New Voices in Greek Orthodox Thought - Untying the Bond between Nation and Religion (Hardcover, New Ed): Trine Stauning Willert New Voices in Greek Orthodox Thought - Untying the Bond between Nation and Religion (Hardcover, New Ed)
Trine Stauning Willert
R4,440 Discovery Miles 44 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New Voices in Greek Orthodox Thought brings to the light and discusses a strand in contemporary Greek public debate that is often overlooked, namely progressive religious actors of a western orientation. International - and Greek - media tend to focus on the extreme views and to categorise positions in the public debate along well known dichotomies such as traditionalists vs. modernsers. Demonstrating that in late modernity, parallel to rising nationalisms, there is a shift towards religious communities becoming the central axis for cultural organization and progressive thinking, the book presents Greece as a case study based on empirical field data from contemporary theology and religious education, and makes a unique contribution to ongoing debates about the public role of religion in contemporary Europe.

Sacramental Presence after Heidegger - Onto-theology, Sacraments, and the Mother's Smile (Paperback): Conor Sweeney Sacramental Presence after Heidegger - Onto-theology, Sacraments, and the Mother's Smile (Paperback)
Conor Sweeney
R799 Discovery Miles 7 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Theology after Heidegger must take into account history and language as elements in the pursuit of meaning. Quite often, this prompts a hurried flight from metaphysics to an embrace of an absence at the centre of Christian narrativity. Conor Sweeney here explores the 'postmodern' critique of presence in the context of sacramental theology, engaging the thought of Louis-Marie Chauvet and Lieven Boeve. Chauvet is an influential postmodern theologian whose critique of the perceived onto-theological constitution of presence in traditional sacramental theology has made big waves, while Boeve is part of a more recent generation of theologians who even more wholeheartedly embrace postmodern consequences for theology. Sweeney considers the extent to which postmodernism a la Heidegger upsets the hermeneutics of sacramentality, asking whether this requires us to renounce the search for a presence that by definition transcends us. Against both the fetishisation of presence and absence, Sweeney argues that metaphysics has a properly sacramental basis, and that it is only through this reality that the dialectic of presence and absence can be transcended. The case is made for the full but restless signification of the mother's smile as the paradigm for genuine sacramental presence.

Paul's Message and Ministry in Covenant Perspective - Selected Essays (Paperback): Scott J. Hafemann Paul's Message and Ministry in Covenant Perspective - Selected Essays (Paperback)
Scott J. Hafemann
R640 Discovery Miles 6 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Erudite and authoritative, Paul's Message and Ministry in Covenant Perspective is the fruit of twenty-five years of scholarship about the theology and life of the apostle Paul, now made available for the first time to a wider audience. Confronting the questions raised by the history of Pauline thought since F.C. Baur, Scott J. Hafemann's essays focus on how Paul's self-understanding shaped everything, from his message to the driving force behind his ministry, and his consequent call to suffer for the sake of his churches. Hafemann's work reveals that Paul's views of redemption, of his own redemptive mission, and of the life of the redeemed all derived from a central point: his eschatological conviction that the purpose of the new covenant established by Jesus was to prepare the way for when Christ returns on Judgement Day.

The Sovereignty of God Debate (Paperback, New): D. Stephen Long, George Kalantzis The Sovereignty of God Debate (Paperback, New)
D. Stephen Long, George Kalantzis
R911 Discovery Miles 9 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How is God sovereign with respect to creation? Does creation affect God? Does God suffer or change because of creation? If so, how is this related to Christology? Why have these questions been so controversial in evangelical theology, even costing some people their jobs? This book is a collection of lectures given to the Forum for Evangelical Theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Six theologians answer the questions above from a variety of perspectives. They draw on resources including the church fathers, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, Jurgen Moltmann, process theology, and open theism. In the process of answering the question, does God suffer? each theologian also illustrates how responding to this subject requires an examination of other crucial evangelical issues, such as how we read Scripture and what it means to proclaim that God is love. Although the writers answer these questions in a variety of ways, the hope is that engaging in this conversation together can help evangelicals and all Christians to speak more faithfully of our sovereign God.

