In 1952, when American college teachers John and Mildred Adams with their two small children sailed past the Statue of Liberty on their way to Egypt and a new, unpredictable life, they were trembling with excitement. At last, a chance to see the world Something of that thrill persisted through their eight eventful years in the Middle East: in Egypt, Iraq, and Lebanon. Those years in the Middle East were a brief period of relative stability, prosperity, and friendliness toward the West, just before the whole area was violently torn apart by wars and terrorism. In that almost Golden Age, traditional patterns of culture-manners, customs, political and social institutions, loyalties, taboos, ideals, ethical standards, religious beliefs-were clearer than they can be in a time of crisis and disruption like ours. This book's story of the Adams family's life in that Middle East of half a century ago is dramatically timely today. Many Americans are sick of the apparently endless violence and terrorism in the Middle and Near East and in other places (including the United States) where Islamic cultures clash with non-Islamic ones-conflict in most of which the United States is deeply involved. "How did we get into this mess?" they ask, "and how will it end?" Historians point to the ignorance of Americans, including our leaders, about the Middle and Near East and Islam and to the disastrous consequences of that ignorance. They tell us that stability and peace will never come to those conflicted areas unless that ignorance is replaced by understanding, respect, and good will. Sharing in the Adams family's story the reader can gain that valuable insight and consequently, perhaps, sympathy and goodwill for all the people involved.

"Reflections on Biography" is intended for all readers of biography--lifelong or occasional, critical or casual--and is written by an award-winning biographer, Paula R. Backscheider. The author examines biography from many angles and gives a tour of the decisions biographers make and some of the implications of those choices. Its aim is to increase the pleasure of reading biographies, to add new, enjoyable dimensions even as it increases readers' insights into the art of writing them. The book concludes with observations about the form's future directions and challenges. In this second edition, Backscheider provides a new Introduction that describes innovative forms of biography and new theoretical directions.
Family genealogy is something that recently became an interest for me. I knew very about our family roots and when I made a visit to our local genealogy society to research my Grandmother Ballard's family, Maybelle Thompson Ballard, the volunteers working were able to help me find information and steer me into other avenues of research. My findings are included in this book as are the genealogy of my wife, the Maybins. It would be a monumental task to include a complete genealogical overview in a book of this nature so I have only limited my findings to those of my immediate family. As a writer of short stories pertaining to my own life experiences I am including some of my writings.

Let it be made clear at the very outset of this Preface that the pages which follow do not pretend to be a history of piracy, but are simply an attempt to gather together, from various sources, particulars of those redoubtable pirates and buccaneers whose names have been handed down to us in a desultory way. I do not deal here with the children of fancy; I believe that every man, or woman too-since certain of the gentler sex cut no small figure at the game-mentioned in this volume actually existed. A time has come when every form of learning, however preposterous it may seem, is made as unlaborious as possible for the would-be student. Knowledge, which is after all but a string of facts, is being arranged, sorted, distilled, and set down in compact form, ready for rapid assimilation. There is little fear that the student who may wish in the future to become master of any subject will have to delve into the original sources in his search after facts and dates. Surely pirates, taking them in their broadest sense, are as much entitled to a biographical dictionary of their own as are clergymen, race-horses, or artists in ferro-concrete, who all, I am assured, have their own "Who's Who"?
This is a story about one man's struggle to overcome class discrimination, poverty, and abandonment in order to achieve success, wholeness, and recognition. It does not always make light reading, but as with anything in life, there are humorous elements. A mixture of narrative storytelling and academic investigation provides the necessary balance for discussing a difficult subject. From earliest childhood memories, the reader is taken through the commotion of school life and ultimately beyond into the world of work. There is a gradual reversal of roles, as the ideas applied to the writer in his youth are turned outwards upon his entourage, and subsequently, the rest of society. One need not always agree; but hopefully the book will provide at the very least food for thought, and demonstrate the limitations of any idea when taken to the extreme.
Like many people with Tourette syndrome, Troye Evers' symptoms began early in his childhood, but he was not officially diagnosed until he was eighteen years old. He remained in the closet about his diagnosis until his thirties, falsely attempting to pass off his symptoms as the result of bad sleep or a dry throat. After deciding he had enough, he penned a screenplay about his experiences that went on to win third place in the All Access Screen Writing competition. Two years later, he found himself voted on to the board of the Tourette Syndrome Association of New York City. Now using his influence and writing skills, he has collected the stories of seventeen other people, from all walks of life, living with Tourette syndrome. This breakthrough book will dispel several pernicious myths about the disorder. Contrary to media stereotypes about the disease, the vast majority of those with Tourette syndrome do not yell out profanities and other inappropriate remarks. Only ten percent of sufferers are prone to episodes of coprolalia, the yelling of obscenities. Instead, the neuropsychiatric disorder is marked by a combination of motor tics, such as uncontrollable arm waving, neck twitching, shoulder rolling, and speech tics. In these stories, each person reveals how the disorder has transformed their life for both good and bad. "From talking about daily bullying, teasing, mocking, and their fight for acceptance, they open up to the reader, explain how they conquered the fear of honesty, and became strong, confident members of society with a beautiful message," writes Evers. This book is not intended as a medical reference but as an education tool that allows readers to glimpse the lives of others affected by Tourette syndrome. As few others understand the reality of their condition, many spend their whole lives suppressing their symptoms and suppress their own personalities in the process. Incisive and eye-opening, this book makes their realities come alive.

Set against the background of what was then the world most cosmopolitan city; "Memories of Alexandria" tell the story of a Spanish-Egyptian family, from the years immediately after the Spanish Civil War to Egypt's decades of revolution, unrest and conflict between the late forties and the mid-sixties. The story line runs in incessantly back and forth, embracing, like lively journey, past resent and future, portraying historical accounts and people from all walks of life with a philosophical and cynical approach to the scheming and false values of our time - and the uselessness of it all. It is also the story of the "uprooted", those Egyptian khawagat foreigners) who after revolution and wars, were forced out of the country by unforeseen and tragic circumstances. The writing is sincere, cynical, ironic, candid, spicy, harsh, bold and desperate. In nutshell, "Memories of Alexandria - From a void to nothingness" - is a surrealistic philosophical story of bygone times. Ricardo Wahby Tapia is now retired after forty years of business, mainly in the tourist industry. He lives in Madrid and Cabezon de la Sal (Cantabria). |
