Contraception - A Casebook from Menarche to Menopause (Paperback, New): Paula Briggs, Gabor Kovacs Contraception - A Casebook from Menarche to Menopause (Paperback, New)
Paula Briggs, Gabor Kovacs; Edited by (consulting) John Guillebaud
R1,364 Discovery Miles 13 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Planned parenthood - and its associated reproductive and sexual healthcare issues - has massive socioeconomic and demographic consequences worldwide. Modern contraception played a major role in the emancipation of women and has huge potential for a sustainable future world population. Yet it is a medical topic which always raises controversy, with serious ethical, religious and cultural overtones. This is an authoritative guide for all those working in reproductive healthcare. Highly practical, evidence-based, with enough detail to inform effective clinical practice, the book is structured on a lifestage approach, mirroring everyday experience of practitioners. All forms of contraceptives are covered in detail, with guidance on prescribing, the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques, and possible complications. The wider field of reproductive healthcare including subfertility and sexual assault are also covered. An ideal guide to contraception for trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology, primary care physicians and nurse-practitioners.

The Business of Birth Control - Contraception and Commerce in Britain Before the Sexual Revolution (Hardcover): Claire L Jones The Business of Birth Control - Contraception and Commerce in Britain Before the Sexual Revolution (Hardcover)
Claire L Jones
R2,719 Discovery Miles 27 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The business of birth control is the first book-length study to examine contraceptives as commodities in Britain before the pill. Drawing on new archives and neglected promotional and commercial material, the book demonstrates how hundreds of companies transformed condoms and rubber and chemical pessaries into consumer goods that became widely available via discreet mail order catalogues, newspapers, birth control clinics, chemists' shops and vending machines in an era when older and more reserved ways of thinking about sex jostled uncomfortably with modern and more open attitudes. The book outlines the impact of contraceptive commodification on consumers, but also demonstrates how closely the contraceptive industry was intertwined with the medical profession and the birth control movement, who sought authority in birth control knowledge at a time when sexual knowledge and who had access to it was contested. -- .

The New Arab Man - Emergent Masculinities, Technologies, and Islam in the Middle East (Paperback, New): Marcia C. Inhorn The New Arab Man - Emergent Masculinities, Technologies, and Islam in the Middle East (Paperback, New)
Marcia C. Inhorn
R1,162 R1,102 Discovery Miles 11 020 Save R60 (5%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Middle Eastern Muslim men have been widely vilified as terrorists, religious zealots, and brutal oppressors of women. "The New Arab Man" challenges these stereotypes with the stories of ordinary Middle Eastern men as they struggle to overcome infertility and childlessness through assisted reproduction.

Drawing on two decades of ethnographic research across the Middle East with hundreds of men from a variety of social and religious backgrounds, Marcia Inhorn shows how the new Arab man is self-consciously rethinking the patriarchal masculinity of his forefathers and unseating received wisdoms. This is especially true in childless Middle Eastern marriages where, contrary to popular belief, infertility is more common among men than women. Inhorn captures the marital, moral, and material commitments of couples undergoing assisted reproduction, revealing how new technologies are transforming their lives and religious sensibilities. And she looks at the changing manhood of husbands who undertake transnational "egg quests"--set against the backdrop of war and economic uncertainty--out of devotion to the infertile wives they love.

Trenchant and emotionally gripping, "The New Arab Man" traces the emergence of new masculinities in the Middle East in the era of biotechnology.

Pregnancy and Power, Revised Edition - A History of Reproductive Politics in the United States (Hardcover): Rickie Solinger Pregnancy and Power, Revised Edition - A History of Reproductive Politics in the United States (Hardcover)
Rickie Solinger
R2,310 R2,119 Discovery Miles 21 190 Save R191 (8%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A sweeping chronicle of women’s battles for reproductive freedom Reproductive politics in the United States has always been about who has the power to decide—lawmakers, the courts, clergy, physicians, or the woman herself. Authorities have rarely put women’s needs and interests at the center of these debates. Instead, they have created reproductive laws and policies to solve a variety of social and political problems, with outcomes that affect the lives of different groups of women differently. Reproductive politics were at play when slaveholders devised “breeding” schemes, when the US government took indigenous children from their families in the nineteenth century, and when doctors pressured Latina women to be sterilized in the 1970s. Tracing the main plot lines of women’s reproductive lives, the leading historian Rickie Solinger redefines the idea of reproductive freedom, putting race and class at the center of the effort to control sex and pregnancy in America over time. Revisiting these issues after more than a decade, this revised edition of Pregnancy and Power reveals how far the reproductive justice movement has come, and the renewed struggles it faces in the present moment. Even after nearly a half-century of “reproductive rights,” a cascade of new laws and policies limits access and prescribes punishments for many people trying to make their own reproductive decisions. In this edition, Solinger traces the contemporary rise of reproductive consumerism and the politics of “free market” health care as economic inequality continues to expand in the US, revealing the profound limits of “choice” and the continued need for the reproductive justice framework.