The Terrible Crystal - Studies in Kierkegaard and Modern Christianity (Paperback): Melville Chaning-Pearce The Terrible Crystal - Studies in Kierkegaard and Modern Christianity (Paperback)
Melville Chaning-Pearce
R665 Discovery Miles 6 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Consisting of studies in Christian thought in relation to catastrophe, this book particularly looks at the ideas of Soren Kierkegaard and Karl Barth. When it was first published in 1940 this important investigation of 'existential reality' presented the view that the climate of crisis and catastrophe is also the essential climate of real religion. It addressed questions of the time surrounding war and religion. Calling for a rebirth of religion, this personal account tries to understand the thinking of Kierkegaard and similar contemporaries and expose their importance in considering the nature of religion.

Literature and Theology as a Grammar of Assent (Hardcover, New Ed): David Jasper Literature and Theology as a Grammar of Assent (Hardcover, New Ed)
David Jasper
R4,598 Discovery Miles 45 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Examining the roots of the relationship between literature and theology, this book offers the first serious attempt to probe the deep theological purposes of the study of literature. Through an exploration of themes of evil, forgiveness, sacrament and what it means to be human, David Jasper draws from international research and discussions on literature and theology and employs an historical and profoundly personal journey through the later part of the last century up to the present time. Combining fields such as bible and literature, poetry and sacrament, this book sheds new light on how Christian theology seeks to remain articulate in our global, secular and multi-faith culture.

Toward Old Testament Ethics (Paperback): Walter C. Kaiser Jr Toward Old Testament Ethics (Paperback)
Walter C. Kaiser Jr
R716 R533 Discovery Miles 5 330 Save R183 (26%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Biblical ethics is a subject that has been almost totally neglected in this century. Only six men have written a major work on Old Testament ethics in the last hundred years, and only two of these works, both written before 1900, are in English. This lack of materials on Old Testament ethics serves to underscore the significance of Walter Kaiser's "Toward Old Testament Ethics".

Dr. Kaiser has no illusions about providing a simple solution to questions of Old Testament ethics. He is familiar with the complexities of this subject and begins his work in Part I by addressing such questions as: How can ethics be defined? Is there an overarching structure to ethics as presented in the Old Testament, or is there only an unrelated series of laws? Do ethics of the Old Testament have any relevance for us today? What are the exegetical principles to be used in a study of Old Testament ethics?

Part II examines the moral texts of the Old Testament, in particular the Decalogue, the book of the covenant (Exodus 20:22-- 23:33), and the law of holiness (Leviticus 18-20). Dr. Kaiser unfolds the intention of these various laws, showing how they relate to each other and form a framework for ethics.

Part II examines the moral texts of the Old Testament, in particular the Decalogue, the book of the covenant (Exodus 20:22- 23:33), and the law of holiness (Leviticus 18- 20). Dr. Kaiser unfolds the intention of these various laws, showing how they relate to each other and form a framework for ethics.

Part III explores the content of Old Testament ethics, namely, how holiness relates to worship, work, relationships, social justice, the sanctity of life, marriage and sex, wealth, use of the truth, and movies for action.

Moral difficulties in the Old Testament present stumbling blocks to many who read these books. How are we to relate to a God who, at times, seems fickle, deceptive, and hateful? How are we to champion the offensive view of women and slaves, the particularism of God choosing Israel, and the imprecations that appear from time to time in the biblical texts? Responses to these and other difficulties form Part IV.

The book concludes with a discussion of Old Testament law and New Testament believers. Dr. Kaiser shows how these laws, written thousands of years ago, still challenge God's people to live holy lives.

