Race, Gender, and Class in Criminology - The Intersections (Paperback): agan Milovanovic, Martin D. Schwartz Race, Gender, and Class in Criminology - The Intersections (Paperback)
agan Milovanovic, Martin D. Schwartz
R1,272 Discovery Miles 12 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These essays, first published in 1996, focus on class, race, and gender as organising and analytical concepts in criminology. For many years, their importance in studying how the world relates to crime and its control was minimized or ignored. It is clear, however, that these concepts are of critical importance in understanding societal issues, especially crime and societal responses to it. This title will be of interest to students of criminology.

Offending and Desistance - The importance of social relations (Paperback): Beth Weaver Offending and Desistance - The importance of social relations (Paperback)
Beth Weaver
R1,518 Discovery Miles 15 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Offending and Desistance, Beth Weaver examines the role of a co-offending peer group in shaping and influencing offending and desistance, focusing on three phases of their criminal careers: onset, persistence and desistance. While there is consensus across the body of desistance research that social relations have a role to play in variously constraining, enabling and sustaining desistance, no desistance studies have adequately analysed the dynamics or properties of social relations, or their relationship to individuals and social structures. This book aims to reset this balance. By examining the social relations and life stories of six Scottish men (in their forties), Weaver reveals the central role of friendship groups, intimate relationships and families of formation, employment and religious communities. She shows how, for different individuals, these relations triggered reflexive evaluation of their priorities, behaviours and lifestyles, but with differing results. Weaver's re-examination of the relationships between structure, agency, identity and reflexivity in the desistance process ultimately illuminates new directions for research, policy and practice. This book is essential reading for academics and students engaged in the study of criminology and criminal justice, delinquency, probation and criminal law.

Pre-crime - Pre-emption, precaution and the future (Paperback): Jude McCulloch, Dean Wilson Pre-crime - Pre-emption, precaution and the future (Paperback)
Jude McCulloch, Dean Wilson
R1,508 Discovery Miles 15 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pre-crime aims to pre-empt 'would-be-criminals' and predict future crime. Although the term is borrowed from science fiction, the drive to predict and pre-empt crime is a present-day reality. This book critically explores this major twenty-first century development in crime and justice. This first in-depth study of pre-crime defines and describes different types of pre-crime and compares it to traditional post-crime and crime risk approaches. It analyses the rationales that underpin pre-crime as a response to threats, particularly terrorism, and shows how it is spreading to other areas. It also underlines the historical continuities that prefigure the emergence of pre-crime, as well as exploring the new technologies and forms of surveillance that claim the ability to predict crime and identify future criminals. Through the use of examples and case studies it provides insights into how pre-crime generates the crimes it purports to counter, providing compelling evidence of the problems that arise when we act as if we know the future and aim to control it through punishing, disrupting or incapacitating those we predict might commit future crimes. Drawing on literature from criminology, law, international relations, security and globalization studies, this book sets out a coherent framework for the continued study of pre-crime and addresses key issues such as terminology, its links to past practises, its likely future trajectories and its impact on security, crime and justice. It is essential reading for academics and students in security studies, criminology, counter-terrorism, surveillance, policing and law, as well as practitioners and professionals in these fields.

Punishing the Other - The social production of immorality revisited (Paperback): Anna Eriksson Punishing the Other - The social production of immorality revisited (Paperback)
Anna Eriksson
R1,697 Discovery Miles 16 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Punishing the Other draws on the work of Zygmunt Bauman to discuss contemporary discourses and practices of punishment and criminalization. Bringing together some of the most exciting international scholars, both established and emerging, this book engages with Bauman's thesis of the social production of immorality in the context of criminalization and social control and addresses processes of 'othering' through a range of contemporary case studies situated in various cultural, political and social contexts. Topics covered include the increasing bureaucratization of the business of punishment with the corresponding loss of moral and ethical reflection in the public sphere; punitive discourses around border control and immigration; and exclusionary discourses and their consequences concerning 'terrorists' and other socially and culturally defined outsiders. Engaging with national and global issues that are more topical now than ever before, this book is essential reading for academics and students of involved in the study of the sociology of punishment, punishment and modern society, the criminal justice system, philosophy and punishment, and comparative criminology and penology.

