The Academic Enculturation of Chinese Archaeologists - A Study of Disciplinary Texts, Practices and Identities (Hardcover, New... The Academic Enculturation of Chinese Archaeologists - A Study of Disciplinary Texts, Practices and Identities (Hardcover, New edition)
Meng Ge
R1,928 Discovery Miles 19 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the past few decades, sustained and overwhelming research attention has been given to EAL (English as an Additional Language) scholars’ English writing and publishing. While this line of research has shed important light on the scene of global knowledge production and dissemination, it tends to overlook the less Anglicized and more locally bound disciplines located at the academic periphery. This book aimed to fill the gap by examining the academic enculturation experiences of Chinese archaeologists through the lens of their disciplinary writing. Consisting of a situated genre analysis and a multi-case study, the textographic study disclosed the immense complexity of archaeologists’ texts, practices and identities. Important implications were generated for writing researchers and teachers as well as archaeologists and other HSS (the humanities and social sciences) scholars. This book would make a valuable reading for researchers and students of disciplinary/academic writing, second language writing and literacy studies.

Nomads in Archaeology (Paperback, New Ed): Roger Cribb Nomads in Archaeology (Paperback, New Ed)
Roger Cribb
R1,197 Discovery Miles 11 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nomads in Archaeology addresses the problem of how to study mobile peoples using archaeological techniques. It therefore deals not only with the prehistory and archaeology of nomads but also with current issues in theory and methodology, particularly the concept of 'site structure'. This is the first volume to be devoted exclusively to nomad archaeology. It includes sections on the history and origins of pastoral nomad societies, the economics of pastoralism, social organisation of pastoral communities and the 'visibility threshold' of nomad material culture. Examples and case studies are drawn from field work and published sources primarily in Turkey and Iran.

Archaeological Obsidian Studies - Method and Theory (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): M.Steven Shackley Archaeological Obsidian Studies - Method and Theory (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
M.Steven Shackley
R2,797 Discovery Miles 27 970 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume is the third in the Advances in Archaeological and Museum Science series sponsored by the Society for Archaeological Sciences (SAS). The purpose of this series is to provide summaries of advances in various topics in ar chaeometry, archaeological science, environmental archaeology, preservation technology, and museum conservation. The SAS exists to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between archaeologists and colleagues in the natural and physical sciences. SAS mem bers are drawn from many disciplinary fields. However, they all share a common belief that physical science techniques and methods constitute an essential component of contemporary archaeological field and laboratory studies. The series editors wish to thank the reviewers of each of the chapters in this volume for their excellent comments and suggestions. We also wish to thank Chriss jones for her invaluable assistance in the preparation of the texts for submission to the publisher. xi Preface As noted in the introductory chapter, this volume is the second major review of research progress in the study of archaeological obsidian. An earlier book, Advances in Obsidian Glass Studies: Archaeological and Geochemical Perspectives, appeared in 1976. A comparison of the treatment of topics reflected in this earlier work and that contained in this volume not only highlights important advances in the quality and depth of research on archaeological obsidian over more than a quarter of a century but also illustrates more generally some characteristics of developments in the archaeological science field in general."

Field Methods and Post-Excavation Techniques in Late Antique Archaeology (Hardcover): Luke Lavan, Michael Mulryan Field Methods and Post-Excavation Techniques in Late Antique Archaeology (Hardcover)
Luke Lavan, Michael Mulryan
R3,270 Discovery Miles 32 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Archaeologists working on late antique sites have not spent enough time thinking about methodology. Their focus has been on recovering and cataloguing evidence, or on the study of specific historical problems. Digging has often been more important than publishing, which has rarely extended beyond the basic summaries found in preliminary reports. The re-emergence of clearance excavation, fuelled by the demands of tourism, has further reduced the value of urban excavations in the East Mediterranean. Here, late antique levels have suffered, in the hunt for photogenic early imperial architecture. This volume attempts to address this situation by offering a critique of present practice and a series of exemplars, alongside discussion articles on field technique and post-excavation analysis. The articles ranges from urban survey to the study of finds. The book also considers if we need to develop specific field methods appropriate to the study of late antiquity. Contributors are John Bintliff, Jeremy Evans, Axel Gering, Stefan Groh, Yoshiki Hori, Nikolaos D. Karydis, Veli Koese, Luke Lavan, Zsolt Magyar, Philip Mills, John Pearce, Steve Roskams, Helga Sedlmayer, Ellen Swift, Itamar Taxel, Douglas Underwood, Lutgarde Vandeput and Joe Williams.

