This beautiful book of narrative non-fiction looks at the urban
forest and dives into the question of how we can live in harmony
with city trees. "Imagine a city draped in a blanket of green ...
Is this the city you know?" A Forest in the City looks at the urban
forest, starting with a bird's-eye view of the tree canopy, then
swooping down to street level, digging deep into the ground, then
moving up through a tree's trunk, back into the leaves and
branches. Trees make our cities more beautiful and provide shade
but they also fight climate change and pollution, benefit our
health and connections to one another, provide food and shelter for
wildlife, and much more. Yet city trees face an abundance of
problems, such as the abundance of concrete, poor soil and
challenging light conditions. So how can we create a healthy
environment for city trees? Urban foresters are trying to create
better growing conditions, plant diverse species, and maintain
trees as they age. These strategies, and more, reveal that the
urban forest is a complex system-A Forest in the City shows readers
we are a part of it. Includes a list of activities to help the
urban forest and a glossary. The ThinkCities series is inspired by
the urgency for new approaches to city life as a result of climate
change, population growth and increased density. It highlights the
challenges and risks cities face, but also offers hope for building
resilience, sustainability and quality of life as young people act
as advocates for themselves and their communities. Key Text

The first comprehensive history of international efforts to protect the ozone layer, this book chronicles the greatest success yet achieved in managing human impacts on the global environment. It examines the parallel developments of politics and negotiations, scientific understanding and controversy, technological progress, and industry strategy, from the 1970's to the present.
Explore spectacular visual timelines that tell the story of
science, from fossils to quantum physics, and discover exactly how
science has changed the world - one discovery at a time. Timelines
of Science takes you on an astonishing journey through history,
showing how dedication, disasters, and eureka moments have brought
us antibiotics, electricity, space exploration, and so much more!
Packed with fascinating facts, amazing images, and some seriously
staggering science, this science history book shows how thousands
of years of human endeavour have expanded our knowledge and shaped
our lives. Find out why the fruitless search for a potion of
eternal life led to the birth to chemistry. See how the invention
of magnifying lenses opened new windows into the cosmos and
micro-cosmos. And learn how happy accidents led to the discovery of
X-rays, batteries, pulsars, and even the big bang. Dive deep into
the pages of this sublime science book to discover: - Timeline

running text in a newspaper-style layout - Biographies showcase the
lives of key men and women who reshaped scientific thought
Timelines of Science is not just about science - it's also a book
about people! The stories of discovery are told through the lives
of extraordinary men and women who often dared to challenge
conventional wisdom in their trailblazing pursuit of scientific
truth. Filled with dazzling illustrations, spectacular photography,
and easy-to-follow storytelling, Timelines of Science is guaranteed
to capture the imagination of children and adults of all ages and
abilities. A must-have volume for children 9+ interested in
science, technology, and invention, doubling up as the perfect gift
to for budding scientists, Timelines of Science is sure to delight.
Grouped by color and by plant characteristics, 1,293 species in 84 families are described and illustrated. Included here are all the flowers you're most likely to encounter in the eastern and north-central U.S., westward to the Dakotas and southward to North Carolina and Arkansas, as well as the adjacent parts of Canada.
Like three guides in one, Scientific Argumentation in Biology
combines theory, practice, and biological content. This
thought-provoking book starts by giving you solid background in why
students need to be able to go beyond expressing mere opinions when
making research-related biology claims. Then it provides 30
field-tested activities your students can use when learning to
propose, support, and evaluate claims; validate or refute them on
the basis of scientific reasoning; and craft complex written
arguments. Detailed teacher notes suggest specific ways to use the
activities to enrich and supplement (not replace) what you're doing
in class already. You'll find Scientific Argumentation to be an
ideal way to help your students learn standards-based content,
improve their practices, and develop scientific habits of mind.

"B95 can feel it: a stirring in his bones and feathers. It's
time. Today is the day he will once again cast himself into the
air, spiral upward into the clouds, and bank into the wind."
He wears a black band on his lower right leg and an orange flag
on his upper left, bearing the laser inscription B95. Scientists
call him the Moonbird because, in the course of his astoundingly
long lifetime, this gritty, four-ounce marathoner has flown the
distance to the moon--and halfway back
B95 is a robin-sized shorebird, a red knot of the subspecies
"rufa. "Each February he joins a flock that lifts off from Tierra
del Fuego, headed for breeding grounds in the Canadian Arctic, nine
thousand miles away. Late in the summer, he begins the return
journey.
B95 can fly for days without eating or sleeping, but eventually
he must descend to refuel and rest. However, recent changes at
ancient refueling stations along his migratory circuit--changes
caused mostly by human activity--have reduced the food available
and made it harder for the birds to reach. And so, since 1995, when
B95 was first captured and banded, the worldwide "rufa "population
has collapsed by nearly 80 percent. Most perish somewhere along the
great hemispheric circuit, but the Moonbird wings on. He has been
seen as recently as November 2011, which makes him nearly twenty
years old. Shaking their heads, scientists ask themselves: How can
this one bird make it year after year when so many others fall?
National Book Award-winning author Phillip Hoose takes us around
the hemisphere with the world's most celebrated shorebird, showing
the obstacles "rufa" red knots face, introducing a worldwide team
of scientists and conservationists trying to save them, and
offering insights about what we can do to help shorebirds before
it's too late. With inspiring prose, thorough research, and
stirring images, Hoose explores the tragedy of extinction through
the triumph of a single bird. "Moonbird "is one "The Washington
Post"'s Best Kids Books of 2012.
Charles Darwin published "The Origin of Species," his revolutionary
tract on evolution and the fundamental ideas involved, in 1859.
Nearly 150 years later, the theory of evolution continues to create
tension between the scientific and religious communities.
Challenges about teaching the theory of evolution in schools occur
annually all over the country. This same debate raged within Darwin
himself, and played an important part in his marriage: his wife,
Emma, was quite religious, and her faith gave Charles a lot to
think about as he worked on a theory that continues to spark
intense debates.
Deborah Heiligman's new biography of Charles Darwin is a
thought-provoking account of the man behind evolutionary theory:
how his personal life affected his work and vice versa. The end
result is an engaging exploration of history, science, and religion
for young readers.

The Knowledge Quiz series is a deviously simple and effective way
for students to revise for GCSE subjects. Put together by teaching
experts, these easy-to-use books feature tear-out quizzes to help
students memorise the large body of knowledge that form the basis
of success in exams.Rather than just flicking through revision
cards expecting things to stick in your memory, self-quizzing
allows students to complete multiple copies of the same quiz and
kept doing them until you get them right every time. This edition
will help students to effectively drill the essential facts
necessary for success in the GCSE Biology exam.
A revised and rearranged fourth edition of our previously titled
CXC Biology. Comprehensively covering the CSEC syllabus
requirements, this full-colour edition contains carefully
controlled language to make the text accessible for a wide ability
range. Biology for CSEC includes questions throughout to test
understanding in progressive steps and reinforces new knowledge and
concepts through revision questions at the end of each chapter.
This edition also incorporates many investigations throughout the
text, almost all of which could be used for the assessment of
practical skills, and a full apparatus list which takes into
account the new guidelines on safety. A detailed contents list, a
complete glossary and a comprehensive index are also included.
