R1,276 R1,142 Discovery Miles 11 420 Save R134 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Discover a structured, applied approach to behavioral finance with the first academic text of its kind--Ackert/Deaves' BEHAVIORAL FINANCE: PSYCHOLOGY, DECISION MAKING, AND MARKETS. This comprehensive text--ideal for today's behavioral finance elective--links finance theory and practice to human behavior. The book begins by building upon the established, conventional principles of finance before moving into psychological principles of behavioral finance, including heuristics and biases, overconfidence, emotion and social forces. Readers learn how human behavior influences the decisions of individual investors and professional finance practitioners, managers, and markets. The book clearly explains what behavioral finance indicates about observed market outcomes as well as how psychological biases potentially impact the behavior of managers. Readers see, first-hand, the implications of behavioral finance on retirement, pensions, education, debiasing, and client management. This book spends a significant amount of time examining how behavioral finance can be used by practitioners today. Readers utilize theory and applications in every chapter with a wide variety of end-of-chapter exercises, discussion questions, simulations and experiments that reinforce the book's applied approach.

Performance auditing can play a vital role in ensuring that taxpayers' money is spent economically, efficiently and effectively. Yet because it is difficult to explain its complexities to newcomers in the field in a way that makes sense the first time round, and because no two audits are identical, there is little practical guidance on the topic available in South Africa at present. Performance auditing: a step-by-step approach fills this gap. Performance auditing: A step-by-step approach focuses, step-by-step, on those elements that are relevant to all performance audits and can be applied easily and successfully. The second edition includes, among other things, a new section on strategic planning, additional illustrations of planning working papers on efficiency and economy, and updated terminology in line with that used in publications by the Presidency and the National Treasury of the Republic of South Africa. The numerous practical examples and case studies in the book make it ideal for hands-on use as a training guide. Performance auditing is aimed at practitioners, trainers and students in auditing.

Advanced Credit Risk - Analysis And Management (Hardcover): C Joseph Advanced Credit Risk - Analysis And Management (Hardcover)
C Joseph 2
R1,822 Discovery Miles 18 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Credit is essential in the modern world and creates wealth, provided it is used wisely. The Global Credit Crisis during 2008/2009 has shown that sound understanding of underlying credit risk is crucial. If credit freezes, almost every activity in the economy is affected. The best way to utilize credit and get results is to understand credit risk. Advanced Credit Risk Analysis and Management helps the reader to understand the various nuances of credit risk. It discusses various techniques to measure, analyze and manage credit risk for both lenders and borrowers. The book begins by defining what credit is and its advantages and disadvantages, the causes of credit risk, a brief historical overview of credit risk analysis and the strategic importance of credit risk in institutions that rely on claims or debtors. The book then details various techniques to study the entity level credit risks, including portfolio level credit risks. Authored by a credit expert with two decades of experience in corporate finance and corporate credit risk, the book discusses the macroeconomic, industry and financial analysis for the study of credit risk. It covers credit risk grading and explains concepts including PD, EAD and LGD. It also highlights the distinction with equity risks and touches on credit risk pricing and the importance of credit risk in Basel Accords I, II and III. The two most common credit risks, project finance credit risk and working capital credit risk, are covered in detail with illustrations. The role of diversification and credit derivatives in credit portfolio management is considered. It also reflects on how the credit crisis develops in an economy by referring to the bubble formation. The book links with the 2008/2009 credit crisis and carries out an interesting discussion on how the credit crisis may have been avoided by following the fundamentals or principles of credit risk analysis and management. The book is essential for both lenders and borrowers. Containing case studies adapted from real life examples and exercises, this important text is practical, topical and challenging. It is useful for a wide spectrum of academics and practitioners in credit risk and anyone interested in commercial and corporate credit and related products.

The goal of investment management is to achieve the investor's required rate of return by putting assets to their most productive use. The return should compensate the investor for the time during which the funds are committed, the expected rate of inflation and the uncertainty of the future financial benefits expected from the investment. Investment management is a concise, yet comprehensive introduction to investment analysis and portfolio management, specifically in South Africa. Investment management focuses on investment in financial assets such as shares and bonds, and explains fundamental and technical analysis. It investigates portfolio management and how derivative instruments such as futures, options and swaps may be used for this purpose. In addition, a chapter is devoted to the foreign exchange market and its management. The book provides a comprehensive framework and a thorough network of guidelines, with self-assessment questions at the end of each chapter. It is written with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA(R)) Level I learning outcomes for investment analysis and portfolio management in mind. Investment management aims to prepare undergraduate investment management students for postgraduate study.

