and recognition as traditionally understood in many legal systems. Taking as its starting point Stone's influential 1972 article "Should Trees Have Standing?," the book examines the progress rights of nature have made since that time, by identifying central themes, unifying principles, and key distinctions in how rights of nature discourse has been operationalized in the disciplines of law, philosophy, and the social sciences. These themes and principles are illustrated through a wide variety of examples, including ecosystem services, indigenous thinking, and ecological restoration, demonstrating how the relationship between humanity and the natural world may be transforming. Taking a philosophical, political, and legal perspective, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental law and policy, environmental ethics, and philosophy.

Human Landscapes in Classical Antiquity - Environment and Culture (Hardcover): John. Salmon, Graham Shipley Human Landscapes in Classical Antiquity - Environment and Culture (Hardcover)
John. Salmon, Graham Shipley
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Human Landscapes in Classical Antiquity shows how today's environmental and ecological concerns can help illuminate our study of the ancient world. The contributors consider how the Greeks and Romans perceived their natural world, and how their perceptions affected society. The effects of human settlement and cultivation on the landscape are considered, as well as the representation of landscape in Attic drama. Various aspects of farming, such as the use of terraces and the significance of olive growing are examined. The uncultivated landscape was also important: hunting was a key social ritual for Greek and hellenistic elites, and 'wild' places were not wastelands but played an essential economic role. The Romans' attempts to control their environment are analyzed.
This volume shows how Greeks and Romans worked hand in hand with their natural environment and not against it. It represents an outstanding collaboration between the disciplines of history and archaeology.

Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability: The Business of Sustainability (Hardcover, 1st): Chris Laszlo Berkshire Encyclopedia of Sustainability: The Business of Sustainability (Hardcover, 1st)
Chris Laszlo
R2,368 Discovery Miles 23 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Business of Sustainability is a core resource for policy makers, members of the development community, entrepreneurs, and corporate executives, as well as business and economics students and their professors. It contains rich analysis of how sustainability is being factored into industries across the globe, with enlightening case studies of businesses serving as agents of change. Contributing authors provide a groundbreaking body of research-based knowledge. They explain that the concept of sustainability is being re-framed to be positive about business instead of being tied to the old notion of a trade-off between business and society (that is, if business wins, society and the environment must lose), and they explore how economic development can contribute to building our common future.

Human Ecology - The Story of Our Place in Nature from Prehistory to the Present (Paperback, 2nd edition): Bernard Campbell Human Ecology - The Story of Our Place in Nature from Prehistory to the Present (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Bernard Campbell
R1,484 Discovery Miles 14 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This new edition of a widely adopted primary and supplementary text explores human adaptations to environments over time. It is biologically and culturally sophisticated, drawing on an impressive array of archaeological and paleontological research. Campbell proceeds from earlier, simpler biomes to later, more complex ones, examining selected aspects of the prehistory and history of the human species. Human Ecology offers a succinct introduction to the history of these adaptations within ecosystems: a shared concern among anthropologists, biologists, environmentalists, and the general reader.

In the years since this book was first published, the problems that the human species has faced have become more serious. As predicted, world population has rapidly increased, and with it starvation, malnutrition, and disease. Our precious environment is being devastated. In particular, the tropical rain forests, our richest resource, are being cut and burned at an alarming rate with the accompanying degradation of the forest soils. Their flora and fauna, including their human inhabitants, are being destroyed. All this is being done for short-term financial gain without any long-term planning or understanding of the risks involved.

There are no simple and humane short-term solutions to the central problem of increasing population pressure. In the long-term, the only hope of making possible a life of quality for all, rather than a life of starvation and squalor, is through education. It is essential that we understand the limits that exist to the earth's productivity and the overriding importance of maintaining richly diversified fauna and flora. If we understand how we arrived at this life-threatening situation, the resolution will become clear. Non-violent and viable solutions do exist and can be implemented, but the human race first must understand and face up to the nature of its frightening predicament.

