Retooling Global Development and Governance (Hardcover, New): Manuel Montes, Rob Vos Retooling Global Development and Governance (Hardcover, New)
Manuel Montes, Rob Vos
R3,968 Discovery Miles 39 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on bloomsburycollections.com. In Retooling Global Development and Governance a team of UN experts debate new ideas about how to overcome deficiencies in the ongoing process of globalization and in the existing mechanisms for global economic governance. They do not claim to offer a blueprint, rather a set of ideas that could become the basis for a coherent "toolbox" designed to guide development policies and international cooperation. Promising directions for reform discussed in the book include: - Strengthening government capacities for formulating and implementing national development strategies - New strategies for ensuring that official development assistance is aligned with national priorities - Enhancing international trade and financial systems so that countries with limited capabilities can successfully integrate into the global economy - Creating new mechanisms for dealing with deficiencies, such as specialized multilateral frameworks through which to govern international migration and labour mobility, international financial regulation, multinational corporations and global value chains regulation and sovereign debt workouts. Above all, the book highlights the need for a strong mechanism for global economic coordination to establish coherence across all areas of global economic governance.

Identity in Transformation - Postmodernity, Postcommunism, and Globalization (Hardcover): Marian Kempny, Aldona Jawlowska Identity in Transformation - Postmodernity, Postcommunism, and Globalization (Hardcover)
Marian Kempny, Aldona Jawlowska
R2,917 Discovery Miles 29 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This interdisciplinary volume analyzes the strong links between the way we form our individual and collective identities and the type of society in which we live. The contributors--who include sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and philosophers--focus on the issue of modern identity both on a conceptual level and in the context of European unification and progressive globalization. Among the issues examined are the tension between our fluid, situation-specific identity and our constant attempt to create a coherent image of the self; the transformation of identities resulting from the collective experiences of East European societies in the aftermath of Communism; and the interplay between the evolution of the modes of constitution of identity and the social changes determined by European integration.

Globalizing Responsibility - The Political Rationalities of Ethical Consumption (Hardcover, New): C.B. Arnett Globalizing Responsibility - The Political Rationalities of Ethical Consumption (Hardcover, New)
C.B. Arnett
R1,958 Discovery Miles 19 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Globalizing Responsibility: The Political Rationalities of Ethical Consumption presents an innovative reinterpretation of the forces that have shaped the remarkable growth of ethical consumption. * Develops a theoretically informed new approach to shape our understanding of the pragmatic nature of ethical action in consumption processes * Provides empirical research on everyday consumers, social networks, and campaigns * Fills a gap in research on the topic with its distinctive focus on fair trade consumption * Locates ethical consumption within a range of social theoretical debates -on neoliberalism, governmentality, and globalisation * Challenges the moralism of much of the analysis of ethical consumption, which sees it as a retreat from proper citizenly politics and an expression of individualised consumerism

Global Competitiveness and Innovation - An Agent-Centred Perspective (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): G. Clark, P. Tracey Global Competitiveness and Innovation - An Agent-Centred Perspective (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
G. Clark, P. Tracey
R3,006 Discovery Miles 30 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The key arguments and debates about globalization have raised searching questions about the significance of national and regional borders for the competitive strategies of individuals, firms and industries." Global Competitiveness and Innovation" seeks to address these issues by exploring four key topics: The status of economic agents in the emerging global economy; the limits of path dependence and the scope of agent action; the relationship between agents' decision-making and their environments; and agents' learning capacities in a world of information and knowledge creation.

Global Financial Markets at the Turn of the Century (Hardcover): Ilhan Meric, Gulser Meric Global Financial Markets at the Turn of the Century (Hardcover)
Ilhan Meric, Gulser Meric
R3,993 Discovery Miles 39 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The world's financial markets experienced a strong globalization trend in the 20th century. With the removal of barriers to cross-border flow of capital, financial markets have become truly global during the last two decades of the century. The research papers included in this book study a number of important issues in the world's financial markets. The recent emerging markets crisis, which started in South-Eeast Asia and affected all the world's developed and emerging financial markets, is studied in detail. Another important issue, which receives considerable coverage in the book, is the European financial integration. The financial markets in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America are studied extensively and the linkages between them are analyzed. The objective of the book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive and balanced overview of the world's financial markets at the end of the 20th century.

