Our national attention is firmly focused on the growing opioid crises. We know the problem. But what is the solution for the 100 million Americans living with chronic pain? In Living beyond Pain, a physician and a therapist offer a whole person approach to pain management, addressing the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of pain and providing alternative strategies that don't rely on opioids. Through education, pain triumph stories, daily guided cognitive activity, and as-needed pain rescue techniques, readers will reprogram their neurologic pathways, increase functioning, and experience improvement in their symptoms. For anyone suffering from pain or suffering alongside someone who is, this book offers real, research-based hope that there are better days ahead.
An expert explores the nature of pain: why it hurts and why some pain is good and some pain is bad. If you touch something hot, it hurts. You snatch your hand away from the hot thing immediately. Obviously. But what is really happening, biologically-and emotionally? In Understanding Pain, Fernando Cervero explores the mechanisms and the meaning of pain. You touch something hot and your brain triggers a reflex action that causes you to withdraw your hand, protecting you from injury. That kind of pain, Cervero explains, is actually good for us; it acts as an alarm that warns us of danger and keeps us away from harm. But, Cervero tells us, not all pain is good for you. There is another kind of pain that is more like a curse: chronic pain that is not related to injury. This is the kind of pain that fills pain clinics and makes life miserable. Cervero describes current research into the mysteries of chronic pain and efforts to develop more effective treatments. Cervero reminds us that pain is the most common reason for people to seek medical attention, but that it remains a biological enigma. It is protective, but not always. Its effects are not only sensory but also emotional. There is no way to measure it objectively, no test that comes back positive for pain; the only way a medical professional can gauge pain is by listening to the patient's description of it. The idea of pain as a test of character or a punishment to be borne is changing; prevention and treatment of pain are increasingly important to researchers, clinicians, and patients. Cervero's account brings us closer to understanding the meaning of pain.

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) has come a long way since early experiments in animals where it was found to induce a sleep-like state and from its use in general anaesthesia in human subjects. Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate: Pharmacological and Functional Aspects brings together the combined expertise of many of the leading authorities on the biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology of GHB in the central nervous system. Each chapter is an in-depth review of the field and the book itself will appeal to all neurobiologists interested in neurotransmitter mechanisms, as well as to clinicians and other health-care workers interested in this fascinating chemical.
This is the most comprehensive overview available anywhere on the broad, multi-faceted and complex topic of pain - and the rapidly evolving scientific and medical disciplines that seek to understand, assess and treat pain. The Encyclopedia of Pain includes more than 3,000 entries and provides clear, detailed and up-to-date coverage of the current state of research, and treatment of pain. In addition, detailed essays provide in-depth information on all aspects of nociception and pain, including substrates, causes, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs, diagnoses and treatment. A thousand color figures enhance understanding of this too-little-understood topic. Solidly structured and inclusive, this three-volume reference is an invaluable tool for clinical scientists and practitioners in academia, health care and industry, as well as students, teachers and interested laypersons.
Janet L. Abrahm argues that all causes of suffering experienced by people with cancer, be they physical, psychological, social, or spiritual, should be treated at all stages: at diagnosis, during curative therapy, in the event that cancer recurs, and during the final months. In the second edition of this symptom-oriented guide, she provides primary care physicians, advanced practice nurses, internists and oncologists with detailed information and advice for alleviating the stress and pain of patients and family members alike. The new edition includes the latest information on patient and family communication and counseling, on medical, surgical, and complementary and alternative treatments for symptoms caused by cancer and cancer treatments, and on caring for patients in the last days and their bereaved families. Updated case histories, medication tables, Practice Points, and bibliographies provide clinicians with the information they need to treat their cancer patients effectively and compassionately.
Children who have been abused or traumatized but cannot talk about their experiences either because they have pledged their silence or because they don't know the words subconsciously call for help through their art. With step-by-step instruction, self-tests, case examples, and specially designed scoring forms, the authors demonstrate how to screen children's drawings for indications of trauma. Color and b&w illus.
Dr. Quill put his career in jeopardy when he published an article in the New England Medical Journal admitting to assisting a terminally ill patient in suicide by prescribing pills for her and letting her know--at her request--how to take a lethal dose. Now he reveals the options that people have when facing life-threatening illnesses. Includes stories of his patients and many others.
It deals not only with traditional aspects of therapy with these challenging patients, but also with special problems that may arise, including aggression and impulsivity, alcohol and drug abuse, chronic pain, sex and relationships, and vocational and forensic issues.
"If one were to ask which aspect of anesthesia and operating room care had changed most dramatically in the past decade, the overwhelming majority would opt for pediatric anesthesia. It is finally time to dispel the myths surrounding anesthesia and children." -- from "Anesthesia and Pain Management for the Pediatrician" Until recently, preoperative preparation of a child scheduled for surgery was the uncontested domain of the anesthesiologist. Now much of this responsibility is being shifted to the primary care physician, who is frequently called upon to provide "medical clearance" for the child before surgery in addition to providing emotional support to the child and parents, helping them understand what they will experience in the operating room. Providing appropriate medical clearance means avoiding disappointment, emotional trauma, and time lost from busy schedules. Whether for a well child, a child with asthma or another chronic disease, or a child with an acute or recent respiratory infection, the primary care provider will find in this book detailed information about what is involved in providing medical clearance for anesthesia. In addition, the primary care physician will find up-to-date information about new, less painful techniques for administering anesthesia to children, as well as specific information about pain prevention and relief and techniques for administering sedatives and analgesics in the office setting. In "Anesthesia and Pain Management for the Pediatrician," a group of distinguished pediatric anesthesiologists provide comprehensive, up-to-date information about pediatric anesthesia for medical care providers involved in preparing child patients--and their families--for surgical procedures. The authors describe in detail the variety of considerations involved in taking a child to the operating room and discuss medical issues important in pre-operative pediatric consultation as well as: Anesthetic agents and induction and monitoring techniques New NPO guidelines What it really means to "clear" a child for anesthesia Realistic risks and complications of anesthesia Advances in pediatric pain management The importance of avoiding trauma in the pediatric patient, and how the surgical team detraumatizes the experience The role of the parent in the operating room How to answer the questions most frequently asked by parents and children facing anesthesia and surgery This information will help pediatricians and family physicians provide improved patient care in an era of managed care. The text is illustrated with photographs of children and families in the operating room, and of induction techniques, and is enhanced with 52 tables of medications, equipment, assessment tools, and guidelines for treatment.
