A protagonist of the Milanese cultural scene of the 1960s, Italian designer Nanda Vigo (Milan, 1936) began producing her Cronotopi in 1963, in the spirit of ZERO, the transnational group of German, Dutch, French, Belgian, Swiss and Italian artists. Participating in the avant-garde movements and groups of the early sixties, the artist developed her own thoughts on the light, transparency and immateriality that were to constitute her work as well as on the spaces inhabited by human beings. This book showcases the multifaceted activity of Nanda Vigo in the fields of art, architecture and design, analysed by curator Marco Meneguzzo. Text in English and Italian.

Emotionally resonant photographs of everyday life in the Jewish Lodz Ghetto taken during WWII From 1941 to 1944, the Polish Jewish photographer Henryk Ross (1910-91) was a member of an official team documenting the implementation of Nazi policies in the Lodz Ghetto. Covertly, he captured on film scores of both quotidian and intimate moments of Jewish life. In 1944, he buried thousands of negatives in an attempt to save this secret record. After the war, Ross returned to Poland to retrieve them. Although some were destroyed by nature and time, many negatives survived. This compelling volume, originally published in 2015 and now available in paperback, presents a selection of Ross's images along with original prints and other archival material including curfew notices and newspapers. The photographs offer a startling and moving representation of one of humanity's greatest tragedies. Dante (the seventh centenary of whose death is being marked in 2021), the author of one of the greatest works of European literature, has also inspired a wealth of images which, themselves, continue to shape our perceptions of the poet as visionary; of romantic love and political corruption; and of hell and salvation, whether understood in the context of this world or another. At the core of the Comedy and of its related visual images is the emblematic significance of the lives of individual persons. Offering snapshots of mercantile devotion to saints in different regions, this volume is the first to ask explicitly how merchants invoked saints, and why. Despite medieval and modern stereotypes of merchants as godless and avaricious, medieval traders were highly devout - and rightly so. Overseas trade was dangerous, and merchants' commercial activities were seen as jeopardizing their souls. Merchants turned to saints for protection and succor, identifying those most likely to preserve their goods, families, reputations, and souls. The essays in this collection, written from diverse angles, range across later medieval western Europe, from Spain to Italy to England and the Hanseatic League. They offer a multi-disciplinary examination of the ways that medieval merchants, from petty traders to influential overseas wholesalers, deployed the cults of saints. Three primary themes are addressed: danger, community, and the unity of spiritual and cultural capital.