Early and Medieval Rituals and Theologies of Baptism - From the New Testament to the Council of Trent (Paperback, New Ed):... Early and Medieval Rituals and Theologies of Baptism - From the New Testament to the Council of Trent (Paperback, New Ed)
Bryan D. Spinks
R1,440 Discovery Miles 14 400 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Presenting a comprehensive survey of the historical underpinnings of baptismal liturgies and theologies, Bryan Spinks presents an ecumenically and geographically wide-ranging survey and discussion of contemporary baptismal rites, practice and reflection, and sacramental theology. Writing within a clear chronological framework, Bryan Spinks presents two simultaneous volumes on Baptismal Liturgy and Theology. In the first volume, Early and Medieval Rituals and Theologies of Baptism, Bryan Spinks summarizes the understandings of baptism in the New Testament and the development of baptismal reflection and liturgical rites throughout Syrian, Egyptian, Roman and African regions. He focuses particularly on the Homilies of Chrysostom, Cyril of Jerusalem, Theodore and Ambrose, the post-nicene rites and commentaries, and the impact of medieval theologies of baptism and Augustinian theology with reference to Western understanding. In the second volume, Reformation and Modern Rituals and Theologies of Baptism, Spinks traces developments through the Reformation, liturgies in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and explores important new ecumenical perspectives on developments of twentiethth-century sacramental discussion.

Jesus and Magic - Freeing the Gospel Stories from Modern Misconceptions (Paperback): Richard A. Horsley Jesus and Magic - Freeing the Gospel Stories from Modern Misconceptions (Paperback)
Richard A. Horsley
R552 Discovery Miles 5 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It has become standard in modern interpretation to say that Jesus performed miracles, and even mainline scholarly interpreters classify Jesus's healings and exorcisms as miracles. Some highly regarded scholars have argued, more provocatively, that the healings and exorcisms were magic, and that Jesus was a magician. As Richard Horsley points out, if we make a critical comparison between modern interpretation of Jesus's healing and exorcism, on the one hand, and the Gospel stories and other ancient texts, on the other hand, it becomes clear that the miracle and magic are modern concepts, products of Enlightenment thinking. 'Jesus and Magic' asserts that Gospel stories do not have the concepts of miracle and magic. What scholars constructed as magic turns out to have been ritual practices such as songs (incantations), medicines (potions), and appeals to higher powers for protection. Horsley offers a critical reading of the healing and exorcism episodes in the Gospel stories. This reading reveals a dynamic relationship between Jesus the healer, the trust of those coming for healing, and their support networks in local communities. Horsley's reading of the Gospel stories gives little or no indication of divine intervention. Rather, the healing and exorcism stories portray healings and exorcisms.

Living without a Why - Mysticism, Pluralism, and the Way of Grace (Paperback): Paul O. Ingram Living without a Why - Mysticism, Pluralism, and the Way of Grace (Paperback)
Paul O. Ingram
R546 Discovery Miles 5 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book Paul O. Ingram adds his voice to a long list of writers seeking to relate Christian tradition to the hard realities of this post-Christian age of religious and secular pluralism. As a Lutheran, Ingram thinks grace flows over this universe like a waterfall. So he brings Christian mystical theology into a discussion of the meaning of grace. Alfred North Whitehead's philosophical vision provides a language that serves as a hermeneutical bridge by which historians of religions can interpret the teachings and practices of religious Ways other than their own without falsification, and by which theologians can appropriate history-of-religions research as a means of helping Christians advance in their own faith journeys. The purpose of the journey of faith is what Whitehead called "creative transformation." The contemporary theological tradition that has most systematically and coherently followed Whitehead's lead in its reflection on non-Christian Ways is process theology, which is perhaps the only liberal or progressive theological movement now active in the twenty-first century.

God and Difference - The Trinity, Sexuality, and the Transformation of Finitude (Hardcover): Linn Marie Tonstad God and Difference - The Trinity, Sexuality, and the Transformation of Finitude (Hardcover)
Linn Marie Tonstad
R4,605 Discovery Miles 46 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

God and Difference interlaces Christian theology with queer and feminist theory for both critical and constructive ends. Linn Marie Tonstad uses queer theory to show certain failures of Christian thinking about God, gender, and sexuality. She employs queer theory to dissect trinitarian discourse and the resonances found in contemporary Christian thought between sexual difference and difference within the trinity. Tonstad critiques a broad swath of prominent Christian theologians who either use queer theory in their work or affirm the validity of same-sex relationships, arguing that their work inadvertently promotes gendered hierarchy. This volume contributes to central debates in Christianity over divine and human personhood, gendered relationality, and the trinity, and provides original accounts of God, sexual difference, and Christian community that are both theologically rich and thoroughly queer.

