Political Institutions and Development - Failed Expectations and Renewed Hopes (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Natalia... Political Institutions and Development - Failed Expectations and Renewed Hopes (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Natalia DINELLO, Vladimir Popov
R3,488 Discovery Miles 34 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Political Institutions and Development challenges the cliche that 'good institutions' are essential for sustainable socio-economic development by focusing on the need to adapt potential solutions to local conditions. The authors argue that there is no one optimal institutional design that can be successfully applied to any country. The macro- and micro-level studies contained in this book demonstrate that institutions are highly context-dependent and time-sensitive and must be tailored to local conditions. Specifically, law and order, effective governance, ethnic sensitivity, a supporting political culture, civil rights, and individual opportunities to participate in decision-making are also necessary. With its global perspective, this book explores the relationship between political institutions and development from such diverse regions as the Commonwealth of Independent States, East and South Asia, and Latin America. This book will appeal to scholars and researchers in political science, economics, political economy, development studies and globalization. It will also find a wider audience amongst policymakers, development agencies and policy communities throughout the world.

Attitudes Towards Europe Beyond Euroscepticism - Supporting the European Union through the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017):... Attitudes Towards Europe Beyond Euroscepticism - Supporting the European Union through the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Danilo Di Mauro, Vincenzo Memoli
R1,644 Discovery Miles 16 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book addresses the topic of EU legitimacy by exploring the forms, origins and effects of citizens' support to EU institutions. Through examining the wide-ranging levels of support, the authors show how these multi-faceted attitudes cast shade on the outdated, somewhat one-dimensional concept of Euroscepticism. Di Mauro and Memoli not only observe how political issues and the economic crisis affect public opinion, but also demonstrate how national contexts play a crucial role in shaping attitudes towards Europe at any level of support. This volume shows how the lack of accountability in the EU system makes it increasingly vulnerable to the negative effects of economic and societal shocks, and the 'national lens' that we view the EU through influences our voting choices.

International Facility Acquisition and Location Analysis (Hardcover): Marc J. Schniederjans International Facility Acquisition and Location Analysis (Hardcover)
Marc J. Schniederjans
R2,775 Discovery Miles 27 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

International acquisitions are failing at a rate of three out of four and international location decisions two times out of three. Where does corporate management locate a new facility or find one to acquire that will best satisfy the business objectives of survival and growth? A variety of decision making methodologies have emerged from the literature, but which are most workable? Schniederjans surveys these and other methods, analyzes and explains them carefully, and provides a new approach to help optimize the location selection decision. Included are cutting-edge applications and quantitative examples that can be easily grasped and quickly applied. With detailed appendices covering sources of international information available in print and electronically, the book will be essential for upper management and others who are engaged in planning the corporation's expansion and growth.

Schniederjans organizes his book into two parts. He defines his terminology and establishes a foundation to understand the use of acquisition and location methodologies in the first part, and covers the use of one or more methodologies in facility acquisition and location analysis internationally, supported by current research findings, in the second part. Included in his four appendices of source material is one that lists currently available computer software that supports the methodologies covered in the book. The book will also help save consulting fees and help redirect the study of its topic to make the facilities acquisition and location task yield more reliable results in coming years.

Global Sustainability - Social and Environmental Conditions (Hardcover): S. Borghesi, A. Vercelli Global Sustainability - Social and Environmental Conditions (Hardcover)
S. Borghesi, A. Vercelli
R2,886 Discovery Miles 28 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book analyzes the relationship between globalization and sustainable development. It presents analysis of the relationship between social and environmental conditions of sustainability. It explores the interaction between history of facts (globalization since the industrial revolution) and history of ideas (liberalism since Adam Smith). It focuses on generally neglected aspects such as health and social corporate responsibility. This book examines how consistent the post-war process of globalization has been with the basic requisites of sustainable development. It argues that the polarization of public opinion into support of either globalization or sustainable development has not helped an understanding of the issues, and that the confrontation should be abandoned.

The Trade Policy of Emerging Powers - Strategic Choices of Brazil and India (Hardcover, New): Laura Mahrenbach The Trade Policy of Emerging Powers - Strategic Choices of Brazil and India (Hardcover, New)
Laura Mahrenbach
R1,957 Discovery Miles 19 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As emerging powers deepen their involvement in world trade and global governance, it is crucial to explore the what and the why of their strategic choices vis-a-vis the World Trade Organization. This book does just that, examining the trade policy decisions of two emerging power states, Brazil and India, since 2001. In this timely work, Laura Carsten Mahrenbach develops a broad-based analytical framework which addresses trade policy within EP states, in their regions and on the global level. The findings underline the importance of examining domestic factors when trying to understand strategic decisions by emerging powers. They also have important implications for our understanding of the role of emerging power states in global (trade) governance.