Regulating Preventive Justice - Principle, Policy and Paradox (Hardcover): Tamara Tulich, Rebecca Ananian-Welsh, Simon Bronitt,... Regulating Preventive Justice - Principle, Policy and Paradox (Hardcover)
Tamara Tulich, Rebecca Ananian-Welsh, Simon Bronitt, Sarah Murray
R4,701 Discovery Miles 47 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like medicine, law is replete with axioms of prevention. 'Prevention is better than cure' has a long pedigree in both fields. 17th century jurist Sir Edward Coke observed that 'preventing justice excelleth punishing justice'. A century later, Sir William Blackstone similarly stated that 'preventive justice is ...preferable in all respects to punishing justice'. This book evaluates the feasibility and legitimacy of state attempts to regulate prevention. Though prevention may be desirable as a matter of policy, questions are inevitably raised as to its limits and legitimacy, specifically, how society reconciles the desirability of averting risks of future harm with respect for the rule of law, procedural fairness and human rights. While these are not new questions for legal scholars, they have been brought into sharper relief in policy and academic circles in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Over the past 15 years, a body of legal scholarship has tracked the intensified preventive focus of anti-terrorism law and policy, observing how this focus has impacted negatively upon traditional legal frameworks. However, preventive law and policy in other contexts, such as environmental protection, mental health, immigration and corruption has not received sustained focus. This book extends that body of scholarship, through use of case studies from these diverse regulatory settings, in order to examine and critique the principles, policies and paradoxes of preventive justice. "Whereas earlier scholars looked upon preventive justice as a source and means of regulation, the powerfully argued contributions to this volume provide forceful reasons to consider whether we would do better talk about regulating preventive justice." Professor Lucia Zedner, Oxford University

Feminist Theory, Crime, and Social Justice (Hardcover): Alana Van Gundy Feminist Theory, Crime, and Social Justice (Hardcover)
Alana Van Gundy
R5,408 Discovery Miles 54 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Feminist Theory, Crime, and Social Justice offers an insightful look at the primarily masculine-driven perspective on crime and justice through the lens of feminist theory. The book presents the argument that an increased understanding of the female crime typology, life course, and gender-specific programming will improve social justice for offenders. Discussions on the direct implications of the way society views crime and justice contribute to policy recommendations for helping to improve these views, specifically as they relate to female crime.

White-Collar Offenders and Desistance from Crime - Future selves and the constancy of change (Paperback): Ben Hunter White-Collar Offenders and Desistance from Crime - Future selves and the constancy of change (Paperback)
Ben Hunter
R1,575 Discovery Miles 15 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The MPs' expenses scandal in England and Wales and the international banking crisis have both brought into focus a concern about 'elite' individuals and their treatment by criminal justice systems. This interest intersects with a well-established concern within criminology for the transgressions of such offenders. However, up until now there has been little sustained consideration of what happens to such offenders following conviction and little discussion of how they attempt to avoid reoffending in the wake of their punishment. This study rectifies this omission by drawing upon white-collar offenders' own accounts of their punishment and their attempts to make new lives in the aftermath of it. Detailing the impact of imprisonment on white-collar offenders, their release from prison and efforts to be successful again, this book outlines the particular strategies white-collar offenders used to cope with the difficulties they encountered and also analyses the ways they tried to work out 'who they were' in the post-release worlds they found themselves in. Representing the first sustained qualitative study of white-collar offenders and desistance from crime, this book will be of interest to academics and students engaged in the study of white-collar crime, desistance from crime and prison. The insights it offers into a particular group of offenders' experience of criminal justice would also make it useful for criminal justice practitioners and anyone who wishes to understand the challenges faced by a group of offenders who are assumed to have many advantages when it comes to desisting from crime.