Colonized Bodies, Worlds Transformed - Toward A Global Bioarchaeology of Contact and Colonialism (Hardcover): Melissa S Murphy,... Colonized Bodies, Worlds Transformed - Toward A Global Bioarchaeology of Contact and Colonialism (Hardcover)
Melissa S Murphy, Haagen D Klaus
R2,912 Discovery Miles 29 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Colonized Bodies, Worlds Transformed represents a new generation of contact and colonialism studies, expanding upon a traditional focus on the health of conquered peoples toward how extraordinary biological and political transformations are incorporated into the human body, reflecting behavior, identity, and adaptation. These globally diverse case studies demonstrate that the effects of conquest reach farther than was ever thought before-to both the colonized and the colonizers. Cultural exchange occurred between both groups, transforming social identities, foodways, and social structures at points of contact and beyond. Contributors to this volume analyze skeletal remains and burial patterns from never-before-studied regions in the Americas to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, resulting in a new synthesis of historical archaeology and bioarchaeology.

Osteobiographies - The Discovery, Interpretation and Repatriation of Human Remains (Paperback): Susan Pfeiffer Osteobiographies - The Discovery, Interpretation and Repatriation of Human Remains (Paperback)
Susan Pfeiffer
R2,647 Discovery Miles 26 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Osteobiographies: The Discovery, Interpretation and Repatriation of Human Remains contextualizes repatriation, or the transfer of authority for human skeletal remains from the perspective of bioarchaelogists and evolutionary biologists. It approaches repatriation from a global perspective, touching upon the most well-known Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) legislation of the United States, while also covering Canada and African countries. The book focuses on the stories behind human skeletons, analyzing their biological factors to determine evolution patterns. Sections present an overview of anatomy, genomics, and stable isotopes from dietary and environmental factors, and how to identify these in skeletal remains. The book then goes on to discuss European-origin, North American, and African paleopathology, ancient DNA links, and cultural issues and implications around repatriation. It concludes with case studies to show how information from archaeologically derived skeletons is vital to understanding human evolution and provide respectful histories behind the remains.

The Intangible Elements of Culture in Ethnoarchaeological Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Stefano Biagetti, Francesca Lugli The Intangible Elements of Culture in Ethnoarchaeological Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Stefano Biagetti, Francesca Lugli
R4,416 Discovery Miles 44 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume focuses on the intangible elements of human cultures, whose relevance in the study of archaeology has often been claimed but rarely practiced. In this book, the authors successfully show how the adoption of ethnoarchaeological perspectives on non-material aspects of cultures can support the development of methodologies aimed at refining the archaeological interpretation of ancient items, technologies, rituals, settlements and even landscape. The volume includes a series of new approaches that can foster the dialogue between archaeology and anthropology in the domain of the intangible knowledge of rural and urban communities. The role of ethnoarchaeology in the study of the intangible heritage is so far largely underexplored, and there is a considerable lack of ethnoarchaeological studies explicitly focused on the less tangible evidence of present and past societies. Fresh case studies will revitalize the theoretical debate around ethnoarchaeology and its applicability in the archaeological and heritage research in the new millennium. Over the past decade, 'intangible' has become a key word in anthropological research and in heritage management. Archaeological theories and methods regarding the explorations of the meaning and the significance of artifacts, resources, and settlement patterns are increasingly focusing on non-material evidence. Due to its peculiar characteristics, ethnoarchaeology can effectively foster the development of the study of the intangible cultural heritage of living societies, and highlight its relevance to the study of those of the past.

