Sraffa and the Reconstruction of Economic Theory: Volume Two - Aggregate Demand, Policy Analysis and Growth (Hardcover): E.... Sraffa and the Reconstruction of Economic Theory: Volume Two - Aggregate Demand, Policy Analysis and Growth (Hardcover)
E. Levrero, A. Palumbo, A. Stirati
R3,551 Discovery Miles 35 510 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Piero Sraffa's "Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities," the papers selected and contained in "Sraffa and the Reconstruction of Economic Theory" account for the work completed around the two central aspects of his contribution to economic analysis, namely the criticism of the neoclassical (or marginalist) theory of value and distribution, and the reconstruction of economic theory along the lines of the Classical approach. Divided into three volumes, "Sraffa and the Reconstruction of Economic Theory" debates the most fruitful routes for advancement in this field and their implications for applied and policy analysis.
This second volume focuses on the theory of output and growth as developed in the modern classical approach on the basis of the extension to the long run of the Keynesian principle of effective demand, and on the implications of the revival of the classical approach for policy analysis and for understanding the evolution of the international economic order in the last few decades.

Kalecki and Unemployment Equilibrium (Hardcover): M. Sebastiani Kalecki and Unemployment Equilibrium (Hardcover)
M. Sebastiani
R4,344 Discovery Miles 43 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Kalecki's opus has been acknowledged chiefly as a contribution to the theory of distribution and the business cycle. Little attention has been given to the theory of effective demand and to unemployment equilibrium, i.e. to the field traditionally covered by Keynesian economics. This book is an attempt to draw attention to the most innovative core of Kalecki's thought on capitalist economies, which is also strictly interrelated to the history of economic thought. Accordingly, it focuses on the relationships with other theoretical approaches, to methodology and the theory of effective demand and investment, to the theory of distribution and prices, and to the theory of money.

The Corporate Financiers - Williams, Modigliani, Miller, Coase, Williamson, Alchian, Demsetz, Jensen, Meckling (Hardcover): C.... The Corporate Financiers - Williams, Modigliani, Miller, Coase, Williamson, Alchian, Demsetz, Jensen, Meckling (Hardcover)
C. Read
R3,490 Discovery Miles 34 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Corporate Financiers is the fifth book in a series of discussions about the great minds in the history and theory of finance. While the series addresses the contributions of scholars in our understanding of modern finance, this volume presents the ways in which a corporation creates value. More than two centuries ago, Adam Smith explained the concept of division of labor and the efficiencies of specialization as the mechanism in which a firm creates value. However, corporations now find themselves outsourcing some processes to other firms as an alternative way to create value. There must be other economic forces at work than simply the internal efficiencies of a firm. We begin by describing the work of a rather obscure scholar named John Burr Williams who demonstrated in 1938 how the earnings of a firm are capitalized into corporate value through its stock price. We then delve into the inner workings of the modern corporation by describing the contributions of Nobel Memorial Prize winners Ronald Coase and Oliver Williamson. More than any others, these scholars created a renewed appreciation for our understanding of the institutional detail of the modern corporation in reducing costs and increasing efficiency. While Coase and Williamson provided meaningful descriptions of the advantage of a corporation, they did not offer prescriptions for the avenues the corporation can create more value in an era when new technologies make outsourcing and telecommuting increasingly possible. Michael Jensen and William Meckling describe in greater detail the nature of the implicit contracts a corporation employs, and recommend remedies to various problems that arise when the goals of the corporation are not aligned with the incentives of its agents. We also describe the further nuances to these relationships as offered by Armen Alchian and Harold Demsetz. We treat the lives of these extraordinary individuals who looked at a very familiar problem in a sufficiently novel light to change the way all look at corporations ever since. That is the test of genius.

Tackling Inequality (Hardcover): R. Layard Tackling Inequality (Hardcover)
R. Layard
R4,496 Discovery Miles 44 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Richard Layard is one of Britain's foremost applied economists, whose work has had a profound impact on the policy debate in Britain and abroad. This book contains his most influential articles on education, equality and income distribution and on the lessons of economic transition in Eastern Europe. It is published along with a companion volume. Inequality argues that lifetime inequality is the basic inequality we should worry about. In this context education is a powerful instrument of redistribution, as well as a national investment. Cash redistribution has efficiency costs which can be calculated, but it may also serve to discourage inefficient over-work arising from each person's efforts to earn more than his neighbour. A final series of essays is based on Layard's recent work on reform strategies in Russia and Poland. The book opens with Richard Layard's personal credo 'Why I became an economist'.

The Unbalanced Economy - A Policy Appraisal (Hardcover): Ciaran Driver, Paul Temple The Unbalanced Economy - A Policy Appraisal (Hardcover)
Ciaran Driver, Paul Temple
R2,862 Discovery Miles 28 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

During the 1980s Britain became one of the world's most market-oriented economies, an approach which resulted in three severe recessions and a deepening degree of inequality. This book argues that a rebalancing of the economy will remain elusive until proactive policies are implemented at the corporate and industrial level.

