Kevin Jefferys
R1,443 Discovery Miles 14 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sport has a huge social and cultural significance in contemporary Britain. This insightful study provides the first exploration of the causes and consequences of the increased interaction between sport and the state since 1945. Kevin Jefferys sets policy towards sport within the evolving socio-political context of post-war Britain and balances an appreciation of continuity and change from the 'austerity Games' of 1948 through to the multi-billion pound extravaganza of the London 2012 Olympics. Ideal for students, historians, social scientists and sport enthusiasts alike, Sport and Politics in Modern Britain provides the fullest assessment yet of this important topic, bringing sport sharply into focus as a contested domain in public and political debate.

Drawing on research conducted in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, this original and comprehensive book explores the value and meaning of the 'girls' night out' for young women, and its instrumental role in the negotiation of friendships and femininities. Nicholls covers a range of themes, including alcohol consumption, dress, and risk management, providing engaging and timely insights into women's leisure as a site for the negotiation of gendered identities. Religion and the Rise of Sport in England (Hardcover): McLeod Religion and the Rise of Sport in England (Hardcover)
McLeod
R1,128 Discovery Miles 11 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Tells the story of the changing relationship between sport and religion from 1800 to the present day Both religion and sport stir deep emotions, shape identities, and inspire powerful loyalties. They have sometimes been in competition for people's resources of time and money, but can also be mutually supportive. We live in a world where sport seems to be everywhere. Not only is there saturation media coverage but governments extol the benefits of sport for nation and individual, and in 2019 the Church of England appointed a Bishop for Sport. The religious world has not always looked so kindly on sport. In the early nineteenth century, Evangelical Christians led campaigns to ban sports deemed cruel, brutal or disorderly. But from the 1850s Christian and other religious leaders turned from attacking 'bad' sports to promoting 'good' ones. The pace of change accelerated in the 1960s, as commercialization of sport intensified and Sunday sport became established, while the world of religion was transformed by increasing secularization, a resurgent Evangelicalism, and the growth of a multi-faith society. This is the first book to tell this story, and while its principal focus is on Christianity, there is additional coverage of Judaism and Islam, as there is of those - from Victorian sporting gentry to present-day football fans and marathon runners - for whom sport is itself a religion.

Soccer in Brazil (Hardcover): Martin Curi Soccer in Brazil (Hardcover)
Martin Curi
R4,624 Discovery Miles 46 240 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

No other national stereotype in the world is so closely tied with a sport, as Brazil is with football. The five-time world champions have constructed their national identity around this sport. Perhaps for this reason it's no wonder that there are many Brazilian social scientists doing research on this theme. The first part of this volume is dedicated to the history of Brazilian football. The main question is how did football become so popular in the country? It also looks at other interesting historical developments in Brazilian football history up to this day. The second part considers current phenomena, especially the place of Brazilian football in a globalized world: What are the consequences of an extremely commercialized and mediatized sport on a developing country? How does Brazil figure as the main supplying country of football talents? How does the population feel about seeing their players in Europe instead of their own country? Finally, the book will conclude with a critique of a documentary film about a Brazilian national team game in Haiti which was part of the Brazilian army's blue helmet mission. The game was used as a political instrument, revealing the importance of this sport in attaining a political position for Brazil in the world. This book was previously published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.

Coming of Age in Second Life - An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human (Paperback, Revised edition): Tom Boellstorff Coming of Age in Second Life - An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human (Paperback, Revised edition)
Tom Boellstorff; Preface by Tom Boellstorff
R673 R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Save R53 (8%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Millions of people around the world today spend portions of their lives in online virtual worlds. Second Life is one of the largest of these virtual worlds. The residents of Second Life create communities, buy property and build homes, go to concerts, meet in bars, attend weddings and religious services, buy and sell virtual goods and services, find friendship, fall in love--the possibilities are endless, and all encountered through a computer screen. At the time of its initial publication in 2008, Coming of Age in Second Life was the first book of anthropology to examine this thriving alternate universe. Tom Boellstorff conducted more than two years of fieldwork in Second Life, living among and observing its residents in exactly the same way anthropologists traditionally have done to learn about cultures and social groups in the so-called real world. He conducted his research as the avatar "Tom Bukowski," and applied the rigorous methods of anthropology to study many facets of this new frontier of human life, including issues of gender, race, sex, money, conflict and antisocial behavior, the construction of place and time, and the interplay of self and group. Coming of Age in Second Life shows how virtual worlds can change ideas about identity and society. Bringing anthropology into territory never before studied, this book demonstrates that in some ways humans have always been virtual, and that virtual worlds in all their rich complexity build upon a human capacity for culture that is as old as humanity itself. Now with a new preface in which the author places his book in light of the most recent transformations in online culture, Coming of Age in Second Life remains the classic ethnography of virtual worlds.

Sport, Alcohol and Social Inquiry - A Global Cocktail (Hardcover): Sarah Gee Sport, Alcohol and Social Inquiry - A Global Cocktail (Hardcover)
Sarah Gee
R3,065 Discovery Miles 30 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years, the relationship between sport and alcohol has become an increasingly popular topic for study, with many current research projects and publications aligning with a public health or medical focus. This volume prioritizes social inquiry and an emphasis on the sociological study of sport and alcohol to help (re)shape the terms of ongoing debates on this topic. Both emerging and expert scholars capture the contested terrain of the sport-alcohol nexus, exploring a range of issues and controversies with a specific focus on promotional culture, policy legislation/regulation, and identity politics. Chapters discuss the intricate social connections of what has become an entrenched, naturalized and global culture of alcohol promotion and consumption within sport. This volume is intentionally global in focus (with geographical regions represented by both chapter topics as well as contributors) and each chapter adds a truly valuable 'spirit' to making sense of the complex relationship between sport and alcohol.

Sport and Social Exclusion - Second edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): Tess Kay Sport and Social Exclusion - Second edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Tess Kay; Foreword by Allan Patmore; Michael Collins, Mike Collins
R1,634 Discovery Miles 16 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Tackling social exclusion should be a central aim of any civilised social policy. In this meticulously revised and updated new edition of his groundbreaking study, Sport and Social Exclusion, Mike Collins has assembled a vast array of new evidence from a range of global sources to demonstrate how the effects of social exclusion are as evident in sport as they are in any area of society. The book uses sport as an important sphere for critical reflection on existing social policy and explores sport's role as a source of initiatives for tackling exclusion. It examines key topics such as: * What is meant by 'social exclusion' * How social exclusion affects citizenship and the chance to play sport * How exclusion from sport is linked to poverty, class, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, and involvement in youth delinquency, and living in towns or countryside * How exclusion is linked to concepts of personal and communal social capital. It uses four revised and five new major case studies as detailed illustrations, notably Be Active, Birmingham, the national PE and Youth/School Sport strategy, Positive Futures and Street Games. . Sport and Social Exclusion features a wealth of original research data, including new and previously unpublished material, as well as important new studies of social exclusion policy and practice in the UK and elsewhere. This revised edition surveys all the most important changes in the policy landscape since first publication in 2002 and explores the likely impact of the London Olympic Games on sport policy in the UK. The book concludes with some typically forthright commendations and critiques from the author regarding the success of existing policies and the best way to tackle exclusion from sport and society in the future. By relating current policy to new research the book provides an essential guidebook for students, academics and policy makers working in sport policy and development."
