""Emergency Responder: Advanced First Aid for Non-EMS Personnel""is not just another first-aid book. Designed for working professionals, this flexible program blends textbook with online modules and instructor-led hands-on training events. Drawing from their years of experience training and developing emergency response teams, the authors cover the most important skills needed in order to effectively respond to life-threatening events. Carefully designed skill sheets included in the text assist readers in developing the competency necessary to perform each skill with accuracy and confidence. Establishing a foundation in the basic concepts of emergency medical care, the text presents in a logical, easy-to-follow format many of the most common illnesses and injuries responders are likely to encounter. The authors provide realistic depth and breadth of information in a way that will make you successful caring for people who have fallen victim to sudden illness or injury.
Underneath the lights and sirens beats the heart of a healer The author rode the first wave of Mobile Intensive Care Unit Paramedics in the U.S. in the 1970's. He became a reflection of allopathic medicine's shift from hands-on patient "care" into a litigation-driven, technologically-oriented "delivery system." Like many of his peers, he morphed into a competent "Flesh Mechanic." Somewhere along the line he lost his soul. In an at times painfully honest memoir, the author describes moments at the mid-point of his career that rocked him to his very core. Through sometimes harrowing, sometimes transcendental experience, his defenses were chipped away; forcing him to come to grips with the human being he had become and could no longer continue to be. By facing his demons, however, he came to better understand his place in humankind's battle against death; now, he found himself lending a hand in the struggles of Life. This book is for you or anyone you love who is challenged by issues of emotional, philosophic, moral, psychic or spiritual natures while serving human beings in distress. Its purpose is to get medics of all stripes talking about their personal challenges as if they mattered

the edge of a world of grueling realities not known by most
Americans." Doctors Without Borders (aka Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) was founded in 1971 by rebellious French doctors. It is arguably the most respected humanitarian organization in the world, delivering emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics and natural disasters as well as to many others who lack reliable health care. Dan Bortolotti follows the volunteers at the forefront of this
organization and its work, who daily risk their lives to perform
surgery, establish or rehabilitate hospitals and clinics, run
nutrition and sanitation programs, and train local medical
personnel. These volunteer professionals: Perform emergency surgery
in war-torn regions of Africa, Asia and elsewhere This new and revised third edition includes updates and new inside stories from recent relief operations, and it covers changes within the organization, such as its new emphasis on nutrition. There are also many new and revealing color photographs and insights gained from the author's 2009 trip to Haiti, where he found three different arms of MSF operating in dire conditions. The Oxford Manual of Major Incident Management brings together and integrates the key facts for all those involved in major incident planning and response. This will be an invaluable resource for a wide range of professionals, from doctors across emergency medicine, public health, general practice, pre-hospital care, and communicable disease control, to nurses, emergency services, administrators and planners. Transport, industrial, and natural disasters have always necessitated a coordinated interagency, multi-professional response, and with the rising threat in terrorist incidents, that need has never been greater. The information base required to plan for and manage this response has now been collected together into a single user friendly volume, clearly describing the hazards and their management at all stages. This manual will be useful in planning for all types of major incident, acting as the basis for training, and as an aide-memoir during an event. Authoritative, comprehensive, and concise, this quick-reference guide will be of use to both established experts and to novices in the field.
This study of Medecins Sans Frontieres / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) casts new light on the organization's founding principles, distinctive culture, and inner struggles to realize more fully its "without borders" transnational vision. Pioneering medical sociologist Renee C. Fox spent nearly twenty years conducting extensive ethnographic research within MSF, a private international medical humanitarian organization that was created in 1971 and awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1999. With unprecedented access, Fox attended MSF meetings and observed doctors and other workers in the field. She interviewed MSF members and participants and analyzed the content of such documents as communications between MSF staff members within the offices of its various headquarters, communications between headquarters and the field, and transcripts of internal group discussions and meetings. Fox weaves these threads of information into a rich tapestry of the MSF experience that reveals the dual perspectives of an insider and an observer. The book begins with moving, detailed accounts from the blogs of women and men working for MSF in the field. From there, Fox chronicles the organization's early history and development, paying special attention to its struggles during the first decades of its existence to clarify and implement its principles. The core of the book is centered on her observations in the field of MSF's efforts to combat a rampant epidemic of HIV/AIDS in postapartheid South Africa and the organization's response to two challenges in postsocialist Russia: an enormous surge in homelessness on the streets of Moscow and a massive epidemic of tuberculosis in the penal colonies of Siberia. Fox's accounts of these crises exemplify MSF's struggles to provide for thousands of people in need when both the populations and the aid workers are in danger. Enriched by vivid photographs of MSF operations and by ironic, self-critical cartoons drawn by a member of the Communications Department of MSF France, Doctors Without Borders highlights the bold mission of the renowned international humanitarian organization even as it demonstrates the intrinsic dilemmas of humanitarian action.