Post Keynesian Economics - Debt, Distribution and the Macro Economy (Hardcover): T. Palley Post Keynesian Economics - Debt, Distribution and the Macro Economy (Hardcover)
T. Palley
R2,877 Discovery Miles 28 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work provides a statement of post-Keynesian macroeconomic theory, focusing on the significance of privately created inside debts and income distribution for the determination of economic activity. It highlights the coherence of post-Keynesian macroeconomics, and analyzes its distinctive differences from conventional macroeconomic theory.

Status, Growth and the Environment - Goods as Symbols in Applied Welfare Economics (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Kjell Arne... Status, Growth and the Environment - Goods as Symbols in Applied Welfare Economics (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Kjell Arne Brekke, Richard B. Howarth
R3,028 Discovery Miles 30 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Applied welfare economics proceeds from the assumption that preferences are fixed and independent of social context. Social psychologists and anthropologists, in contrast, interpret preferences as being strongly shaped by culture and the prevailing social norms. This viewpoint is supported by a wealth of evidence from ethnographies, social surveys, and experimental studies. Integrating theory and evidence from a range of social sciences, the authors argue that the satisfaction derived from material goods depends upon their symbolic meaning, as people use goods to reinforce a positive social identity. They further contend that this calls for the incorporation of status preferences in economic models. The book finds that concerns over social status may lead decision makers to significantly overvalue consumption and undervalue the natural environment. In addition, income and consumption taxes that are normally regarded as 'distortionary' may be necessary to address the social costs of status signalling. Based on the available evidence, the authors argue that failing to account for status preferences can lead to flawed policy prescriptions in debates over optimal taxation, the economics of climate change and Environmental Kuznets Curves. To address this bias, the book offers a tractable, operational, and theoretically grounded approach to the economics of social status. Students and scholars of ecological, environmental and resource economics will find Status, Growth and the Environment to be a highly original and fascinating read. It will also be of great relevance to anyone with an interest in applied welfare economics.

Robin Maialeh
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Symmetry and Economic Invariance (Hardcover, 2nd enhanced ed. 2014): Ryuzo Sato, Rama V. Ramachandran Symmetry and Economic Invariance (Hardcover, 2nd enhanced ed. 2014)
Ryuzo Sato, Rama V. Ramachandran
R3,600 Discovery Miles 36 000 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Symmetry and Economic Invariance (second enhanced edition) explores how the symmetry and invariance of economic models can provide insights into their properties. Although the professional economist of today is adept at many of the mathematical techniques used in static and dynamic optimization models, group theory is still not among his or her repertoire of tools. The authors aim to show that group theoretic methods form a natural extension of the techniques commonly used in economics and that they can be easily mastered. Part I provides an introduction that minimizes prerequisites including prior knowledge of group theory. Part II discusses recent developments in the field.

Confessions Of An Economic Hit Man (Paperback, 3rd Edition): John Perkins Confessions Of An Economic Hit Man (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
John Perkins
R604 R523 Discovery Miles 5 230 Save R81 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do we stop the unrelenting evolution of the economic hit man strategy and China’s takeover?

The riveting third edition of this New York Times bestseller blows the whistle on China’s economic hit man (EHM) strategy, exposes corruption on an international scale, and offers much-needed solutions for curing the degenerative Death Economy.

In this shocking exposé, former EHM John Perkins gives an insider view into the corrupt system that cheats and strong-arms countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars and ultimately causes staggering income inequality and ecological devastation.

EHMs are highly paid professionals who use development loans to saddle countries with huge debts and force them to serve US interests. Now, a new EHM wave is infecting the world, and at the peak of the devastation sits China, a newly dominant economic power, with its own insidious version of the US EHM blueprint. Twelve explosive new chapters detail the allure, exploitation, and wreckage of China’s EHM strategy in Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

If allowed to continue its rampage, the EHM strategy—whether executed by the United States or China—will destroy life as we know it. However, all is not lost. Perkins offers a plan for transforming this system that places profits above all into a Life Economy that restores the earth. He inspires readers to take actions toward a new era of global cooperation that will end the United States’s and China’s EHM strategies for good.

The Value Dimension (Routledge Revivals) - Marx versus Ricardo and Sraffa (Hardcover): Ben Fine The Value Dimension (Routledge Revivals) - Marx versus Ricardo and Sraffa (Hardcover)
Ben Fine
R4,630 Discovery Miles 46 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The essays in this edited collection, first published in 1986, focus on important debates surrounding the central Marxian problem of the transformation of values into prices. The collection brings together major contributions on the value theory debate from the decade prior to the book's publication, and assesses the debate's significance for wider issues. Value theory emerges as much more than a technical relation between labour time and prices, and the structure of the capitalist economy is scrutinised. This is a relevant and comprehensive work, valuable to students, academics and professionals with an interest in political and Marxist economy.