Archaeologies of Internment (Hardcover, 2011): Adrian Myers, Gabriel Moshenska Archaeologies of Internment (Hardcover, 2011)
Adrian Myers, Gabriel Moshenska
R1,444 Discovery Miles 14 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The internment of civilian and military prisoners became an increasingly common feature of conflicts in the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. Prison camps, though often hastily constructed and just as quickly destroyed, have left their marks in the archaeological record. Due to both their temporary nature and their often sensitive political contexts, places of internment present a unique challenge to archaeologists and heritage managers. As archaeologists have begun to explore the material remains of internment using a range of methods, these interdisciplinary studies have demonstrated the potential to connect individual memories and historical debates to the fragmentary material remains. Archaeologies of Internment brings together in one volume a range of methodological and theoretical approaches to this developing field. The contributions are geographically and temporally diverse, ranging from Second World War internment in Europe and the USA to prison islands of the Greek Civil War, South African labor camps, and the secret detention centers of the Argentinean Junta and the East German Stasi. These studies have powerful social, cultural, political, and emotive implications, particularly in societies in which historical narratives of oppression and genocide have themselves been suppressed. By repopulating the historical narratives with individuals and grounding them in the material remains, it is hoped that they might become, at least in some cases, archaeologies of liberation.

Latin on Stone - Epigraphic Research and Electronic Archives (Hardcover, New): Francisca Feraudi-Gruenais Latin on Stone - Epigraphic Research and Electronic Archives (Hardcover, New)
Francisca Feraudi-Gruenais; Contributions by Sarolta A. Takacs, Francisca Feraudi-Gruenais, William Stenhouse, Rebecca R Benefiel, …
R3,178 Discovery Miles 31 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Latin on Stone brings together epigraphy scholars on both sides of the Atlantic, highlighting both their research in the field of ancient Latin inscriptions and the electronic technology of which they make use. These interdisciplinary essays reflect a contemporary reality, in which the possibilities and necessities of using modern electronic aids for research on ancient inscriptions can produce very differing results. Databases are an ideal means of making primary sources accessible and allowing scholars to draw well-founded conclusions in a short space of time, but their usefulness depends, of course, on the quality and accuracy of the data entered into them. The trend towards cooperation has been increasingly evident, in Latin epigraphy at least, over the last few years. Alongside these complex synergies, on the rise are interdisciplinary associations based on web-based data transfer. All of the new visions and achievements discussed in the volume can only be fully realized, however, if the traditional roots of epigraphy are maintained. Rather than being blinded by a sort of "electronic madness," scholars must recall the rich heritage of epigraphic transmission as a source of information that has yet to be exhausted. This volume is not only a plea for an increased use of modern (electronic) technology but also a warning against putting trust solely in such technology. It should come as no surprise, given the continuing process of globalization, that the contributors are drawn from both Europe and America. Each scholar is engaged in an attempt not only to scrutinize epigraphic culture afresh, but also to search for common denominators among such a variety of material. Their efforts will increase the diversity of the cross-linking of, and the search possibilities in, the data provided by epigraphic source material. It is a matter of strengthening, increasing, and contextualizing both the epigraphic sources and the data decoded from them.

Language and Classification - Meaning-Making in the Classification and Categorization of Ceramics (Paperback): Allison Burkette Language and Classification - Meaning-Making in the Classification and Categorization of Ceramics (Paperback)
Allison Burkette
R1,581 Discovery Miles 15 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume adopts a practice-based approach to examine the different ways in which classification is communicated and negotiated in different environments within archaeology. The book looks specifically at the archaeological classification of ceramics as a lens through which to examine the discursive and social practices inherent in the classification and categorization process, with perspectives from such areas as corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, linguistic anthropology, and archaeology forming the foundation of the book's theoretical framework. The volume then looks at the process of classification in practice in a variety of settings, including a university course on ceramics classification, an archaeological field school, an intensive petrography course, and archaeometry laboratory at a nuclear research reactor, and highlights participant observation and audiovisual data taken from fieldwork practice completed in these environments. This volume offers a valuable contribution to the growing literature on language and material culture, making this a key resource for students and scholars in sociolinguistic, anthropological linguistics, archaeology, discourse analysis, and anthropology.