The Waste of the World - Consumption, Economies and the Making of the Global Waste Problem (Hardcover): Nicky Gregson The Waste of the World - Consumption, Economies and the Making of the Global Waste Problem (Hardcover)
Nicky Gregson
R2,306 Discovery Miles 23 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Despite frequent claims that waste is being reduced, consumer-reliant economies, everyday consumption and the waste industry continue to produce and demand more waste. Combining a lucid style with robust empirical and theoretical research, this book examines the root causes of the global waste problem, rather than simply the symptoms. It challenges existing waste policies, highlighting what needs to change if we are to get serious in tackling this global problem. It concludes with policy implications for shifting waste from an 'end-of-pipe' concern to being at the heart of the debate over decarbonisation.

Lake Alchichica Limnology - The Uniqueness of a Tropical Maar Lake (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Javier Alcocer Lake Alchichica Limnology - The Uniqueness of a Tropical Maar Lake (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Javier Alcocer
R5,163 Discovery Miles 51 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book provides a comprehensive account of a tropical lake, Alchichica, considering that tropical limnology is by far less known and well-understood than temperate. Many of the well-known temperate limnology paradigms do not apply in tropical limnology, such as the 1C/m thermocline concept, or the role of phosphorous as a limiting nutrient. Lake Alchichica is - most likely - the best limnologically known Mexican lake up to date. Twenty years of continuous monitoring has led us to understand this deep, warm monomictic lake. The peculiar chemical composition of this saline lake - sodium-alkaline with a high concentration in magnesium waters, and groundwater-fed - led to the formation of its unique stromatolite ring that has become world-famous, studied by scientists from various countries. From a biological point of view, this relatively small maar lake displays a comparatively low species richness but surprisingly is plentiful in microendemic species for a recently-formed lake (13,000-6,300 years old, at the Late Pleistocene/Holocene Epoch), eleven of which already described, with more to come. Researchers and students interested in tropical limnology, extreme ecosystems, evolutionary biology, astrobiology, and microbiology will find this book a must-read.

Stream Ecology - Structure and function of running waters (Hardcover, and ed.): J. David Allan Stream Ecology - Structure and function of running waters (Hardcover, and ed.)
J. David Allan
R4,686 Discovery Miles 46 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Running waters are enormously diverse, ranging from torrential mountain brooks, to large lowland rivers, to great river systems whose basins occupy subcontinents. While this diversity makes river ecosystems seem overwhelmingly complex, a central theme of this volume is that the processes acting in running waters are general, although the settings are often unique. The past two decades have seen major advances in our knowledge of the ecology of streams and rivers. New paradigms have emerged, such as the river continuum and nutrient spiraling. Community ecologists have made impressive advances in documenting tte occurrence of species interactions. The importance of physical processes in rivers has attracted increased attention, particularly the areas of hydrology and geomorphology, and the inter-relationships between physical and biological factors have become better understood. And as is true for every area of ecology during the closing years of the twentieth century it has become apparent that the study of streams and rivers cannot be carried out by excluding the role of human activities, nor can we ignore the urgency of the need for conservation. These developments are brought together in Stream Ecology: Structure and function of running waters, designed to serve as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and as a reference book for specialists in stream ecology and related fields.

The text emphasizes supervisory issues which relate to the management of hospitality operations in ways which are sensitive to the impact on the environment. The main areas of environmental management featured are: *water *energy *the indoor environment *materials and waste.