Soft Shepherd or Almighty Pastor - Power and Pastoral Care (Paperback): Annemie Dillen Soft Shepherd or Almighty Pastor - Power and Pastoral Care (Paperback)
Annemie Dillen
R619 Discovery Miles 6 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 'Soft Shepherd or Almighty Pastor?' contributors seek to go beyond the taboo on "power" within pastoral contexts. They not only discuss fundamental theological and philosophical questions about power but also develop ways to prevent power abuse in pastoral context. Power is considered as omnipresent and is analyzed in its positive and negative aspects. Not only the classical associations of "power over" or "domination" are discussed in relation to ecclesial and pastoral situations, but also forms of power linked to "service" and "care." A sacrificial spirituality might also be dangerous. 'Soft Shepherd or Almighty Pastor?' gathers ten contributions, all of which reflect on the complexity of power issues, also in relation to sexual abuse. The authors argue that dealing adequately with power requires renewed forms of theological thinking, especially about ministry.

The Gospel According to the Blues (Paperback): Gary W. Burnett The Gospel According to the Blues (Paperback)
Gary W. Burnett
R555 Discovery Miles 5 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'The Gospel According to the Blues' dares us to read Jesus's Sermon on the Mount in conversation with Robert Johnson, Son House, and Muddy Waters. It suggests that thinking about the blues - the history, the artists, the songs - provides good stimulation for thinking about the Christian gospel. Both are about a world gone wrong, about injustice, about the human condition, and about hope for a better world. In this book, Gary Burnett probes both the gospel and the history of the blues, to help us understand better the nature of the good news that Jesus preached, and its relevance and challenge to us.

State of Affairs - The Science-Theology Controversy (Paperback): Richard J. Coleman State of Affairs - The Science-Theology Controversy (Paperback)
Richard J. Coleman
R723 Discovery Miles 7 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The last sixty years have witnessed a virtual explosion of interest in how modern science and traditional Christianity intersect. This new rapprochement with science has irrevocably altered how Christians think of God, providing a foundation from which we cannot retreat, but from which we also cannot move forward until we examine the presumptions on which it is based. For the first time, Richard J. Coleman interprets in a clear and meaningful way the themes and practitioners that make this rapprochement different, and what it has achieved. But this book is more than description - it is an inquiry into whether Christian theology has lost its authentic voice by its singular focus on accommodating modern science.

An Uncertain Certainty - Snapshots in a Journey from 'Either-Or' to 'Both-And' in Christian Ministry... An Uncertain Certainty - Snapshots in a Journey from 'Either-Or' to 'Both-And' in Christian Ministry (Paperback)
Graham Buxton
R674 Discovery Miles 6 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Many people in Christian ministry are tired of simplistic certainties; what they need is permission to live with uncertainty, with mystery, ambiguity, and paradox. Because we live in a world that is far removed from the modernist version of reality, with its rational, clinical, and superficial presentation of life, we need the courage and wisdom to embrace the presence of uncertainties in the midst of certainty. In this book, the author offers snapshots of a number of central Christian topics-God, the gospel, the church, salvation, ministry-inviting us to treat them as features of a landscape to explore rather than a set of propositional statements to sign up to. Each chapter-short enough to provoke interest and curiosity-will be a catalyst for deeper reflection and enquiry, inviting us to discover a new freedom in ministry as we embrace a more generous "both-and" perspective in place of a more narrow "either-or" interpretation of the Christian faith. In the process, we may find ourselves rediscovering "the Life we have lost in living" as we imaginatively participate in the life, ministry, and mystery of the triune God of grace in our midst.

Religion at Play - A Manifesto (Paperback): Andre Droogers Religion at Play - A Manifesto (Paperback)
Andre Droogers
R555 Discovery Miles 5 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

- Is a powerful position a guarantee that a religion will continue? - Does God take sides in religious power struggles? - Can God survive religious exclusivity and diversity? - Is God migrating from "out there" to "in here"? - Is religion sustainable in the long run? In seeking answers to these questions, this book explores the possibilities afforded by playful religion. Religion has playful origins, but this aspect is forgotten as soon as institutional power becomes self-serving instead of subservient. Power changes the very essence of religion. Virtually all religions are distorted versions of a playful original. Institutionalization is religion's curse, not its blessing. Apparent success hides the failure of religion to be faithful to its original intent. This book helps find the way back from bordering to inclusivity and openness.