Valpy Fitzgerald
R4,348 Discovery Miles 43 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides vital theoretical underpinnings for the emerging 'neo-structuralist' reading of macroeconomics based on the heterogeneous accumulation behaviour of public and private sectors. Production Frontiers (Hardcover): Rolf Fare, Shawna Grosskopf, C.A. Knox Lovell Production Frontiers (Hardcover)
Rolf Fare, Shawna Grosskopf, C.A. Knox Lovell
R3,123 Discovery Miles 31 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents a mathematical programming approach to the analysis of production frontiers and efficiency measurement. The authors construct a variety of production frontiers, and by measuring distances to them are able to develop a model of efficient producer behaviour and a taxonomy of possible types of departure from efficiency in various environments. Linear programming is used as an analytical and computational technique in order to accomplish this. The approach developed is then applied to modelling producer behaviour. By focusing on the empirical relevance of production frontiers and distances to them, and applying linear programming techniques to artificial data to illustrate the type of information they can generate, this book provides a unique study in applied production analysis. It will be of interest to scholars and students of economics and operations research, and analysts in business and government.

Economic and Environmental Risk and Uncertainty - New Models and Methods (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Robert Nau, Erik Gronn, Mark J.... Economic and Environmental Risk and Uncertainty - New Models and Methods (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Robert Nau, Erik Gronn, Mark J. Machina, Olvar Bergland
R3,034 Discovery Miles 30 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 1980s and 1990s have been a period of exciting new developments in the modelling of decision-making under risk and uncertainty. Extensions of the theory of expected utility and alternative theories of non-expected utility' have been devised to explain many puzzles and paradoxes of individual and collective choice behaviour. This volume presents some of the best recent work on the modelling of risk and uncertainty, with applications to problems in environmental policy, public health, economics and finance. Eighteen papers by distinguished economists, management scientists, and statisticians shed new light on phenomena such as the Allais and St. Petersburg paradoxes, the equity premium puzzle, the demand for insurance, the valuation of public health and safety, and environmental goods. Audience: This work will be of interest to economists, management scientists, risk and policy analysts, and others who study risky decision-making in economic and environmental contexts.

The Impact of Organizational Ethical Climate on Organizational Commitment and Job Performance - An Economic Ethics Analysis of Japanese-funded Manufacturing Enterprises in China (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Keikoh Ryu
R1,533 Discovery Miles 15 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study seeks to evaluate the impact of organizational ethical climate on the organizational commitment and job performance of Japanese-funded manufacturing enterprises (JFMEs) in China using empirical analysis and discussion, and includes a review of related research into economic ethics as well as a quantitative analysis of the various types of organizational ethical climates typically found in JFMEs operating in China. While prior studies have approached the topic from an ethical, psychological, philosophical and/or sociological perspective, none have specifically analyzed organizational ethical climate and its effect on organizational commitment and job performance under these conditions. Nor has an analysis of the relationship between organizational ethical climate, organizational commitment, and job performance ever been approached from the perspective of economic ethics. This study illustrates the feasibility of researching organizational ethics from an economic perspective, while laying out a theoretical basis for exploring the philosophy of economics from the perspective of economic ethics.

Marxism and the Global Financial Crisis (Paperback): Hillel Ticktin Marxism and the Global Financial Crisis (Paperback)
Hillel Ticktin
R1,488 Discovery Miles 14 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The book discusses the nature of Marxist theory of crisis and applies it to the global financial crisis which began in 2007. Is the contemporary crisis simply the usual periodic upturn and downturn or is there something more fundamental? Is there a structural crisis of capitalism, from which there is no immediate solution? Is capitalism managed and does it have a strategy? Is the financial crisis representative of a failure in capitalism itself to subject banks and other financial institutions to the overall economy? The book discusses Marx's view on crises, as well as ideas on money and finance. It considers the different modern Marxist ideas on the causes of crises - falling rate of profit, disproportionality and underconsumption. It goes into detail as to the nature of the present crisis, its course and causes in a spirited and independent manner. Apart from the United States, it considers the situation in the two countries, in which protests erupted: Iran and Greece. They are taken as examples of the effect of the crisis on the country, the society and the economy as well as its politics. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critique.

Capital - Volumes One and Two (Paperback): Karl Marx Capital - Volumes One and Two (Paperback)
Karl Marx; Series edited by Tom Griffith; Introduction by Mark G. Spencer
R201 R179 Discovery Miles 1 790 Save R22 (11%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Few writers have had a more demonstrable impact on the development of the modern world than has Karl Marx (1818-1883). Born in Trier into a middle-class Jewish family in 1818, by the time of his death in London in 1883, Marx claimed a growing international reputation. Of central importance then and later was his book Das Kapital, or, as it is known to English readers, simply Capital. Volume One of Capital was published in Paris in 1867. This was the only volume published during Marx's lifetime and the only to have come directly from his pen. Volume Two, published in 1884, was based on notes Marx left, but written by his friend and collaborator, Friedrich Engels (1820-1895). Readers from the nineteenth century to the present have been captivated by the unmistakable power and urgency of this classic of world literature. Marx's critique of the capitalist system is rife with big themes: his theory of 'surplus value', his discussion of the exploitation of the working class, and his forecast of class conflict on a grand scale. Marx wrote with purpose. As he famously put it, 'Philosophers have previously tried to explain the world, our task is to change it.'