The choice of the method of contraception is not an easy matter. Failure may arise from using the wrong methods for individual partners. The editors and contributors to this book use the body and mind approach held by doctors who are members of the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine, addressing the emotional and psychological factors in family planning.;The issues addressed include: the unconsicous factors in contraceptive care; care of the younger patient; the man and the method; the sexual needs of people with disability; cultural perceptions and misconceptions; sterilization; and psychosexual problems in the contraceptive consultation. Guidance is given for the family planning consultation based on models.;Doctors, midwives and nurses should find this approach to contraception both rewarding and efficient. The skills required to practice good contraceptive care involve an understanding of sexual feelings and personality. This book aims to provide the framework for the acquisition of skills for the practitioner.

Hormonal contraception has been an available method of birth control for over four decades Despite this, women's knowledge often moves between myth and reality, and never has another medical finding aroused over similar controversial opinions. Misperceptions, previous personal experience, suggestion by poor experience from other women and influence of mass media, sometimes contribute to noncompliance or drop-out of the used hormonal contraceptive method because of the user's rational or irrational anxieties (1). In fact, this flash- information may lead to a clear-cut relationship between negative suggestion and the incidence of emotional refusal(2). Particularly, the mass media continue to show an ambiguous behaviour enhancing the health risks of COCs use with a generic and uncritical manner or emphasising the good effects of the hormonal contraceptives without informing about their risks.

Contraception - A History (Paperback): Jutte Contraception - A History (Paperback)
Jutte
R937 Discovery Miles 9 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Birth control is not an invention of modern times, nor is it a purely personal matter. By the same token, mighty institutions such as church and state have exerted their influence as effectively as that of doctors, population theorists, and the early pioneers of the feminist movement; all of these claim a special expertise in matters of ethics and morality, and so shape the discourse on birth control. The focal point of this engaging new book by renowned historian, Robert J tte, is the Europe of modern times. It also takes in its scope various cultural groups elsewhere in America, China, India and the near East, and world religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam, offering an engaging comparative study of the phenomenon of contraception. Demographic and political aspects of population studies are explored from the early middle ages to the present, as well as the population theories of Malthus. J tte explains how our antecedents dealt with such things and how today's technologies, the condom and coil for example, and our moral perceptions have evolved. In addition to the contraceptives we know and use today, J tte considers other contraceptive practices as diverse as the persecution of witches, the castration of young boys to preserve their voices, the habits of prostitutes and their varied clients and the use of herbs and very peculiar talismans. This comprehensive survey of one of the oldest and most urgent problems of mankind builds up a rich picture of how, over the centuries, all manner of men and women, together and separately, have battled with the needs both for sexual gratification and for limitation of offspring, and also looks beyond to how contraception might evolve in the future. Birth control is not an invention of modern times, nor is it a purely personal matter. By the same token, mighty institutions such as church and state have exerted their influence as effectively as that of doctors, population theorists,

Sweetening the Pill - or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control (Paperback): Holly Grigg-Spall Sweetening the Pill - or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control (Paperback)
Holly Grigg-Spall
R404 Discovery Miles 4 040 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

"Holly Grigg-Spall is fearless, and her courageous advocacy on behalf of women whose stories are too often silenced is a model for others trying to make positive change through health activism. Read the book and get inspired, get angry, and most importantly get information. Sweetening the Pill is exactly the thing needed to energize and mobilize this important women's health conversation." Laura Eldridge, author of In Our Control: The Complete Guide to Contraceptive Choices for Women Millions of healthy women take a powerful medication every day from their mid-teens to menopause - the Pill - but few know how this drug works or the potential side effects. Contrary to cultural myth, the birth-control pill impacts on every organ and function of the body, and yet most women do not even think of it as a drug. Depression, anxiety, paranoia, rage, panic attacks - just a few of the effects of the Pill on half of the over 80% of women who pop these tablets during their lifetimes. When the Pill was released, it was thought that women would not submit to taking a medication each day when they were not sick. Now the Pill is making women sick. However, there are a growing number of women looking for non-hormonal alternatives for preventing pregnancy. In a bid to spark the backlash against hormonal contraceptives, this book asks: Why can't we criticize the Pill?