The Biodiversity Gardener - Establishing a Legacy for the Natural World (Hardcover): Paul Sterry The Biodiversity Gardener - Establishing a Legacy for the Natural World (Hardcover)
Paul Sterry
R832 R703 Discovery Miles 7 030 Save R129 (16%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A personal account of—and guide to—unlocking the wildlife potential of gardens and other plots of land in lowland Britain Over the past decade, wildlife author and photographer Paul Sterry has nurtured, both through action and by doing nothing, what has become a small island of flourishing biodiversity in the half-acre garden that surrounds his north Hampshire cottage. By giving nature a free hand, and fostering habitats appropriate to this part of southeast England, he has enabled an abundance of native plant and animal species to call the garden home. This contrasts with the continued decline in biodiversity in the surrounding countryside. In this inspiring and informative book, Sterry tells the story of his own experiences in biodiversity gardening and offers detailed practical advice to anyone who wants to give nature the upper hand on their own bit of land, no matter how small. Hampshire still retains traces of its rich wildlife heritage, but changes in land use over the past half-century have had a devastating impact on local biodiversity. Against this backdrop, The Biodiversity Gardener presents a habitat-driven and evidence-based approach, describing how any gardener can unlock the wildlife potential of their plot and enjoy the satisfaction of watching it become home to a rich array of native species, including butterflies, wildflowers, grasshoppers, amphibians, and fungi. In The Biodiversity Gardener, Sterry explains the ecological imperative of adopting this approach. Collectively, biodiversity gardens could leave a lasting legacy—wildlife oases from which future generations stand a fighting chance of restoring Britain’s natural heritage. The book encourages and empowers readers to create their own biological inheritance for posterity—and shows them how they can do it.

Ecology without Nature - Rethinking Environmental Aesthetics (Paperback): Timothy Morton Ecology without Nature - Rethinking Environmental Aesthetics (Paperback)
Timothy Morton
R740 Discovery Miles 7 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In "Ecology without Nature," Timothy Morton argues that the chief stumbling block to environmental thinking is the image of nature itself. Ecological writers propose a new worldview, but their very zeal to preserve the natural world leads them away from the "nature" they revere. The problem is a symptom of the ecological catastrophe in which we are living. Morton sets out a seeming paradox: to have a properly ecological view, we must relinquish the idea of nature once and for all.

"Ecology without Nature" investigates our ecological assumptions in a way that is provocative and deeply engaging. Ranging widely in eighteenth-century through contemporary philosophy, culture, and history, he explores the value of art in imagining environmental projects for the future. Morton develops a fresh vocabulary for reading "environmentality" in artistic form as well as content, and traces the contexts of ecological constructs through the history of capitalism. From John Clare to John Cage, from Kierkegaard to Kristeva, from "The Lord of the Rings" to electronic life forms, "Ecology without Nature" widens our view of ecological criticism, and deepens our understanding of ecology itself. Instead of trying to use an idea of nature to heal what society has damaged, Morton sets out a radical new form of ecological criticism: "dark ecology."

Global Perspectives on the Ecology of Human-Machine Systems (Hardcover): Jeff Caird, John M. Flach, Peter A. Hancock, Kim J.... Global Perspectives on the Ecology of Human-Machine Systems (Hardcover)
Jeff Caird, John M. Flach, Peter A. Hancock, Kim J. Vicente
R3,157 Discovery Miles 31 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

There is a growing consensus in the human factors/ergonomics community that human factors research has had little impact on significant applied problems. Some have suggested that the problem lies in the fact that much HF/E research has been based on the wrong type of psychology, an information processing view of psychology that is reductionistic and context-free. Ecological psychology offers a viable alternative, presenting a richer view of human behavior that is holistic and contextualized. The papers presented in these two volumes show the conceptual impact that ecological psychology can have on HF/E, as well as presenting a number of specific examples illustrating the ecological approach to human-machine systems. It is the first collection of papers that explicitly draws a connection between these two fields. While work in this area is only just beginning, the evidence available suggests that taking an ecological approach to human factors/ergonomics helps bridge the existing gap between basic research and applied problems.

