The Divergent Nation of Indonesia - Heterogeneous Imaginings in Jakarta, Kupang, and Banda Aceh (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020):... The Divergent Nation of Indonesia - Heterogeneous Imaginings in Jakarta, Kupang, and Banda Aceh (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Stefani Nugroho
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how Indonesia is imagined differently by young people in the three cities of Jakarta, Kupang and Banda Aceh. Throughout the course of Indonesia's colonial and postcolonial history, Jakarta, the capital, has always occupied a central position, while Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara and Banda Aceh in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam are located at the peripheries. The book analyses the convergences and divergences in how the country is perceived from these different vantage points, and the implications for Indonesia, also providing a new perspective to the classic and contemporary theories of the nation. By examining the heterogeneity of the imaginings of the nation 'from below', it moves away from the tendency to focus on the homogeneity of the nation, found in the classic theories such as Anderson's and Gellner's, as well as in more recent theories on every day and banal nationalism. Using the tenets of standpoint theory and Laclau and Mouffe's theory of hegemony, the nation is acknowledged as an empty signifier that means different things depending on the positionality of the perceiving subject. The work appeals to scholars of nation studies and Asian and Indonesian studies, as well those interested in the empirical grounding of poststructuralist theories.

Poverty Dynamics - Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Hardcover, New): Tony Addison, David Hulme, Ravi Kanbur Poverty Dynamics - Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Hardcover, New)
Tony Addison, David Hulme, Ravi Kanbur
R4,961 Discovery Miles 49 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This collection of essays provides a state-of-the-art examination of the concepts and methods that can be used to understand poverty dynamics. It does this from an interdisciplinary perspective and includes the work of anthropologists, economists, sociologists, and political scientists. The contributions included highlight the need to conceptualise poverty from a multidimensional perspective and promote Q-Squared research approaches, or those that combine quantitative and qualitative research.
The first part of the book provides a review of the research on poverty dynamics in developing countries. Part Two focuses on poverty measurement and assessment, and discusses the most recent work of world-leading poverty analysts. The third part focuses on frameworks for understanding poverty analysis that avoid measurement and instead utilize approaches based on social relations and structural analysis.
There is widespread consensus that poverty analysis should focus on poverty dynamics and this book shows how this idea can practically be taken forward.

Economic Liberalization, Democratization and Civil Society in the Developing World (Hardcover): R. Bensabat-Kleinberg, J. Clark Economic Liberalization, Democratization and Civil Society in the Developing World (Hardcover)
R. Bensabat-Kleinberg, J. Clark
R3,046 Discovery Miles 30 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This 12-country comparative volume examines the impact of economic structural adjustment programmes on grassroots civil associations and the implications for political liberalization and democratization in the developing countries of Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The authors look at the impact of economic reform upon women's groups, human rights organizations, social welfare non-governmental organizations, unions and business associations. They challenge the assumption that economic reform will automatically lead to greater democratization.

Pathways from Preferential Trade - The Politics of Trade Adjustment in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific (Hardcover): Theron Pathways from Preferential Trade - The Politics of Trade Adjustment in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific (Hardcover)
Theron
R2,018 R1,913 Discovery Miles 19 130 Save R105 (5%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

While the liberalization of trade has entailed adjustment costs for both large and small developing countries and LDCs, preference erosion is particularly onerous for small states. Tony Heron investigates the political and economic consequences and, more particularly, policy responses to the erosion of non-reciprocal preferences caused by the liberalization of trade. Although preference erosion is nothing new, what is striking at the current juncture is the degree to which preference erosion is now dominated by a policy consensus that sees the process as not only unavoidable but also desirable. He seeks not such much to challenge this viewpoint as to explore its political implications by looking at the actual experience of individual countries and regions making the transition from preferential to reciprocal free trade.

Alternative Discourses on Modernization and Development - East Asian Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Kim Kyong-Dong Alternative Discourses on Modernization and Development - East Asian Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Kim Kyong-Dong
R3,269 Discovery Miles 32 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This cutting edge work offers an alternative perspective on existing paradigms of modernization and development that originated in the West from the vantage point of non-western, late-modernizing societies. It considers how East Asian philosophical ideas enrich the reformulation of the concept of development or societal development, and how influential principles of traditional culture such as yin-yang dialectic interact with modern ideas and technology. It addresses the significance of alternative discourses as culturally independent scholarship, and the problems of pervasive mechanisms of social, political, economic, and cultural dependence in the global academic world.