On Crimes and Punishments (Paperback, 5th edition): Georg Koopmann On Crimes and Punishments (Paperback, 5th edition)
Georg Koopmann
R1,594 Discovery Miles 15 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cesare Beccaria's influential treatise On Crimes and Punishments is considered a foundational work in the field of criminology. Three major themes of the Enlightenment run through the treatise: the idea that the social contract forms the moral and political basis of the work's reformist zeal; the idea that science supports a dispassionate and reasoned appeal for reforms; and the belief that progress is inextricably bound to science. All three provide the foundation for accepting Beccaria's proposals. It is virtually impossible to ascertain which of several versions of the treatise that appeared during his lifetime best reflected Beccaria's thoughts. His use of many Enlightenment ideas also makes it difficult to interpret what he has written. While Enlightenment thinkers advocated free men and free minds, there was considerable disagreement as to how this might be achieved, except in the most general terms. The editors have based this translation on the 1984 Francioni text, the most exhaustive critical Italian edition of Dei delitti e delle pene. This edition is the last that Beccaria personally oversaw and revised. This translation includes an outstanding opening essay by the editors and is a welcome introduction to Beccaria and the beginnings of criminology. .

Gotham Unbound - How New York City Was Liberated From the Grip of Organized Crime (Paperback, New Ed): James B. Jacobs, Coleen... Gotham Unbound - How New York City Was Liberated From the Grip of Organized Crime (Paperback, New Ed)
James B. Jacobs, Coleen Friel, Robert Raddick
R838 Discovery Miles 8 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Through an investigation of Cosa Nostra's activities, reveals the role of organized crime in the urban power structure Cosa Nostra. Organized crime. The Mob. Call it what you like, no other crime group has infiltrated labor unions and manipulated legitimate industries like Italian organized crime families. One cannot understand the history and political economy of New York City-or most other major American cities-in the 20th century without focusing on the role of organized crime in the urban power structure. Gotham Unbound demonstrates the remarkable range of Cosa Nostra's activities and influence and convincingly argues that 20th century organized crime has been no minor annoyance at the periphery of society but a major force in the core economy, acting as a power broker, even as an alternative government in many sectors of the urban economy. James B. Jacobs presents the first comprehensive account of the ways in which the Cosa Nostra infiltrated key sectors of New York City's legitimate economic life and how this came over the years to be accepted as inevitable, in some cases even beneficial. The first half of Gotham Unbound is devoted to the ways organized crime became entrenched in six economic sectors and institutions of the city-the garment district, Fulton Fish Market, freight at JFK airport, construction, the Jacob Javits Convention Center, and the waste-hauling industry. The second half compellingly documents the campaign to purge the mob from unions, industries, and economic sectors, focusing on the unrelenting law enforcement efforts and the central role of Rudolph Giuliani's mayoral administration in devising innovative regulatory strategies to combat the mob.

Killing the Competition - Economic Inequality and Homicide (Hardcover): Martin Daly Killing the Competition - Economic Inequality and Homicide (Hardcover)
Martin Daly
R4,555 Discovery Miles 45 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Criminologists have known for decades that income inequality is the best predictor of the local homicide rate, but why this is so has eluded them. There is a simple, compelling answer: most homicides are the denouements of competitive interactions between men. Relatively speaking, where desired goods are distributed inequitably and competition for those goods is severe, dangerous tactics of competition are appealing and a high homicide rate is just one of many unfortunate consequences. Killing the Competition is about this relationship between economic inequality and lethal interpersonal violence. Suggesting that economic inequality is a cause of social problems and violence elicits fierce opposition from inequality's beneficiaries. Three main arguments have been presented by those who would acquit inequality of the charges against it: that "absolute" poverty is the real problem and inequality is just an incidental correlate; that "primitive" egalitarian societies have surprisingly high homicide rates, and that inequality and homicide rates do not change in synchrony and are therefore mutually irrelevant. With detailed but accessible data analyses and thorough reviews of relevant research, Martin Daly dispels all three arguments. Killing the Competition applies basic principles of behavioural biology to explain why killers are usually men, not women, and counters the view that attitudes and values prevailing in "cultures of violence" make change impossible.

Become a Problem-Solving Crime Analyst (Hardcover): Ronald Clarke, John E. Eck Become a Problem-Solving Crime Analyst (Hardcover)
Ronald Clarke, John E. Eck
R5,412 Discovery Miles 54 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Crime analysis has become an increasingly important part of policing and crime prevention, and thousands of specialist crime analysts are now employed by police forces worldwide. This is the first book to set out the principles and practice of crime analysis, and is designed to be used both by crime analysts themselves, by those responsible for the training of crime analysts and teaching its principles, and those teaching this subject as part of broader policing and criminal justice courses. The particular focus of this book is on the adoption of a problem solving approach, showing how crime analysis can be used and developed to support a problem oriented policing approach - based on the idea that the police should concentrate on identifying patterns of crime and anticipating crimes rather than just reacting to crimes once they have been committed. In his foreword to this book, Nick Ross, presenter of BBC Crime Watch, argues passionately that crime analysts are 'the new face of policing', and have a crucial part to play in the increasingly sophisticated police response to crime and its approach to crime prevention - 'You are the brains, the expert, the specialist, the boffin.'

