Process Modelling and Landform Evolution (Paperback, 1999 ed.): Stefan Hergarten, Horst J. Neugebauer Process Modelling and Landform Evolution (Paperback, 1999 ed.)
Stefan Hergarten, Horst J. Neugebauer
R5,244 Discovery Miles 52 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents approaches to landscape modelling not only from geography but also from various related disciplines, especially from applied mathematics, computer science, and geophysics. New methods of terrain representation, analysis and classification are presented as well as short- and long-term process models. The intention of the book is not to give a complete overview of these broad and complex topics, but to stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation and to encourage scientists to consider the ideas of related disciplines.

Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology (Hardcover, 3rd Revised edition): Anthony R. Philpotts, Jay J. Ague Principles of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology (Hardcover, 3rd Revised edition)
Anthony R. Philpotts, Jay J. Ague
R2,222 Discovery Miles 22 220 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Building upon the award-winning second edition, this comprehensive textbook provides a fundamental understanding of the formative processes of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Encouraging a deeper comprehension of the subject by explaining the petrologic principles, and assuming knowledge of only introductory college-level courses in physics, chemistry, and calculus, it lucidly outlines mathematical derivations fully and at an elementary level, making this the ideal resource for intermediate and advanced courses in igneous and metamorphic petrology. With over 500 illustrations, many in color, this revised edition contains valuable new material and strengthened pedagogy, including boxed mathematical derivations allowing for a more accessible explanation of concepts, and more qualitative end-of-chapter questions to encourage discussion. With a new introductory chapter outlining the "bigger picture," this fully updated resource will guide students to an even greater mastery of petrology.

The Sound of the Sea - Seashells and the Fate of the Oceans (Paperback): Cynthia Barnett The Sound of the Sea - Seashells and the Fate of the Oceans (Paperback)
Cynthia Barnett
R444 R418 Discovery Miles 4 180 Save R26 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Seashells have been the most coveted and collected of nature's creations since the dawn of humanity. They were money before coins, jewellry before gems, art before canvas. In The Sound of the Sea, acclaimed environmental author Cynthia Barnett blends cultural history and science to trace our long love affair with seashells and the hidden lives of the mollusks that make them. Spiralling out from the great cities of shell that once rose in North America to the warming waters of the Maldives and the slave castles of Ghana, Barnett has created an unforgettable account of the world's most iconic seashells. She begins with their childhood wonder, unwinds surprising histories like the origin of Shell Oil as a family business importing exotic shells, and charts what shells and the soft animals that build them are telling scientists about our warming, acidifying seas. From the eerie calls of early shell trumpets to the evolutionary miracle of spines and spires and the modern science of carbon capture inspired by shell, Barnett circles to her central point of listening to nature's wisdom-and acting on what seashells have to say about taking care of each other and our world.

The Making of the Scottish Rural Landscape (Hardcover, New Ed): David Turnock The Making of the Scottish Rural Landscape (Hardcover, New Ed)
David Turnock
R4,503 Discovery Miles 45 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book looks at the evolution of rural settlement in Scotland from the Mesolithic period through to the improving movement of the 18th and 19th centuries. The main emphasis is on changes in society and technology, but the book also considers how the development of the physical landscape laid the foundation for such changes. The author strikes a balance between general perspectives (including relevant contextual materials such as the political structures) and local studies, with much emphasis on individual sites. Lack of documentation prior to the 10th century places particular importance on the archaeological evidence, but imaginative interpretation of this evidence has led to a major re-evaluation. Ideas emphasizing continuity of settlement and local adaptation are replacing older 'invasionist' theories emphasizing Celtic war lords and broch-building pirates.

Land on Fire (Hardcover): Gary Ferguson Land on Fire (Hardcover)
Gary Ferguson
R682 Discovery Miles 6 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"This comprehensive book offers a fascinating overview of how those fires are fought, and some conversation-starters for how we might reimagine our relationship with the woods." --Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet Wildfire season is burning longer and hotter, affecting more and more people, especially in the west. Land on Fire explores the fascinating science behind this phenomenon and the ongoing research to find a solution. This gripping narrative details how years of fire suppression and chronic drought have combined to make the situation so dire. Award-winning nature writer Gary Ferguson brings to life the extraordinary efforts of those responsible for fighting wildfires, and deftly explains how nature reacts in the aftermath of flames. Dramatic photographs reveal the terror and beauty of fire, as well as the staggering effect it has on the landscape.

Ole E. Barndorff-Nielsen; Edited by (associates) C. Christiansen, J. C. R. Hunt; Edited by Brian B Willetts; Edited by (associates) K. Hutter, …
R1,423 Discovery Miles 14 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Wind erosion has such a pervasive influence on environmental and agricultural matters that academic interest in it has been continuous for several decades. However, there has been a tendency for the resulting publications to be scattered widely in the scientific litera ture and consequently to provide a less coherent resource than might otherwise be hoped for. In particular, cross-reference between the literature on desert and coastal morphology, on the deterioration of wind affected soils, and on the process mechanics of the grain/air flow system has been disappointing. A successful workshop on "The Physics of Blown Sand," held in Aarhus in 1985, took a decisive step in collecting a research community with interests spanning geomorphology and grain/wind process mechanics. The identification of that Community was reinforced by the Binghampton Symposium on Aeolian Geomorphology in 1986 and has been fruitful in the development of a number of international collaborations. The objectives of the pre sent workshop, which was supported by a grant from the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, were to take stock of the progress in the five years to 1990 and to extend the scope of the community to include soil deterioration (and dust release) and those beach processes which link with aeolian activity on the coast."

Michael Collie
R2,622 Discovery Miles 26 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The previously unpublished correspondence of T.H.Huxley with Rev. George Gordon is an important new addition to the literature on Huxley and Victorian science. The correspondence is self-contained and wholely scientific, concerning the unexpected discovery of reptilian fossils and footprints near Elgin, and relates to a most important aspect of Huxley's career: defining the relationship between geology and palaentology. The letters are complemented by an incisive analysis of Huxley's work as a palaentologist and the development of his views on evolution.