Language and the City (Hardcover): Diarmait Mac Giolla Chriost Language and the City (Hardcover)
Diarmait Mac Giolla Chriost
R3,275 Discovery Miles 32 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Language and the City "shows how the contemporary form of globalization has certain effects on language in social context and identifies the city as the most important site for the realization of these effects. The book challenges a set of assumptions that hold sustainable linguistic diversity to be inherently non-urban while regarding the city as an unproblematic site for understanding the social function of language. The central purpose of the work is to construct a fresh conceptual framework for understanding language-city relationships.

Global Alliances in the Motor Vehicle Industry (Hardcover): Leslie S. Hiraoka Global Alliances in the Motor Vehicle Industry (Hardcover)
Leslie S. Hiraoka
R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The globalization of the motor vehicle industry--specifically, cars and light trucks--has engendered new forms of competition and cooperation with less regard for national boundaries than ever before. The DaimlerChrysler merger, the GM-Toyota joint venture, the Renault equity stake in Nissan, the Ford takeover of Mazda, Jaguar, and Volvo cars, and direct foreign investments in Mexico, Mercosur (Mercado Com DEGREESD'un del Sur), China, and India--developments like these are almost impossible to keep up with. Hiraoka, a prize-winning analyst of manufacturing excellence in the automotive industry, surveys them and their causes and presents a clarifying picture with thoroughness and depth.

Hiraoka's explanation of the various factors contributing to globalization of the motor vehicle industry provides the background information necessary to gain perspective on recent events. These developments include e-commerce networks, alliances with local and far-flung parts suppliers, low-cost mass production and distribution systems, the launching of hybrid products in mature economies, and the buildup of capacity in emerging markets. His analysis ranges widely, delving into managerial reactions to regional free-trade blocks, currency crises, government shifts away from central planning and trade protectionism, the vicissitudes of business cycles in emerging markets, and the juxtaposition of Japan's prolonged recession and the booming American motor vehicle market. Corporate decision-makers, labor leaders, policy analysts, researchers, students, and industry observers will benefit from understanding the global characteristics of today's motor vehicle industry.

East Asian Democratization - Impact of Globalization, Culture, and Economy (Hardcover, New): Robert W. Compton East Asian Democratization - Impact of Globalization, Culture, and Economy (Hardcover, New)
Robert W. Compton
R2,915 Discovery Miles 29 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It may be tempting to view political development and democratization in East Asia from a global view and conclude that the contours of democracy will converge throughout the world. However, a close examination of the cultural and economic development of Asian societies suggests a contrary picture. The story of Asia is one of political and economic survival, in which political elites sought to legitimate their authority through the use of both traditional and modern symbols. Traditional communitarian values and the modern symbols of economic growth and materialism coexist in Asian political systems. The stability and legitimacy of Asian governments depend on the ability of political elites to balance these symbols. As globalization proceeds, the standard traditional and modern symbols have waned in their effectiveness. Therefore, democracy as a symbol and practice can provide new sources of legitimacy to these political systems.

Compton's Asian political development model is tested with quantitative indicators and through a series of case studies. The three case studies--Japan, South Korea, and Thailand--build on each other through a rigorous historical comparison. While the case studies themselves are interesting, he makes connections to the model and tests the congruence of these cases to the model, and concludes that the model's validity is predicated on the internal environment, including culture and economy. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and researchers involved with comparative and Asian politics, political development, and political culture.

Democratic Dilemmas of Multilevel Governance - Legitimacy, Representation and Accountability in the European Union (Hardcover):... Democratic Dilemmas of Multilevel Governance - Legitimacy, Representation and Accountability in the European Union (Hardcover)
J. Debardeleben, A. Hurrelmann
R1,601 Discovery Miles 16 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 'democratic deficit' of the European Union is a much discussed-concern of politicians and commentators, and this insightful collection argues that this is a result of the multi-level nature of EU governance. Popular loyalties become divided between levels of government, lines of accountability become ambiguous and supranational institutions seem distant from citizens. These challenges are part of broader globalizing processes that have destabilized the traditional notion of the nation state and replaced it with multilevel forms of governance across the globe.
Focusing on the EU, this volume examines the problems multilevel governance causes for democratic legitimacy by placing it in a comparative and theoretical context, and explore how challenges faced by the EU compare with those faced by traditional federal systems worldwide. Through a combination of theoretical perspectives and empirical research, this book offers the means to evaluate the various explanations for the problems facing democracy within the EU and shows how legitimacy and accountability can be improved.

