Cross-cultural business negotiations are an important part of international business. Much business has been lost overseas due to miscalculations caused by cultural differences. Negotiating is a lengthy, difficult process by itself; but, when one adds the cultural aspect it becomes extremely intricate. Cross-cultural negotiation skills can be improved by adequate attention to details and a better understanding of the cultural heritage of the other side. This work examines cross-cultural negotiations from the point of view of a practitioner, and provides country profiles with advice on how to best negotiate with people from those countries. International business negotiations are made more difficult by problems of communications and culture. In order to conduct business outside of one's native culture, it is necessary to understand the style and intent of the business partners, and to learn to deal with culturally based differences. In addition, communciations are conducted verbally and non-verbally; therefore, it is not just a problem of language barriers. The authors show those involved in international business how to conduct their business communications successfully by seeing what is important about the transactions through eyes of another culture. The authors are widely experienced in cultures other than that of the United States. Having lived and worked in many parts of the world in addition to the United States, the authors advise business professionals and business academicians in this work.

Odysseus lost his way, but students shouldn't have to. This delightful companion, written in a lively narrative style and full of fresh insights and interpretations, offers teachers a wealth of ideas for making Homer's timeless epic come alive for students. Introductory chapters provide the historical and mythological background necessary to fully appreciate the events in the Odyssey. A fascinating essay acquaints students with Homeric values and another examines the Odyssey as literature, offering expert discussion of the work's structure and poetic features and situating it in the oral tradition it exemplifies. Maps, charts, tables, and photographs help readers further appreciate the story and its historical context. At the core of this resource are units on each of the 24 books of the Odyssey; each is attractively presented with an illustration, plot synopsis, and discussion of theme and character development. Well-placed sidebars offer supplemental information on various facets of classical antiquity, such as the position of women in Ancient Greece, the role of competitive sports, and interesting etymological aspects of the Greek language. At the back of the book is a listing of main characters, along with a handy pronunciation guide. Additional appendices explore the enduring influence of the Odyssey in literature, the arts, and even popular culture, with a separate section examining Odyssean themes in movies. Useful ideas for activities and classroom projects are offered, as are suggestions for further reading and online research.

Unlock your students’ creative potential by exploring the intersections between CS and art across various types of artistic media, including drawing, animation, music and physically interactive art. While there are books that discuss the intersection of the arts and computer science (CS), there are none written for K-12 teachers that cover the content overlaps between CS and the arts beyond a single programming environment, and that feature approaches and examples of practicing artists. Coding and the Arts fills that gap. CS sometimes gets a bad rap as dry, isolated and uninteresting work — the pursuit of analytically minded techies working alone. In reality, programming is deeply creative and enables artists of all types to discover new ways to express themselves. In this book, you’ll explore how to apply computation to stretch the possibilities in many art forms, as well as how to pave the way for entirely new ones. By approaching programming tools as artistic media, you’ll connect the dots between programming, creativity and artistic expression. Along the way, you’ll learn from a diverse set of computational artists and teachers who are using technology to push the bounds of traditional artistic media. Chapters include: Spotlights of working artists and educators who are integrating computing into their art. Deep dives into artistic programming environments, exploring their unique benefits, constraints and impact on classroom use. Alignment to the four pillars of computational thinking to help you create richer learning experiences for students. Lesson sketches aligned with CS concepts and the ISTE Computational Thinking Competencies. The book also offers strategies for supporting students in developing as computational artists, including the attitudes and practices that will help them as artists and computer scientists.

History is full of examples where there are important stories that took place which coincided with a landmark event. There is no shortage of items worth mentioning that have been overshadowed by other aspects of history. This book is about those events with one dedicated to each day of the year that it took place. The United States doesn't have a prolonged period of history like some other countries, although for a nation that has been around for fewer years, the events are interesting, exciting, and can often bring a smile. |