Today, a large number of scholars studying development understand this process as involving learning and capability building. Capability building is an active, not a passive, process. It requires a purposeful effort from the learner's side, with support and commitment on allocation of time and resources toward learning activities. This process implies the possibility of failure as well as success, as we also learn from failures. A global cast of academics and policy makers examines economic development as a process of learning and technological accumulation, showing how economic development is a process involving creative destruction. While markets and market competition play major roles in structuring the development process, non-market institutions and government policies matter.

Promoting Development - The Political Economy of East Asian Foreign Aid (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Barbara Stallings, Eun Mee... Promoting Development - The Political Economy of East Asian Foreign Aid (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Barbara Stallings, Eun Mee Kim
R4,664 Discovery Miles 46 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book offers a new approach to studying foreign aid in the 21st century. While most analysts focus on the differences between traditional and emerging donors, Stallings and Kim here argue that a more important distinction is between East Asian donors and their western counterparts. Asian donors - Japan, South Korea, and China - cross the traditional and emerging divide and demonstrate a particular approach to development that draws on their own dramatic success. As East Asia continues its upward trajectory of economic development, the politics of aid can reveal surprising truths about the objectives and mechanisms of soft power and diplomacy in creating new networks in the region. This book will be of interest to NGO workers, scholars, and students of international relations, a critical part of research into Asia's rise and the emerging spheres of influence.

Borderless Africa - A Sceptic's Guide to the Continental Free Trade Area (Paperback): Francis Mangeni, Andrew Mold Borderless Africa - A Sceptic's Guide to the Continental Free Trade Area (Paperback)
Francis Mangeni, Andrew Mold
R636 Discovery Miles 6 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The African Continental Free Trade Area, established in 2018, represented a monumental step forward for Africa in terms of meeting longstanding aspirations for greater economic and political integration. But it has nonetheless been met with scepticism in some quarters, both within the continent and beyond. 'Borderless Africa' makes the case for the AfCFTA in an accessible and compelling way, without shying away from technical and academic debates. Francis Mangeni and Andrew Mold take us on a journey through the different dimensions and implications of the AfCFTA, the largest free-trade zone in the world, starting with its underlying economic rationale. Pointing to the numerous historical examples of successful regional integration, they argue that the African continent will need to take on board such lessons as the agreement is implemented. They discuss, too, the more controversial elements of the AfCFTA, including the freedom of movement protocol, contending that this should not be seen as an optional extra, but as an intrinsic part of the accord. Also exploring the role of external partners in the construction of an economically stronger, more united Africa, this fascinating study reveals how the AfCFTA is contributing to sustainable development across the continent.

Understanding Food Insecurity - Key Features, Indicators, and Response Design (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Maria Sassi Understanding Food Insecurity - Key Features, Indicators, and Response Design (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Maria Sassi
R3,507 Discovery Miles 35 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides a comprehensive overview of key aspects of food insecurity, including definitional and conceptual issues, information systems and data sources, indicators, and policies. The aim is to equip readers with a sound understanding of the subject that will assist in the recognition of food insecurity and the design of suitable responses. The early chapters discuss the evolution and limitations of the concept and provide a set of conceptual frameworks for the analysis of food security. Systems used to collect data and their evolution over time are then explained, and the most commonly adopted indicators for monitoring food security are presented. Approaches to food security are then thoroughly reviewed decade by decade. Specific attention is paid to the food insecurity challenge in the new millennium, focusing particularly on recent food crises and institutional and policy-related consequences. Finally, the specific terminology of food aid and assistance is examined, with discussion of the instruments recently adopted in the food aid system. This book will be an informative and stimulating resource for both students and professionals.

Greig Charnock; Guido Starosta; Edited by Guido Starosta
R4,291 Discovery Miles 42 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book revisits the debate over the new international division of labour (NIDL) that dominated discussions in international political economy and development studies until the early 1990s. It submits that a revised NIDL thesis can shed light on the specificities of capitalist development in various parts of the world today. Taken together, the contributions amount to a novel value-theoretical approach to understanding the NIDL. This rests upon the distinction between the global economic content that determines the constitution and dynamics of the NIDL and the evolving national political forms that mediate its development. More specifically, the authors argue that uneven development is an expression of the underlying essential unity of the production of relative surplus-value on a world scale. They substantiate and illustrate this argument through several international case studies, including Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Ireland, South Korea, Spain and Venezuela.