Global Forces and State Restructuring - Dynamics of State Formation and Collapse (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): M. Doornbos Global Forces and State Restructuring - Dynamics of State Formation and Collapse (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
M. Doornbos
R1,596 Discovery Miles 15 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study explores a range of dynamics in state-society relations which are crucial to an understanding of the contemporary world: processes of state formation, collapse and restructuring, all strongly influenced by globalization in its various respects. The themes addressed include strategies of state construction, and trajectories of state decline, collapse and re-start, the politics of statelessness and the dynamics of identity and power. Particular attention is given to externally orchestrated state restructuring and to the varying capacities of state systems in the South to cope with the impact of global forces.

Foreign Investment, Development, and Globalization - Can Costa Rica Become Ireland? (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): EPA Us Foreign Investment, Development, and Globalization - Can Costa Rica Become Ireland? (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
EPA Us
R1,615 Discovery Miles 16 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book engages the question, hotly debated among theorists and policymakers alike, of how a developing country's pursuit of foreign direct investment (FDI) affects its development prospects in a globalized world. Can small latecomers to economic development use high-tech FDI to rapidly expand indigenous capabilities, thus shortcutting stages of the industrialization process? What conditions, economic and non-economic, must be met for this strategy to succeed? Using the cases of Ireland and Costa Rica, the author shows how the dynamics of the FDI-development nexus have changed over time, rendering problematic Costa Rica's attempt, and those of other latecomers, to replicate the Celtic Tiger's success story.

Engaging with Work in English Studies - An Issue-based Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Alastair Henry, Ake Persson Engaging with Work in English Studies - An Issue-based Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Alastair Henry, Ake Persson
R4,581 Discovery Miles 45 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited book focuses on practices of work in late modern society, taking an 'issue-based' and interdisciplinary approach to English Studies which acknowledges the impact of globalization on the position of English in the daily existence of millions of people around the world. Envisioning English as "a diverse yet unified subject" where the study of literature, language, and education can be pursued thematically, it constitutes part of an ongoing transformation and revitalization of English Studies. It will be of interest to readers with backgrounds in linguistics, literature and education, as well as fields normally seen as lying 'beyond' English Studies such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, urban studies, political science and childhood studies.

Bilingualism: A Social Approach (Hardcover): M. Heller Bilingualism: A Social Approach (Hardcover)
M. Heller
R3,058 Discovery Miles 30 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contributors to this volume provide a critical examination of the notion of bilingualism as it has developed in linguistics and of its use in discourses of social regulation in state and civil society in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. They attempt to move the field away from a common sense, but in fact highly ideologized, view of bilingualism as the co-existence of two linguistic systems, and to develop a critical perspective which approaches bilingualism as a wide variety of sets of sociolinguistics practices connected to the construction of social difference and of social inequality under specific historical conditions.

The Cosmopolitanization of Science - Stem Cell Governance in China (Hardcover): J. Zhang The Cosmopolitanization of Science - Stem Cell Governance in China (Hardcover)
J. Zhang
R1,590 Discovery Miles 15 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Focussing on China's stem cell research, this book investigates how, over the last decade, Chinese scientists, ethicists and policy-makers have developed a cosmopolitan sensibility in comprehending and responding to ethical and regulatory concerns.