The Narrative of the Good Death - The Evangelical Deathbed in Victorian England (Hardcover, New Ed): Mary Riso The Narrative of the Good Death - The Evangelical Deathbed in Victorian England (Hardcover, New Ed)
Mary Riso
R4,151 Discovery Miles 41 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Christian idea of a good death had its roots in the Middle Ages with ars moriendi, featuring reliance on Jesus as Savior, preparedness for the life to come and for any spiritual battle that might ensue when on the threshold of death, and death not taking place in isolation. Evangelicalism introduced new features to the good death, with its focus on conversion, sanctification and an intimate relationship with Jesus. Scholarship focused on mid-nineteenth-century evangelical Nonconformist beliefs about death and the afterlife is sparse. This book fills the gap, contributing an understanding not only of death but of the history of Methodist and evangelical Nonconformist piety, theology, social background and literary expression in mid-nineteenth-century England. A good death was as central to Methodism as conversion and holiness. Analyzing over 1,200 obituaries, Riso reveals that while the last words of the dying pointed to a timeless experience of hope in the life to come, the obituaries reflect changing attitudes towards death and the afterlife among nineteenth-century evangelical Nonconformist observers who looked increasingly to earthly existence for the fulfillment of hopes. Exploring tensions in Nonconformist allegiance to both worldly and spiritual matters, this book offers an invaluable contribution to death studies, Methodism, and Evangelical theology.

Invocations: v. 1 - Calling on the God in All (Paperback): Richard Skinner Invocations: v. 1 - Calling on the God in All (Paperback)
Richard Skinner
R220 Discovery Miles 2 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From earthworms to CD-ROMs, from starfish to blizzards, from electrons to garden forks, from doubt to a shout of laughter ... In the tradition of liturgical chants such as the `Advent Antiphons', Richard Skinner has created invocations inspired by creatures, conditions and objects in the world around us which reflect and are a metaphor for aspects of God or the Divine. Although the author comes from a Christian background and is most at home with the iconography and language of Christianity, these invocations, which incorporate symbolism from creation, science, technology and human psychology, and point to the God in all things, will resonate with individuals and groups of any or no particular religious or spiritual allegiance. Richard Skinner is a writer, performer, comedian and counsellor. His previous publications include Echoes of Eckhart, published by Arthur James in association with Jim Cotter's Cairns Publications and The Logic of Whistling (Cairns, 2002). A cradle Baptist, he is now heavily involved in the life of a city-centre Anglican church, where considerable lay participation occurs. He is deeply influenced by the medieval mystics, particularly Meister Eckhart and Julian of Norwich.

The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox - An Interpretation and Refinement of the Theological Apologetic of... The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox - An Interpretation and Refinement of the Theological Apologetic of Cornelius Van Til (Paperback)
B A Bosserman
R725 Discovery Miles 7 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox' grapples with the question of how one may hold together the ideals of systematic theology, apologetic proof, and theological paradox by building on the insights of Cornelius Van Til. Van Til developed an apologetic where one presupposes that the Triune God exists, and then proves this Christian presupposition by demonstrating that philosophies that deny it are self-defeating in the specific sense that they rely on principles that only the Trinity, as the ultimate harmony of unity and diversity, can furnish. A question raised by Van Til's trademark procedure is how he can evade the charge that the apparent contradictions of the christian faith render it equally self-defeating as non-Christian alternatives. This text argues that for Van Til, Christian paradoxes can be differentiated from genuine contradictions by the way that their apparently opposing elements discernibly require one another, even as they present our minds with an irresolvable conflict. And yet, Van Til failed to sufficiently vindicate the central Christian paradox-the doctrine of the Trinity-along the lines required by his system. Hence, the present text offers a unique proof that God can only exist as the pinnacle of unity-in-diversity, and as the ground of a coherent Christian system, if He exists as three, and only three, divine persons.