Retrieval Medicine is a core, concise and practical text covering the complex clinical and logistical problems experienced in the retrieval environment. Focusing on evidence-based management and clear clinical guidance, this easily portable handbook provides a comprehensive and accessible guide to this growing field for all health professionals involved in the retrieval and transfer of critically ill patients. Covering the practice of acute, emergency and critical care medicine in the transport environment, this handbook provides the practical guidance and clinical knowledge to enable medical practitioners to function independently in highly variable and resource limited environments with acutely unwell, unstable and often clinically undifferentiated patients over long durations. Closely mapped to the Royal College of Surgeons syllabus on retrieval and transfer medicine, this title comprehensively covers all aspects of retrieval medicine, from basic flight physiology to more complex retrievals and common pitfalls. Authored by an authoritative, international team of expert editors and specialist authors, this clinically focused text is complemented by a range of checklists and reference tools for practical and accessible use in the field. These deliver core information for use in the primary retrieval setting, allowing the retreivalist to structure their approach to a crisis and correct the problem with suggested interventions. Topics include retrieval systems and coordination, crisis resource management, shock, and a range of chapters focusing on responding to specific areas of medicine when encountered in the retrieval environment, such as cardiology and obstetrics and gynaecology.
"Man, I've seen, believe it or not, a head-on accident in the parking lot of a Macy's sale. What do they have, those white sales, is that what they have? The parking lot was completely barren except these two cars that hit each other head on. This little old lady and some other idiot. How do you do that? A barren parking lot Completely empty, morning, nobody there, and somehow they managed to hit each other head on. Well, it was just enough trauma to kill her, you know? Barely any damage but, you know, a little old lady driving a big car, a big old gnarly steering wheel and that's enough to kill an elderly person and stuff ." As they race to and from emergency calls, as they wait and watch, and as they administer aid to the traumatized, paramedics tell stories. Their tales disclose much about how they view their own profession. Their duties are much more complex than the dramatic portrayals that reach the living room via the television screen. This book reports what really goes on behind the scenes. The reader of Talking Trauma has a virtual front seat in the ambulance. Here the focus is not on the mechanics of the job but rather on paramedics' work culture and their well-established storytelling tradition. The stories they tell are cynical, flip, and profane--the very antithesis of "heroic" in the romantic sense. Their narratives evince an "anti-epic" quality that intentionally trivializes the conventional immensities of pain and horror. Paramedics present the gothic as "business as usual," and mainly their stories are intended only for the ears of other paramedics. Their stories afford a shocking glimpse into a chaotic urban underworld where prostitution, drug abuse, assault, and murder are daily fare. Outsiders may expect their tales to be only about horrific mutilation and death. However compelling such topics may be to the layperson, the actual repertory is most often commentary on personal experience and revelation of the "why" behind the stories paramedics tell. Talking Trauma provides an intimate look into a work culture deliberately kept hidden from public view. It is not centered on individuals the public may stereotype as streetwise, hardened caregivers but upon the stories of self-presentation by which paramedics structure past events to fit into their identity. This fascinating book reveals how storytelling equips these professionals to exert control over chaos and to withstand encounters with suffering, death, and mayhem on a daily basis. At the University of California, Los Angeles, Timothy R. Tangherlini is an assistant professor in the Scandinavian Section and affiliated with the Folklore and Mythology Program.
