The Bhagavata Purana is one of the most important, central and
popular scriptures of Hinduism. A medieval Sanskrit text, its
influence as a religious book has been comparable only to that of
the great Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Ithamar
Theodor here offers the first analysis for twenty years of the
Bhagavata Purana (often called the Fifth Veda ) and its different
layers of meaning. He addresses its lyrical meditations on the
activities of Krishna (avatar of Lord Vishnu), the central place it
affords to the doctrine of bhakti (religious devotion) and its
treatment of older Vedic traditions of knowledge. At the same time

and African social and economic actors that have been increasing

Using Amish Mafia as a window into the interplay between the real
and the imagined, this book dissects the peculiar appeals and
potential dangers of deception in reality TV and popular
entertainment. When Amish Mafia was released in 2012, viewers were
fascinated by the stories of this secret group of Amish and
Mennonite enforcers who used threats, extortion, and violence to
keep members of the Amish community in line-and to line their own
pockets. While some of the stories were based loosely on actual
events, the group itself was a complete fabrication. Its members
were played by ex-Amish and ex-Mennonite young adults acting out
scenarios concocted by the show's producers. What is most
extraordinary about Amish Mafia is that, even though it was
fictional, it was cleverly constructed to appear real. Discovery
Channel, which aired it, assiduously maintained that it was real;
whole episodes were devoted to proving that it was real; and many
viewers (including smart reality TV fans) were fooled into
believing it was real. In Fooling with the Amish, Dirk Eitzen
examines the fakery in Amish Mafia and how actual viewers of the
show responded to it to discover answers to two questions that have
long puzzled media scholars: What is it about the so-called reality
of reality shows that appeals to and gratifies viewers? How and why
are people taken in by falsehoods in the media? Eitzen's ultimate
answer to these questions is that, in taking liberties with facts,
Amish Mafia works very much like gossip. This helps to explain the
workings not just of this and other reality TV shows but also of
other forms of media fakery, including fake news. The book winds

T. Barnum's famous "humbugs" of the nineteenth century to recent TV
news scandals. It examines the social and emotional appeals of

This is the first book-length study of Delta Cooperative Farm
(1936-42) and its descendant, Providence Farm (1938-56). The two
intentional communities drew on internationalist practices of
cooperative communalism and pragmatically challenged Jim Crow
segregation and plantation labor. In the winter of 1936, two dozen
black and white ex-sharecropping families settled on some two
thousand acres in the rural Mississippi Delta, one of the most
insular and oppressive regions in the nation. Thus began a
twenty-year experiment - across two communities - in
interracialism, Christian socialism, cooperative farming, and civil
and economic activism. Robert Hunt Ferguson recalls the genesis of
Delta and Providence: how they were modeled after cooperative farms
in Japan and Soviet Russia and how they rose in reaction to the
exploitation of small- scale, dispossessed farmers. Although the
staff, volunteers, and residents were very much everyday people - a
mix of Christian socialists, political leftists, union organizers,
and sharecroppers - the farms had the backing of such leading
figures as philanthropist Sherwood Eddy, who purchased the land,
and educator Charles Spurgeon Johnson and theologian Reinhold
Niebuhr, who served as trustees. On these farms, residents
developed a cooperative economy, operated a desegregated health
clinic, held interracial church services and labor union meetings,
and managed a credit union. Ferguson tells how a variety of factors
related to World War II forced the closing of Delta, while
Providence finally succumbed to economic boycotts and outside
threats from white racists. Remaking the Rural South shows how a
small group of committed people challenged hegemonic social and
economic structures by going about their daily routines. Far from
living in a closed society, activists at Delta and Providence
engaged in a local movement with national and international roots
and consequences.
How political realities are formed when the government ceases to be
a guarantor of rights and democracy Neocitizenship explores how the
constellation of political and economic forces of neoliberalism
have assailed and arguably dismantled the institutions of modern
democratic governance in the U.S. As overtly oligarchical
structures of governance replace the operations of representative
democracy, the book addresses the implications of this crisis for
the practices and imaginaries of citizenship through the lens of
popular culture. Rather than impugn the abject citizen-subject who
embraces her degraded condition, Eva Cherniavsky asks what new or
hybrid forms of civic agency emerge as popular sovereignty recedes.

appearance of Gothic in fashion, advertising and television,

accounts of Gothic culture have overlooked this celebratory strain

examines how secondhand goods sold at thrift stores, flea markets,
and garage sales came to be both profitable and culturally
influential. Initially, selling used goods in the United States was
seen as a questionable enterprise focused largely on the poor. But
as the twentieth century progressed, multimillion-dollar businesses
like Goodwill Industries developed, catering not only to the needy
but increasingly to well-off customers looking to make a statement.
Le Zotte traces the origins and meanings of ""secondhand style""
and explores how buying pre-owned goods went from a signifier of
poverty to a declaration of rebellion. Considering buyers and
sellers from across the political and economic spectrum, Le Zotte
shows how conservative and progressive social activists--from
religious and business leaders to anti-Vietnam protesters and drag
queens--shrewdly used the exchange of secondhand goods for economic
and political ends. At the same time, artists and performers, from
Marcel Duchamp and Fanny Brice to Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain, all
helped make secondhand style a visual marker for youth in revolt.
The life-like depiction of the body became a central interest and
defining characteristic of the European Early Modern period that
coincided with the establishment of which images of the body were
to be considered 'decent' and representable, and which disapproved,
censored, or prohibited. Simultaneously, artists and the public
became increasingly interested in the depiction of specific body
parts or excretions. This book explores the concept of indecency
and its relation to the human body across drawings, prints,
paintings, sculptures, and texts. The ten essays investigate
questions raised by such objects about practices and social norms
regarding the body, and they look at the particular function of
those artworks within this discourse. The heterogeneous media,
genres, and historical contexts north and south of the Alps studied
by the authors demonstrate how the alleged indecency clashed with
artistic intentions and challenges traditional paradigms of the
historiography of Early Modern visual culture.

milks is not as stable as one might initially assume, even if one

production in Croatia in a range of different social settings: on

During the 1976 Bicentennial celebration, millions of Americans
engaged with the past in brand-new ways. They became absorbed by
historical miniseries like Roots, visited museums with new exhibits
that immersed them in the past, propelled works of historical
fiction onto the bestseller list, and participated in living
history events across the nation. While many of these activities
were sparked by the Bicentennial, M. J. Rymsza-Pawlowska shows
that, in fact, they were symptomatic of a fundamental shift in
Americans' relationship to history during the 1960s and 1970s. For