Punishment and the History of Political Philosophy - From Classical Republicanism to the Crisis of Modern Criminal Justice... Punishment and the History of Political Philosophy - From Classical Republicanism to the Crisis of Modern Criminal Justice (Hardcover)
Arthur Shuster
R1,028 Discovery Miles 10 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Contemporary philosophy still lacks a satisfying theory of punishment, one that adequately addresses our basic moral concerns. Yet, as the crisis of incarceration in the United States and elsewhere shows, the need for a deeper understanding of punishment's purpose has never been greater. In Punishment and the History of Political Philosophy, Arthur Shuster offers an insightful study of punishment in the works of Plato, Hobbes, Montesquieu, Beccaria, Kant, and Foucault. Through careful interpretation of their key texts, he argues that continuing tensions over retribution's role in punishment reflect the shift in political philosophy from classical republicanism to modern notions of individual natural rights and the social contract. This book will be vital reading for political theorists, philosophers, criminologists, and legal scholars looking for a new perspective on the moral challenges faced by the modern criminal justice system.

Community, Crime Control, and Collective Efficacy - Neighborhoods and Crime in Miami (Hardcover): Craig D. Uchida, Marc L.... Community, Crime Control, and Collective Efficacy - Neighborhoods and Crime in Miami (Hardcover)
Craig D. Uchida, Marc L. Swatt, Shellie E. Solomon, Sean P. Varano
R3,056 Discovery Miles 30 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Collective efficacy is a neighborhood-level concept in which community members create a sense of agency and assume ownership for the state of their local community. This concept is one of several forms of formal and informal social control that predict the overall functioning of a community. In this book, the authors examine collective efficacy and crime in eight Miami-Dade County, Florida neighborhoods, based on data they collected from across the country and in the Miami-Dade neighborhoods themselves. They discuss findings relevant to the theory of collective efficacy itself, ramifications for its use within communities, and make recommendations for future research and for translating these results into actionable, crime prevention activities.

Conservative Criminology - A Call to Restore Balance to the Social Sciences (Hardcover): John Wright, Matt DeLisi Conservative Criminology - A Call to Restore Balance to the Social Sciences (Hardcover)
John Wright, Matt DeLisi
R6,849 Discovery Miles 68 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Conservative Criminology serves as an important counterpoint to virtually every other academic text on crime. Hundreds of books have been written about crime and criminal justice policy from a variety of perspectives, including Marxist, liberal, progressive, feminist, radical, and post-modernist. To date, however, no book has been written outlining a conservative perspective on crime and criminal justice policy. Not a polemic against liberalism, Conservative Criminology nonetheless focuses on how liberal ideology affects the study of crime and criminals and the policies that criminologist advocate. Wright and DeLisi, both senior scholars, give a voice to a major political philosophy-a philosophy often demonized by academics-and to conservatives in the academic world. In the end, Conservative Criminology calls for an investment in intellectual diversity, a respect for varying political philosophies, and a renewed commitment to honesty in scholarship. The authors encourage debate in the profession about the proper role of ideology in the academy and in public policies on crime and justice. Conservative Criminology is for the criminal justice professional and student. It serves as a stimulating supplement to courses in criminology and criminal justice, as well as a primary text for special issues or capstone courses. This book supports the reader in recognizing ideological biases, whatever they might be, and in considering their own convictions.

The Myth of Moral Panics - Sex, Snuff, and Satan (Paperback): Bill Thompson, Andy Williams The Myth of Moral Panics - Sex, Snuff, and Satan (Paperback)
Bill Thompson, Andy Williams
R1,318 Discovery Miles 13 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study provides a comprehensive critique - forensic, historical, and theoretical - of the moral panic paradigm, using empirically grounded ethnographic research to argue that the panic paradigm suffers from fundamental flaws that make it a myth rather than a viable academic perspective.