Reassessing the Internationalization of the Firm (Hardcover, 1st ed): C.N. Axinn, P. Matthyssens Reassessing the Internationalization of the Firm (Hardcover, 1st ed)
C.N. Axinn, P. Matthyssens; Series edited by S. Tamer Cavusgil
R4,221 Discovery Miles 42 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the international behaviour of firms changes, so too must the theories used to describe, explain and predict that behaviour change. This volume is conceived as an exploration of the evolving nature of internationalization in the context of shifting environmental forces in an effort to: highlight the nature of firms' changing behaviours; explore the potential reasons for those changes; and propose new perspectives from which a more contemporary theory of internationalization can be developed. The papers in this volume examine the internationalization behaviour of a wide range of firms, from MNCs to SMEs, including firms from both developed and emerging economies. Consideration is given to the rapid internationalization of "born global" firms, to inward as well as outward internationalization and to the dynamic nature of internationalization at the beginning of the 21st century.

The Globalization of Strangeness (Hardcover): C Rumford The Globalization of Strangeness (Hardcover)
C Rumford
R1,948 Discovery Miles 19 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The figure of the stranger is in serious need of revision, as is our understanding of the society against which the stranger is projected. Under conditions of globalization, inside/outside markers have been eroded and conventional indicators of "we-ness" are no longer reliable. We now live in a generalized state of strangeness, one consequence of globalization: we no longer know where our community ends and another one begins. In such circumstances it is often the case that neighbors are the nearest strangers. Strangeness occurs when global consciousness outstrips global connectivity and this means that we need to rethink some core elements of globalization theory.
Under conditions of strangeness the stranger is a "here today, gone tomorrow" figure. This book identifies the cosmopolitan stranger as the most significant contemporary figure of the stranger, one adept at negotiating the 'confined spaces' of globalization in order to promote new forms of social solidarity and connect with distant others.

Globalisation, Education, and Reform in Brunei Darussalam (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Le Ha Phan, Asiyah Kumpoh, Keith Wood,... Globalisation, Education, and Reform in Brunei Darussalam (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Le Ha Phan, Asiyah Kumpoh, Keith Wood, Rosmawijah Jawawi, Hardimah Said
R4,633 Discovery Miles 46 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the intertwined relationships between globalisation, nation-building, education, and reform as manifested throughout the modern history of Brunei Darussalam, an Islamic monarchy located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is the first book dedicated to the examination of Brunei's education system, schooling, teacher education, and society in close connection with the national philosophy Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) or Malay Islamic Monarchy. The authors provide a historical understanding of the country's education and tell Brunei's story of educational reform and change in its own language, narratives, accounts, and unique standpoints. Interdisciplinary chapters draw on significant historical and textual sources in three languages, namely Arabic, English, and Malay, to contribute to scholarship on education studies, international and comparative education, and international and development education.

Religions, Nations, and Transnationalism in Multiple Modernities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Patrick Michel, Adam Possamai,... Religions, Nations, and Transnationalism in Multiple Modernities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Patrick Michel, Adam Possamai, Bryan S. Turner
R4,267 Discovery Miles 42 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited book explores the impact of globalisation on the relationship between religion and politics, religion and nation, religion and nationalism, and the impact that transnationalism has on religious groups. In a post-Westphalian and transnational world, with increased international communication and transportation, a plethora of new religious recompositions religions now take part in a network society that cuts across borders. This collection, through its analysis of historical and contemporary case studies, explores the growth of both national and transnational religious movements and their dealings with the various versions of modernity that they encounter. It considers trends of religious revitalisation and secularisation, and processes of nationalism and transnationalism through the prism of the theory of multiple modernities, acknowledging both its pluralist world view but also the argument that its definition of modernity is often so inclusive as to lose coherence. Providing a cutting edge take on 21st century religion and globalization, this volume is a key read for all scholars of religion, secularisation and transnationalism.

The Relocation of English - Shifting Paradigms in a Global Era (Hardcover): M. Saraceni The Relocation of English - Shifting Paradigms in a Global Era (Hardcover)