Morals and Medicine - The Moral Problems of the Patient's Right to Know the Truth, Contraception, Artificial Insemination,... Morals and Medicine - The Moral Problems of the Patient's Right to Know the Truth, Contraception, Artificial Insemination, Sterilization, Euthanasia (Paperback)
Joseph F. Fletcher
R1,223 Discovery Miles 12 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Morals and Medicine a leading Protestant theologian comes to grips with the problems of conscience raised by new advances in medical science and technology. They arise as issues at the start or making of a life, in preserving its health, and in facing its death. They are the problems of Everyman: some are new problems of conscience, such as artificial insemination; some are old problems in new dimensions, such as euthanasia. Modern medicine provides such a high degree of control over health and vital processes that men must inevitably shoulder the burden of intelligent decision, and shoulder it as rationally as possible. Thus far, only Roman Catholic moralists have worked out a coherent ethics of medical care. Morals and Medicine is a new and independent analysis of the morals of life and death, striking out along the line of the values of personality rather than of mere physiological life itself. It offers a modern and at the same time Christian concept of right and wrong for all who are involved: the patient, the doctor and nurse, the pastor, and the family and friends. From Back Alley to the Border - Criminal Abortion in California, 1920-1969 (Hardcover): Alicia Gutierrez-Romine From Back Alley to the Border - Criminal Abortion in California, 1920-1969 (Hardcover)
Alicia Gutierrez-Romine
R1,327 Discovery Miles 13 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In From Back Alley to the Border, Alicia Gutierrez-Romine examines the history of criminal abortion in California and the role abortion providers played in exposing and exploiting the faults in California's anti-abortion statute throughout the twentieth century. Focused on the women who used this underground network and the physicians who facilitated it, Gutierrez-Romine describes the operation of abortion providers from the 1920s through the 1960s, including regular physicians as well as women and African American abortionists, and the investigations and trials that surrounded them. During the 1930s the Pacific Coast Abortion Ring, a large, coast-wide, and comparatively safe organized abortion syndicate, became the target of law enforcement agencies, forcing abortions across the border into Mexico and ushering in an era of Tijuana "abortion tourism" in the early 1950s. The movement south of the border ultimately compelled the California Supreme Court to rule its abortion statute "void for vagueness" in People v. Belous in 1969-four years before Roe v. Wade. Gutierrez-Romine presents the first book focused on abortion on the West Coast and the border between the United States and Mexico and provides a new approach to studying how providers of illegal abortions and their female clients navigated this underground network.

Sexual Chemistry - A History of the Contraceptive Pill (Paperback): Lara V. Marks Sexual Chemistry - A History of the Contraceptive Pill (Paperback)
Lara V. Marks
R783 Discovery Miles 7 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Heralded as the catalyst of the sexual revolution and the solution to global overpopulation, the contraceptive pill was one of the twentieth century's most important inventions. It has not only transformed the lives of millions of women but has also pushed the limits of drug monitoring and regulation across the world. This deeply-researched new history of the oral contraceptive shows how its development and use have raised crucial questions about the relationship between science, medicine, technology, and society.

Lara Marks traces the scientific origins of the pill to Europe and Mexico in the early years of the twentieth century, challenging previous accounts that championed it as a North American product. She explores the reasons why the pill took so long to be developed and explains why it did not prove to be the social panacea envisioned by its inventors. Unacceptable to the Catholic Church, rejected by countries such as India and Japan, too expensive for women in poor countries, it has, more recently, been linked to cardiovascular problems. Reviewing the positive effects of the pill, Marks shows how it has been transformed from a tool for the prevention of conception to a major weapon in the fight against cancer.

San Francisco's Queen of Vice uncovers the story of one of the most skilled, high-priced, and corrupt abortion entrepreneurs in America. Even as Prohibition was the driving force behind organized crime, abortions became the third-largest illegal enterprise as state and federal statutes combined with changing social mores to drive abortionists into hiding. Inez Brown Burns, a notorious socialite and abortionist in San Francisco, made a fortune providing her services to desperate women throughout California. Beginning in the 1920s, Burns oversaw some 150,000 abortions until her trial and conviction brought her downfall. In San Francisco's Queen of Vice, Lisa Riggin tells the story of the rise and fall of San Francisco's "abortion queen" and explores the rivalry between Burns and the city's newly elected district attorney, Edmund G. "Pat" Brown (father of the present governor of California). Pledging to clean up the graft-ridden city, Brown exposed the hidden yet not-so-secret life of backroom deals, political payoffs, and corrupt city cops. Through the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of Burns, Brown used his success as a stepping-stone for his political rise to California's governor's mansion. Featuring an array of larger-than-life characters, Riggin shows how Cold War domestic ideology and the national quest to return to a more traditional America quickly developed into a battle against internal decay. Based on a combination of newspaper accounts, court records, and personal interviews, San Francisco's Queen of Vice reveals how the drama played out in the life and trial of one of the wealthiest women in California history.