U.S. Protectionism and the World Debt Crisis (Hardcover, New): Edward Ray U.S. Protectionism and the World Debt Crisis (Hardcover, New)
Edward Ray
R2,783 Discovery Miles 27 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ray presents a comprehensive review of U.S. trade policy since World War II, with particular emphasis on how that policy has affected developing countries. Special attention is given to trade policy shifts in the last twenty years in an attempt to determine whether or not U.S. trade concessions to developing countries contribute positively to their efforts to meet their considerable debt obligations. The author combines theoretical discussion with empirical data drawn from the seven leading debtor nations--Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, and Venezuela--in a provocative examination of the economic and sociopolitical causes and implications of changes in protectionism and the pattern of tariff and nontariff trade barriers in the last few decades.

Following an introductory analysis of the history of protectionism in the United States, Ray explores the role of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) after World War II in eliminating protection and the impact on developing countries of the changes in tariffs and in the use of nontariff trade barriers under the auspices of GATT. Subsequent chapters deal with such issues as the reasons for the adoption of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) adopted in 1975, the relationship between U.S. trade policies since 1975 and the world debt crisis, the reasons behind the adoption of the Caribbean Basin Initiative in 1983, and the 1985 revision of the GSP. A separate empirical chapter assesses the effects of the new GSP legislation on exports to the United States from developing countries in general and from the severely indebted seven in particular. The final chapter is organized around three major themes: the future course of U.S. trade policy, the likely impact of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement on the United States and Canada, and the Uruguay Round negotiations and the implications of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 on trade between the United States and the debtor nations. Students of international business, international politics, and economic development will find Ray's analysis of the relationship between trade protectionism and world debt an important contribution to current debates on the causes, effects, and solutions to the Third World debt crisis.

Northeast Asia - Ripe for Integration? (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Vinod K. Aggarwal, Min Gyo Koo, Seungjoo Lee, Chung-In Moon Northeast Asia - Ripe for Integration? (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Vinod K. Aggarwal, Min Gyo Koo, Seungjoo Lee, Chung-In Moon
R2,902 Discovery Miles 29 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Can regional mechanisms better institutionalize the increasing complexity of economic and security ties among the countries in Northeast Asia? As the international state system undergoes dramatic changes in both security and economic relations in the wake of the end of the Cold War, the Asian financial crisis, and the attack of 9/11, this question is now at the forefront of the minds of both academics and policymakers. Still, little research has been done to integrate the analysis of security and economic analysis of changes in the region within a broader context that will give us theoretically-informed policy insights. Against this backdrop, this book investigates the origins and evolution of Northeast Asia's new institutional architecture in trade, finance, and security from both a theoretical and empirical perspective.

Post-NAFTA North America - Reshaping the Economic and Political Governance of a Changing Region (Hardcover, Special): I. Morales Post-NAFTA North America - Reshaping the Economic and Political Governance of a Changing Region (Hardcover, Special)
I. Morales
R1,525 Discovery Miles 15 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Post-NAFTA North America" uniquely combines an institutional examination of NAFTA with a geo-economic and geo-political approach. The author argues that in the post-9/11 era, North America is evolving from a primarily economic space to a strategic 'securitized' one and that NAFTA has been utilized by the US as a regulatory framework for dealing with the pressures of globalization that have emerged in the post-Cold War era.

Adapting to Globalization - Malaysia, South Africa, and the Challenges of Ethnic Redistribution with Growth (Hardcover): Janis... Adapting to Globalization - Malaysia, South Africa, and the Challenges of Ethnic Redistribution with Growth (Hardcover)
Janis van der Westhuizen
R2,759 Discovery Miles 27 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Van der Westhuizen examines the remarkable similarity between the South African and Malaysian political economies, analyzes how Malay, Afrikaner, and African Nationalists have sought to make domestic demands for state intervention compatible with international pressures for economic liberalization, and shows what happens when they fail.

Globalization poses daunting challenges to state elites in the developing world. Caught between domestic expectations for state intervention to reduce inequalities on the one hand and global neo-liberal pressures for a liberalized economy on the other, the developing world bears the brunt of globalization's socially disruptive effects. For state elites in deeply divided societies like Malaysia and South Africa, the heightened potential for ethnic polarization makes the challenge twice as large. In both, state elites have sought to mitigate such polarization by embarking upon a program of ethnic redistribution with growth, that is, advancing subjugated ethnic majorities into the middle class through state intervention without fundamentally alienating the privileged ethnic minority upon whose economic dominance the process of social advance depends.