Geoecology: An Evolutionary Approach (Hardcover): Richard Huggett Geoecology: An Evolutionary Approach (Hardcover)
Richard Huggett
R5,847 Discovery Miles 58 470 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Animals, plants and soils interact with one another. They also interact with the terrestrial sphere--the atmosphere, hydrosphere, toposphere and lithosphere--and with the rest of the cosmos. On land, this rich interaction creates landscape systems or geoecosystems.
"Geoecology" investigates the structure and function of geoecosystems. Part one introduces geoecological systems, their nature, hierarchical structure and ideas about their interdependence and integrity. A simple dynamic systems model, referred to as the "brash" equation, is developed to provide an analytical and conceptual framework for the book. Part two explores internal or "ecological" interactions between geoecosystems and their near-surface environment, with individual chapters looking at the influence of climate, altitude, topography, insularity and substrate. Part three prospects the role of external factors, both geological and cosmic, as agencies disturbing the dynamics of the geoecosystems.
A new "evolutionary" view of geoecological systems, and the animals, plants and soils comprising them, emerges: geoecosystems are seen as dynamic entities, organized on an hierarchical basis, that perpetually respond to changes within themselves and in their surroundings. "Geoecology" will interest a wide range of environmental scientists, geographers, ecologists and pedologists.

Vertebrate Conservation and Biodiversity (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): David L. Hawksworth, Alan T. Bull Vertebrate Conservation and Biodiversity (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
David L. Hawksworth, Alan T. Bull
R5,669 Discovery Miles 56 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together a selection of original studies submitted to Biodiversity and Conservation that address the conservation and biodiversity of vertebrates - particularly those in terrestrial habitats. Vertebrates are, along with plants, the best-known and most intensively studied components of biological diversity on Earth. While studies on vertebrates can be expected to provide models for other groups, they can also pose their own particular problems due to their relative mobility as in some migratory birds. In addition, many mammals & fish are also subject to extensive human exploitation for food or sport. The contributions in this volume are drawn from a wide range of countries - from Australasia, East Africa, Europe, and North, Central and South America. Collectively they provide a snap-shot of the types of studies and actions being taken in vertebrate conservation.

Jurgis Kazimieras Stani'skis, Egle Staniskiene, Zivile Stankeviciute, Asta Daunoriene, Joana Ramanauskaite
R3,641 Discovery Miles 36 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We have entered a new era where business, technologies, communities, and even pandemic deceases cross borders with unprecedented speed and intensity. 2030 Agenda and 17 SDGs reflect the global community's high expectations of finally reversing the destruction of our natural and social habits, and achieving a more balanced and equitable pathways toward well-being of all. However, despite the initial efforts, the world is not on track to achieving the most of the 169 targets that comprise the goals. It is evident that we have a system problem, so we need a system solution. Authors presented a hierarchical system consisting of two-level management systems: first level-unsustainability reduction systems and second level-control system for transformations toward sustainability. The book clearly shows that implementation of systems for unsustainability reduction and for transformations toward sustainability is possible, and that sufficient knowledge is available to get started. It is designed for researchers, practitioners, and politicians.

Resource Management and Contested Territories in East Asia (Hardcover, New): R. Emmers Resource Management and Contested Territories in East Asia (Hardcover, New)
R. Emmers
R1,489 Discovery Miles 14 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ralf Emmers discusses the significance of natural resources as a source of inter-state cooperation and competition in East Asia, assessing whether the joint exploration and development of resources can act as a means to reduce tensions in contested territories. Does the joint management of natural resources in the absence of a negotiated maritime delimitation constitute a feasible strategy to de-escalate maritime sovereignty disputes in East Asia? Can cooperative resource exploitation be separated from nationalist considerations and power politics calculations? Alternatively, should the prospect for joint exploration in disputed waters be expected to raise rather than defuse territorial conflicts, especially if abundant resources are eventually discovered? If this were true, should exploration schemes be postponed until sovereignty disputes have been resolved? Emmers addresses these questions by examining the overlapping sovereignty claims in the Sea of Japan and the East and South China Seas.