The Crisis of Campus Sexual Violence - Critical Perspectives on Prevention and Response (Hardcover): Sara Carrigan Wooten,... The Crisis of Campus Sexual Violence - Critical Perspectives on Prevention and Response (Hardcover)
Sara Carrigan Wooten, Roland W. Mitchell
R4,564 Discovery Miles 45 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although awareness of campus sexual assault is at a historic high, institutional responses to incidents of sexual violence remain widely varied. In this volume, a diverse mix of expert contributors provide a critical, nuanced, and timely examination of some of the factors that inhibit effective prevention and response in higher education. Chapter authors take on one of the most troubling aspects of higher education today, bridging theory and practice to offer programmatic interventions and solutions to help institutions address their own competing interests and institutional culture to improve their practices and policies with regard to sexual violence. The Crisis of Campus Sexual Violence provides higher education scholars, administrators, and practitioners with a necessary and more holistic understanding of the challenges that colleges and universities face in implementing adequate and effective sexual assault prevention and response practices.

Young Men and Domestic Abuse (Hardcover): David Gadd, Claire L. Fox, Mary-Louise Corr, Steph Alger, Ian Butler Young Men and Domestic Abuse (Hardcover)
David Gadd, Claire L. Fox, Mary-Louise Corr, Steph Alger, Ian Butler
R4,788 Discovery Miles 47 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Surveys reveal that domestic abuse is more commonplace among teenagers and young adults than older populations, yet surprisingly little is written about young men's involvement in it. Reporting on a three-year study based in the UK, this book explores young men's involvement in domestic abuse, whether as victims, perpetrators or witnesses to violent behaviors between adults. Original survey data, focus group material and in-depth biographical interviews are used to make the case for a more thoroughgoing engagement with the meanings young men come to attribute to violent behavior, include the tendency among many to configure violence within families as "fights" that call for acts of male heroism. The book also highlights the dearth of services interventions for young men prone to domestic abuse, and the challenges of developing responsive practice in this area. Each section of the book highlights further online resources that those looking to conduct research in this area or apply its insights in practice can draw upon.

Preventing Crime - What Works for Children, Offenders, Victims and Places (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Brandon C. Welsh, David P.... Preventing Crime - What Works for Children, Offenders, Victims and Places (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
Brandon C. Welsh, David P. Farrington
R3,116 Discovery Miles 31 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Crime prevention should be rational and should be based on the best possible evidence. Decision-makers should weigh heavily any available evidence on what works best. How can a program that has produced no discernable evidence of effectiveness, as shown through numerous evaluations, be considered for implementation? Unfortunately, this happens all the time. Evidence-based crime prevention attempts to overcome this and other obstacles by ensuring that the best available evidence is considered in any decision to implement a program designed to prevent crime. This book is about evidence-based crime prevention.

A project of the Campbell Collaboration Crime and Justice Group, Preventing Crime brings together the leading scientific evidence on what works best for a wide range of interventions organized around four important domains in criminology: at-risk children, offenders, victims, and places. It is the first book to assess the effectiveness of criminological interventions using the most rigorous review methodology of the systematic review. It is an indispensable guide to the leading scientific evidence on what works best to prevent crime.

Confronting Crime - Crime control policy under new labour (Paperback): Michael Tonry Confronting Crime - Crime control policy under new labour (Paperback)
Michael Tonry
R1,514 Discovery Miles 15 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From Labour's promise to be 'tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime' through to the White Paper and new criminal justice legislation, controlling crime and reforming the criminal justice system has been one of the government's key priorities. This book provides a detailed review of the thinking behind these new plans and legislation, looking at policies and proposals in the field of punishment, particularly those embodied in the Halliday Review of the Sentencing Framework (2001), the government White Paper Justice for All (2002), and the 2002 Criminal Justice Bill. The contributors to the book subject to scrutiny the evidence for the 'evidence-based policy making' that is often claimed as a distinctive new feature to these processes, examining approaches to drug-dependent offenders, dangerous sex offenders, nuisance offenders, procedural and evidential protections in the courts, sentencing guidelines, sentencing management, racism in sentencing, custody plus, custody minus, and reducing the prison population.