The role of a financial manager is to maintain a firm's liquidity and solvency by providing the cash flows necessary to satisfy its obligations and acquiring and financing the current and fixed assets needed to achieve its goals. However, the management of a firm's assets is not exclusively in the hands of a financial manager. Other functional departments, especially purchasing and marketing, play a significant role.

Finance For Non-Financial Managers thus provides an understanding of the principles of financial management as required to contribute favourably to the long-term success of a firm. Finance for non-financial managers explains the financial goals of a firm and illustrates how the principles of finance should be applied in creating wealth as opposed to simply maximising profit. With its ideal for anyone who has little or no prior knowledge of accounting or financial management.

In particular, Finance For Non-Financial Managers deals with the following:

  • the long-term goal of creating value and the short-term goals of profitability and liquidity;
  • analysing and interpreting financial statements;
  • using a financial calculator;
  • managing cash flow (liquidity), accounts receivable and inventory (stock).

Finance For Non-Financial Managers is aimed at managers involved in marketing, human resources, information technology and supply chain management, and for professionals such as engineers, architects, attorneys and medical professionals in private practice.

Accounting For Managers - Interpreting Accounting Information for Decision Making 5e (Paperback, 5th Edition): PM Collier Accounting For Managers - Interpreting Accounting Information for Decision Making 5e (Paperback, 5th Edition)
PM Collier
R1,609 Discovery Miles 16 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This revised and updated fifth edition of Accounting for Managers builds on the international success of the previous editions in explaining how accounting is used by non-financial managers. Emphasizing the interpretation rather than the construction of accounting information, Accounting for Managers encourages a critical, rather than an unthinking acceptance of accounting techniques. Whilst immensely valuable for planning, decision-making and control, users of accounting information need to recognize the assumptions behind, and the limitations of particular accounting techniques. As in the previous editions, the book links theory with practical examples and case studies drawn from real business situations across a wide range of manufacturing, retail and service industries.

KHS Pickett
R4,294 Discovery Miles 42 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first edition of "The Internal Auditing Handbook" received wide acclaim from readers and became established as one of the definitive publications on internal auditing. The second edition was released soon after to reflect the rapid progress of the internal audit profession. There have been a number of significant changes in the practice of internal auditing since publication of the second edition and this revised third edition reflects those changes. The third edition of "The Internal Auditing Handbook" retains all the detailed material that formed the basis of the second edition and has been updated to reflect the Institute of Internal Auditor's (IIA) International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing. Each chapter has a section on new developments to reflect changes that have occurred over the last few years. The key role of auditors in reviewing corporate governance and risk management is discussed in conjunction with the elevation of the status of the chief audit executive and heightened expectations from boards and audit committees. Another new feature is a series of multi-choice questions that have been developed and included at the end of each chapter.

This edition of "The Internal Auditing Handbook" will prove to be an indispensable reference for both new and experienced auditors, as well as business managers, members of audit committees, control and compliance teams, and all those who may have an interest in promoting corporate governance.

Introduction to Mathematical Finance - Discrete Time Models (Hardcover): Stanley R. Pliska Introduction to Mathematical Finance - Discrete Time Models (Hardcover)
Stanley R. Pliska
R1,323 Discovery Miles 13 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is designed to serve as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students who seek a rigorous yet accessible introduction to the modern financial theory of security markets. This is a subject that is taught in both business schools and mathematical science departments. The full theory of security markets requires knowledge of continuous time stochastic process models, measure theory, mathematical economics, and similar prerequisites which are generally not learned before the advanced graduate level. Hence a proper study of the full theory of security markets requires several years of graduate study. However, by restricting attention to discrete time models of security prices it is possible to acquire mathematics. In particular, while living in a discrete time world it is possible to learn virtually all of the important financial concepts. The purpose of this book is to provide such an introductory study.

There is still a lot of mathematics in this book. The reader should be comfortable with calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory that is based on calculus, (but not necessarily measure theory). Random variables and expected values will be playing important roles. The book will develop important notions concerning discrete time stochastic processes; prior knowledge here will be useful but is not required. Presumably the reader will be interested in finance and thus will come with some rudimentary knowledge of stocks, bonds, options, and financial decision making. The last topic involves utility theory, of course; hopefully the reader will be familiar with this and related topics of introductory microeconomic theory. Some exposure to linearprogramming would be advantageous, but not necessary.

The aim of this book is to provide a rigorous treatment of the financial theory while maintaining a casual style. Readers seeking institutional knowledge about securities, derivatives, and portfolio management should look elsewhere, but those seeking a careful introduction to financial engineering will find that this is a useful and comprehensive introduction to the subject.