The experimental family planning program begun in 1963 in Taichung, the provincial capital of Taiwan, was the largest intensive program of its kind ever to be carried out for a sizable concentrated population. Its use of systematic observation and measurements was also unique. In evaluating the program and the data gathered, the authors seek to establish the extent to which the decline in Taiwan's fertility level resulted from the program rather than from the changes already underway in the society at that time. Here is the full report of the 1970 National Fertility Study, a national sample survey for which thousands of women were interviewed who had been married at some time and were of reproductive age when they were interviewed. The book assesses the growth in the use of the pill and the IUD, the increasing reliance on contraceptive sterilization, and both the intended and the unwanted fertility of American women. The volume opens with an introduction to the survey and its methods. Contraceptive practice in 1970 is then compared with data for 1965, and an analysis is supplied of trends since 1955 in the attitudes of Roman Catholics. Originally published in 1977.

But this is not that future: her marriage has ended, fractured by the stress of five rounds of IVF and two miscarriages. Overwhelmed by grief and disappointment, Ed has relocated to San Francisco and Christina's dream of becoming a mother rests on persuading him to let her go ahead with one final round of IVF, using the last frozen embryo they have stored at the clinic. But when Ed drops a bombshell that threatens to undo everything Christina has strived for, she is forced, once again, to realign her plans: is this the end of her dream, or an opportunity to consider a different - perhaps happier - version of her future?

Evaluates evidence for an increased risk of cancer in women using combined oral contraceptives, progestogen-only hormonal contraceptives, post-menopausal oestrogen therapy, and post-menopausal oestrogen-progestogen therapy. Although the carcinogenicity of these preparations has been extensively investigated, the book stresses the many complex methodological issues that must be considered when interpreting findings and weighing results. Evidence of an association between use of these preparations and positive effects on health, including a reduced risk of some cancers, is also critically assessed. The first and most extensive monograph evaluates evidence of an association between the use of combined oral contraceptives and cancer at nine sites. Concerning breast cancer, the evaluation concludes that, even if the association is causal, the excess risk for breast cancer associated with patterns of use that are typical today is very small. Studies of predominantly high-dose preparations found an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in the absence of hepatitis viruses. Citing these findings, the evaluation concludes that there is sufficient evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of combined oral contraceptives. The evaluation also found sufficient evidence for the carcinogenicity of some, but not all, combined preparations in animals. Combined oral contraceptives were classified as carcinogenic to humans. The evaluation also cites conclusive evidence that these agents have a protective effect against cancers of the ovary and endometrium. Progestogen-only contraceptives are evaluated in the second monograph, which considers the association with cancer at six sites. The evaluation found no evidence of an increased risk for breast cancer. Although the evaluation found sufficient evidence in animals for the carcinogenicity of medroxyprogesterone acetate, evidence for the carcinogenicity of progestogen-only contraceptives in humans was judged inadequate. Progestogen-only contraceptives were classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. The third monograph, on post-menopausal oestrogen therapy, considers evidence of an association with cancer at eight sites. Findings from a large number of epidemiological studies indicate a small increase in the risk of breast cancer in women who have used these preparations for five years or more. Studies consistently show an association between use of post-menopausal oestrogen therapy and an increased risk for endometrial cancer. Data on the association with other cancers were either inconclusive or suggested no effect on risk. The evaluation concludes that post-menopausal oestrogen therapy is carcinogenic to humans. The final monograph evaluates the association between the use of post-menopausal oestrogen-progestogen therapy and cancer at four sites. The evaluation of limited data on breast cancer found an increased relative risk observed with long-term use. Data were judged insufficient to assess the effects of past use and of different progestogen compounds, doses, and treatment schedules. For endometrial cancer, the evaluation found an increase in risk relative to non-users when the progestogen was added to the cycle for 10 days or fewer. Post-menopausal oestrogen-progestogen therapy was classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Concerning post-menopausal therapy in general, the book notes that evidence of carcinogenic risks must be placed in perspective of potential benefits. The prevention of osteoporotic fractures is cited as the best-established benefit. Evidence also suggests that oestrogen prevents heart disease and may prevent memory loss and dementia.