Human Remains and Identification - Mass Violence, Genocide, and the 'Forensic Turn' (Hardcover): Elisabeth Anstett,... Human Remains and Identification - Mass Violence, Genocide, and the 'Forensic Turn' (Hardcover)
Elisabeth Anstett, Jean-Marc Dreyfus
R2,472 Discovery Miles 24 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Human remains and identification presents a pioneering investigation into the practices and methodologies used in the search for and exhumation of dead bodies resulting from mass violence. Previously absent from forensic debate, social scientists and historians here confront historical and contemporary exhumations with the application of social context to create an innovative and interdisciplinary dialogue, enlightening the political, social and legal aspects of mass crime and its aftermaths. Through a ground-breaking selection of international case studies, Human remains and identification argues that the emergence of new technologies to facilitate the identification of dead bodies has led to a "forensic turn", normalising exhumations as a method of dealing with human remains en masse. However, are these exhumations always made for legitimate reasons? Multidisciplinary in scope, this book will appeal to readers interested in understanding this crucial phase of mass violence's aftermath, including researchers in history, anthropology, sociology, forensic science, law, politics and modern warfare. The research program leading to this publication has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/2007-2013) / ERC Grant Agreement n Degrees 283-617. -- .

Human Remains and Mass Violence - Methodological Approaches (Hardcover): Jean-Marc Dreyfus, Elisabeth Anstett Human Remains and Mass Violence - Methodological Approaches (Hardcover)
Jean-Marc Dreyfus, Elisabeth Anstett
R2,468 Discovery Miles 24 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book outlines for the first time in a single volume the theoretical and methodological tools for a study of human remains resulting from episodes of mass violence and genocide. Despite the highly innovative and contemporary research into both mass violence and the body, the most significant consequence of conflict - the corpse - remains absent from the scope of existing research. Why have human remains hitherto remained absent from our investigation, and how do historians, anthropologists and legal scholars, including specialists in criminology and political science, confront these difficult issues? By drawing on international case studies including genocides in Rwanda, the Khmer Rouge, Argentina, Russia and the context of post-World War II Europe, this ground-breaking edited collection opens new avenues of research. Multidisciplinary in scope, this volume will appeal to readers interested in an understanding of mass violence's aftermath, including researchers in history, anthropology, sociology, law, politics and modern warfare. The research program leading to this publication has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/2007-2013) / ERC Grant Agreement n Degrees 283-617. -- .

Science in the Study of Ancient Egypt (Paperback): Sonia Zakrzewski, Andrew Shortland, Joanne Rowland Science in the Study of Ancient Egypt (Paperback)
Sonia Zakrzewski, Andrew Shortland, Joanne Rowland
R1,436 Discovery Miles 14 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Science in the Study of Ancient Egypt takes an innovative and integrated approach to the use of scientific techniques and methodologies within the study of ancient Egypt. Accessibly demonstrating how to integrate scientific methodologies into Egyptology broadly, and in Egyptian archaeology in particular, this volume will help to maximise the amount of information that can be obtained within a study of ancient Egypt, be it in the field, museum, or laboratory. Using a range of case studies which exemplify best practice within Egyptian archaeological science, Science in the Study of Ancient Egypt presents both the scientific methods of analysis available and their potential applications to Egyptologists. Although Egyptology has mainly shown a marked lack of engagement with recent archaeological science, the authors illustrate the inclusive but varied nature of the scientific archaeology which is now being undertaken, demonstrating how new analytical techniques can develop greater understanding of Egyptian data.

New Approaches to Spatial Planning and Design - Planning, Design, Applications (Paperback, New edition): Murat OEzyavuz New Approaches to Spatial Planning and Design - Planning, Design, Applications (Paperback, New edition)
Murat OEzyavuz
R1,853 Discovery Miles 18 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the main objectives of planning and design is the reflection of the works to the space. Therefore, the starting point of this book is to reveal the research conducted by different professions in the field of spatial planning and design. For this purpose, original researches on direct application and land were included. Planning and design studies need co-operation between professions in order to fulfill this philosophy. These activities are effective means of fulfilling the philosophy of sustainability. Planning and design is a tool to tell the story of a community, and how it's past, present and future work together for a sustainable tomorrow. The design process in which the most appropriate spatial compositions are revealed by shaping the areas in the direction of planning decisions, develops in the continuation of the planning process. This book is for landscape architects and other planning and design professions. Theoretical foundations, theories, methods, and applications will be essential parts of this reference book. In addition, this book addresses several very different subjects of study; landscape management, biodiversity, landscape restoration, landscape design, urban design, urban planning and architectural design related to theory, practice and the results will be covered.