However, what happens if globalization prevents state elites from employing ethnic redistribution with growth? How do these state elites attempt to retain their legitimacy and what happens if they do not succeed? Van der Westhuizen examines these issues by showing how state elites in Malaysia and apartheid South Africa successfully pursued ethnic redistribuiton with growth during the heydays of Keynesianism and Fordism and the complexity of such a strategy in the post-Cold War, post-Fordist world of the competition state. He examines the ways in which Malaysia and South Africa have adapted to globalization by becoming competition states and the implication this process has for democratic consolidation. He provides a provocative analysis of particular interest to scholars, students, and researchers involved with development studies, international political economy, and comparative politics.

Japan and the European Union - Domestic Politics and Transnational Relations (Hardcover): Atsuko Abe Japan and the European Union - Domestic Politics and Transnational Relations (Hardcover)
Atsuko Abe
R6,629 Discovery Miles 66 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Japan and the European Union sets out to answer a number of crucial questions on the effect of Japan's international relations upon its internal affairs -- in particular how international issues, and Japan's growing relationship with the European Union, have come to penetrate the political economy and decision-making structure in Japanese industry and legislation. Japan/EU affairs have never been marked by any significant political relations, and until the past twenty years, they have been characterized by a reserved indifference. However, as a result of accelerated political and economic changes in the past decade, the two economic giants have made considerable efforts to nurture bilateral relations largely initiated by trade concerns. The author examines the development of this relationship informed by International Relations perspectives and taking into account the growing dependence of successful bilateral relations on the international political economy. Furthermore, Dr. Abe explains the attempt that has been made to resolve Japanese/EU disputes by way of a Joint Declaration. This includes an examination of the 1991 Automobile Agreement involving Japan, the EC Commission and the Japanese manufacturers; and the Liquor Tax dispute which ran from 1986-1995. Throughout this account, the concerns of the United States, and its impact on this relationship, are fully registered.

Italian Banking and Financial Law: Crisis Management Procedures, Sanctions, Alternative Dispute Resolution Systems and Tax... Italian Banking and Financial Law: Crisis Management Procedures, Sanctions, Alternative Dispute Resolution Systems and Tax Rules (Hardcover)

Sea Lanes and Pipelines - Energy Security in Asia (Hardcover): Bernard D. Cole Sea Lanes and Pipelines - Energy Security in Asia (Hardcover)
Bernard D. Cole
R2,508 Discovery Miles 25 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An unprecedented description of the critical energy situation throughout Asia, this book examines the energy resources, naval forces, and national strategies of the nations of that vast landmass, set against the priorities and resources of the United States. Energy security in Asia is crucial to the continued economic growth and hence the national security of the region's nations. Providing such security requires a combination of naval, political, and economic policies. Despite dramatic news coverage to the contrary, Cole's research reveals that the nations of the region-of which the United States must be counted-are in fact acting more together than apart in striving to ensure the security of scarce energy resources they all require. No issue in today's international environment is more important than energy security. Even the North Korean nuclear development program must be taken as a subset of this subject. As the United States, the United Kingdom, and other nations have done in past decades, the People's Republic of China is striving to establish proprietorship of energy resources throughout their lifecycle, from recovery from the ground to sale in the market place. This important book demonstrates the vacuity of that paradigm, illustrating the multilateral nature of energy security.

Interchange Fee Economics - To Regulate or Not to Regulate? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Jakub Gorka Interchange Fee Economics - To Regulate or Not to Regulate? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Jakub Gorka
R2,628 Discovery Miles 26 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Interchange fees have been the focal point for debate in the card industry, among competition authorities and policy makers, as well as in the economic literature on two-sided markets and on the regulation of market failures. This book offers insight into the economics of interchange fees. First, it explains the nature of two-sided markets/platforms/networks and elaborates on four-party schemes and on the rationale behind interchange fees according to Baxter's model and its later refinements. It also includes the debate about the optimum level of interchange fees and its determination ("tourist test"), and presents the original framework for assessing the impact of interchange fee regulatory reductions for the market participants: consumers, merchants, acquirers, issuers, and card organisations. The framework addresses three areas of concern in reference to the transmission channels of interchange fee reductions (pass-through) and the card scheme domain (triangle: payment organisation, issuer, acquirer). The book discusses the effects of regulatory interchange fee reductions in Australia, USA, Spain, and, most specifically, Poland. It will be of interest to policy makers, card and payments industry practitioners, academics, and students.