Politics of the Dispossessed - Superpowers and Developments in the Middle East (Hardcover): Hafizullah Emadi Politics of the Dispossessed - Superpowers and Developments in the Middle East (Hardcover)
Hafizullah Emadi
R2,336 Discovery Miles 23 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of state-society development in the most volatile region of the world. In the Middle East, various anti-systemic movement and radical Islam often clashed and resisted the political, cultural, economic, and military domination of the region by the world's major imperial powers. Emadi investigates state, revolution, and development in the Middle Eastern states of Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria in the immediate post-World War II period. Maintaining that the state is an instrument of class domination, exhibiting a certain degree of autonomy in the creation and design of domestic development programs, he details the role of class in an attempt to provide a better understanding of the diverse factors at work. Politics of the Dispossessed provides an alternative analysis of development in regional politics and its context in world politics, aspects that are generally neglected by most mainstream studies. It examines state formation, internal development strategies, and how class conflict and ideology led to class alliance on an international basis, as well as the external interference in the internal affairs of these societies. It also explores the process of political and ethnic integration of the Middle East into the global economic system and the resulting counter-strategies of the nationalist and Islamic resistance to the increasing superpower domination of the international system.

Aid, Growth and Poverty (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Jonathan Glennie, Andy Sumner Aid, Growth and Poverty (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Jonathan Glennie, Andy Sumner
R1,559 Discovery Miles 15 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors discuss the impact of foreign aid and tackle the question of why assessing the impact of aid is so difficult. The authors focus on peer-reviewed, cross-country studies published over the last decade and draw together some global-level assessments, considering the context and conditions under which aid might be said to 'work'. Glennie and Sumner argue that the evidence in four areas shows signs of convergence that may have direct relevance for policy decisions on aid and for aid effectiveness discussions. These are as follows: Aid levels (meaning if aid is too low or too high); Domestic political institutions (including political stability and extent of decentralisation); Aid composition (including sectors, modalities, objectives and time horizons); and Aid volatility and fragmentation. Notably, this study finds that there is no consensus that the effectiveness of aid depends on orthodox economic policies.

R6,557 Discovery Miles 65 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The role of social capital in regional development is a multifaceted topic which is studied all over the world using various methods and across numerous disciplines. This book is the first to offer an overview of this rapidly expanding field of research and to thoroughly analyze the complex issue of social capital and regional development. The authoritative and original chapters, written by leading scholars from around the world, combine theory and new empirical research to analyze various types of regions from metropolitan to rural. A particular focus is on entrepreneurship and the social capital of enterprises, whilst the role of social capital for modern governance and planning is also highlighted. The State of Social Progress of Islamic Societies - Social, Economic, Political, and Ideological Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed.... The State of Social Progress of Islamic Societies - Social, Economic, Political, and Ideological Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Habib Tiliouine, Richard J. Estes
R8,941 Discovery Miles 89 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook addresses the historical background of the Islamic world and reviews its basic past intellectual achievements. It studies social progress of these regions and sub-regions in comparison with other parts of the world. It uses large data sets and well established statistically weighted Indexes in order to assess the nature and pace of the multiple facets of social change in member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The handbook extensively discusses the main challenges confronting the Islamic nations in the social, economic, political, and ideological fields. Though it is recognizable that social change in the Islamic World is generally positive, it remains highly variable in pace and there is room to speed it up to the benefit of millions of deprived Muslim people. Hence, the book studies the different propositions and programs of action, such as the United Nations' Millennium Development Campaign and the OIC's Ten-Year Programme of Action to present an integrated and comprehensive agenda of action to help improve the situation in the Islamic World.

The Global Political Economy of the Household in Asia (Hardcover): J. Elias, S. Gunawardana The Global Political Economy of the Household in Asia (Hardcover)
J. Elias, S. Gunawardana
R2,018 Discovery Miles 20 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The household has traditionally been neglected in studies of Asian political economy. While there is an emergent literature that looks at this relationship, to date, it is fragmented. The contributors consider how the household economy has increasingly been incorporated into development planning and policy making within both states and multilateral development agencies. They examine the social consequences of the tendency to view households as marketizable spaces, and explore how the household economy relates to broader structures of industrial production in the region. With case studies on Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and China, they provide a comprehensive picture of the centrality of the household economy to ongoing processes and struggles associated with the continuous economic transformation of the region.

Collectively, the chapters in this volume look at the demographic facts and their interpretations, and beyond these facts to theories about consumption, technological development, and collective behaviour. Of particular concern throughout are the issues of poverty and the implications for the health and welfare of the poor people whose very lives are at stake in the global discussion about population growth and environment.