The Poor under Globalization in Asia, Latin America, and Africa (Hardcover): Machiko Nissanke, Erik Thorbecke The Poor under Globalization in Asia, Latin America, and Africa (Hardcover)
Machiko Nissanke, Erik Thorbecke
R5,664 Discovery Miles 56 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Globalization and poverty are two of the most pressing contemporary international development issues. Despite the enormous potential of globalization to accelerate economic growth and development, through greater integration into the world economy, the spread and transfer of technology, and the transmission of knowledge, its impact on poverty reduction has been uneven and even marginal in some regions. Both the prevalence and depth of poverty in many parts of the developing world remain unacceptably high.
This volume presents thirteen studies selected from the three regional conferences organized under the auspices of UNU-WIDER. They illustrate the differential effects of globalization on growth, inequality, and poverty in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Distinct processes of institutional and socio-political change, as well as significant differences in initial conditions, such as natural resource endowment, the quantity and quality of human capital, institutional framework, and the quality of governance, have had diverse effects on the poor in these regions. Focusing on distinct manifestations of globalization and their affect on poverty, these case studies cover the spectrum from broad macroeconomic regional and country analyses to micro-oriented village studies in each of the three continents. This volume clearly illustrates that the impact of globalization on poverty is extremely context specific, reflecting the heterogeneous and complex nature of the globalization-poverty nexus.

Pacific Futures - Past and Present (Hardcover): Warwick Anderson, Miranda Johnson, Barbara Brookes Pacific Futures - Past and Present (Hardcover)
Warwick Anderson, Miranda Johnson, Barbara Brookes; Contributions by Tony Ballantyne, Chris Ballard, …
R2,694 Discovery Miles 26 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How, when, and why has the Pacific been a locus for imagining different futures by those living there as well as passing through? What does that tell us about the distinctiveness or otherwise of this "sea of islands"? Foregrounding the work of leading and emerging scholars of Oceania, Pacific Futures brings together a diverse set of approaches to, and examples of, how futures are being conceived in the region and have been imagined in the past. Individual chapters engage the various and sometimes contested futures yearned for, unrealized, and even lost or forgotten, that are particular to the Pacific as a region, ocean, island network, destination, and home. Contributors recuperate the futures hoped for and dreamed up by a vast array of islanders and outlanders-from Indigenous federalists to Lutheran improvers to Cantonese small business owners-making these histories of the future visible. In so doing, the collection intervenes in debates about globalization in the Pacific--and how the region is acted on by outside forces--and postcolonial debates that emphasize the agency and resistance of Pacific peoples in the context of centuries of colonial endeavor. With a view to the effects of the "slow violence" of climate change, the volume also challenges scholars to think about the conditions of possibility for future-thinking at all in the midst of a global crisis that promises cataclysmic effects for the region. Pacific Futures highlights futures conceived in the context of a modernity coproduced by diverse Pacific peoples, taking resistance to categorization as a starting point rather than a conclusion. With its hospitable approach to thinking about history making and future thinking, one that is open to a wide range of methodological, epistemological, and political interests and commitments, the volume will encourage the writing of new histories of the Pacific and new ways of talking about history in this field, the region, and beyond.

Capitalist Globalization - Consequences, Resistance, and Alternatives (Paperback, New): Martin Hart-Landsberg Capitalist Globalization - Consequences, Resistance, and Alternatives (Paperback, New)
Martin Hart-Landsberg
R428 Discovery Miles 4 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Globalization," surely one of the most used and abused buzzwords of recent decades, describes a phenomenon that is typically considered to be a neutral and inevitable expansion of market forces across the planet. Nearly all economists, politicians, business leaders, and mainstream journalists view globalization as the natural result of economic development, and a beneficial one at that. But, as noted economist Martin Hart-Landsberg argues, this perception does not match the reality of globalization. The rise of transnational corporations and their global production chains was the result of intentional and political acts, decisions made at the highest levels of power. Their aim - to increase profits by seeking the cheapest sources of labor and raw materials - was facilitated through policy-making at the national and international levels, and was largely successful. But workers in every nation have paid the costs, in the form of increased inequality and poverty, the destruction of social welfare provisions and labor unions, and an erratic global economy prone to bubbles, busts, and crises. This book examines the historical record of globalization and restores agency to the capitalists, policy-makers, and politicians who worked to craft a regime of world-wide exploitation. It demolishes their neoliberal ideology - already on shaky ground after the 2008 financial crisis - and picks apart the record of trade agreements like NAFTA and institutions like the WTO. But, crucially, Hart- Landsberg also discusses alternatives to capitalist globalization, looking to examples such as South America's Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) for clues on how to build an international economy based on solidarity, social development, and shared prosperity.
