George Hoppendale
R438 Discovery Miles 4 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Growing up with animals, I have learnt so much about taking care of them. The most amazing thing about pets is the fact that they are so unconditional and so grateful for every small act of kindness. It is rather humbling to see how warm hearted animals can actually be. I would have never had the wonderful opportunity of dealing with tortoises and other animals, if it had not been for my family, especially my father. Animals were the centre of all our activities when I grew up. There was not a single day that did not begin with a discussion about our pets. What to feed them? What is the most nutritious thing to feed them? These were common dinner table conversations in our house. So, needless to say, I have had a lot of practical training and experience with respect to taking care of different breeds of animals. Today, I am in a very privileged place where I can share this information with pet lovers across the globe. I love Emily, my Russian Tortoise. In this book, I've explained my experience with my tortoise. I've included all these topics and more: pros and cons, keeping, daily care, costs, diet, breeding, cages, lightning, heating, interacting and where to buy. I explain all aspects of keeping a Russian Tortoise as a pet to make sure that your tortoise will be has happy as mine Mine is funny and makes me laugh, I hope yours will be funny too

R1,082 Discovery Miles 10 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

FINALLY IT'S A REALITY....LOW MAINTENANCE CRICKET BREEDING . Have you ever wondered why people breed crickets initially, then 98% give up after just 3-6 months using traditional techniques. The answer is simple....breeding crickets is easy, the hard bit is continuing with a laborious maintenance schedule (daily spraying, moving crickets between containers, cleaning, feeding etc.). To complete the failure cycle, most colonies then collapse from disease and pests due to lack of maintenance... This is why most people breed cockroaches and mealworms.

WHY OUR LOW MAINTENANCE METHODS ARE VERY DIFFERERENT Thankfully our insect breeding systems are very different... after more than a decade of commercial production and experimentation, we have pioneered revolutionary and unique techniques that have slashed maintenance, eliminated offensive odor and doubled production. How would you like automated systems that;

Needs no active management; Collects waste for you; Requires only 5 minutes maintenance every 7-10 days (less time than standing in line at the pet store) Food/ water dispensers that attends to your insects for 14 days or more; Systems so productive that the average family will be able to feed 4-12 bearded dragons (depending of insect feeding rate) just from their scrap vegetables; That's over $1400 each year completely free....or even better this could be income Best of all they are easy to build, and most materials are made from recycled materials or from your hardware. Breeding your own feeder insects has never been easier with the world's most comprehensive and well researched feeder insects guides (with hundreds of photos), complementary Skype video training along with Email support (full details on our website www.zegaenterprises.com.au).

HOW DO OUR SYSTEMS WORK... In a nut shell, we have created two separate zones within a single container (conventional techniques require up to 6 separate containers); one high humidity area ideal for breeding; and a lower humidity area which is required for housing and food/water. We have also developed a unique detritus collection system which collects the waste and prevents contamination of breeding substrate and food areas. This makes cleaning a breeze, eliminates odours and disease, increases egg viability and significantly increases cricket production. We have water and food dispersers which do the feeds for you, even when your on holidays Unlike conventional techniques which need to be actively managed (daily spraying, and moving pinheads to new containers) our systems run themselves ?. And our cockroach breeding systems are equally unique at reducing maintenance and smells (also available on Amazon).

THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE GUIDES... This manual sets the benchmark for cricket production and contains more than 164 pages (240 colour photos) that cover's every aspect of private and commercial production in detail. That's more than twice the size of any other book on the market. We have overhauled every aspect of cricket and cockroach production...

container design breeding food and water requirements making food and water dispensers heating/storage maintenance/pest management, cleaning grading/selling lots and lots more.

COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION EXPERIENCE...Turn an Expense Into Income We have bred crickets and cockroaches commercially for 10 years to wildlife parks, zoos, pet stores, wildlife rescue clubs, large scale reptile keepers and the general public.... and we are happy to pass on our commercial tips to you. This is the only guide that has sufficient detail and experience to be used for private and commercial cricket/cockroach production.

The Amateur Naturalist (and Exotic Petkeeper) #7 (Paperback): Jonathan Downes The Amateur Naturalist (and Exotic Petkeeper) #7 (Paperback)
Jonathan Downes
R317 Discovery Miles 3 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For 100 years, from the mid-19th Century, natural history was the premier British hobby. Over the last 50 years it has declined in popularity for a number of reasons, most notably that killing living creatures for a hobby is quite rightly no longer seen as ethical. With the technological advances of the 21st Century, however, everything has changed. With a digital camera one can have a butterfly collection for example, and with the advent of cheap air travel, places once only accessible by the Gerald Durrells of this world, can be visited by everybody. Suddenly, the amateur naturalist can come into his, or her, own, and there has never been a better time for people to get involved. Amateur naturalists across the world are carrying out valuable research, and participating in essential breeding programmes. If you are interested, this magazine is for you.

Initially coming out four times a year, the magazine will feature authoritative articles on keeping herps and inverts, the more unusual fish, and even exotic mammals and birds. However, although we intend to be the definitive magazine for those who believe in the responsible keeping of exotic pets, we want to do more than that.

Snakes - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (Paperback): Richard A Seigel, Joseph T. Collins, Susan S Novak Snakes - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (Paperback)
Richard A Seigel, Joseph T. Collins, Susan S Novak
R1,765 Discovery Miles 17 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, first published in 1987 and here reprinted with a new foreword by the authors has become a classic in the field of herpetology. In ecological and evolutionary research snakes occupy a unique niche. Studies of their adaptations and life histories have broad applications for the most basic questions in biology. This book fills the need for an up-to-date text/reference in the growing field of snake ecology and evolutionary biology. Here, in one volume is an extensive review of the biology of these fascinating reptiles, including topics such as zoogeography, fossil history, systematics, foraging and reproduction. With contributions from many leading herpetologists, the work is divided into sections on Systematics and Morphology, Methods and Techniques and Life History and Ecology. Each section summarizes what is known about these major fields of snake biology. This book serves the needs of those actively involved in research as well as the amateur naturalist and the beginning student. Dr. Richard A. Seigel became interested in herpetology while an undergraduate at Rutgers University, where he received his B.A. in Zoology and Physiology in 1977. He continued his work with amphibians and reptiles while getting his M.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Central Florida in 1979 and his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1984. He is currently Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University in Maryland. Dr. Siegel's primary research interests are in the population ecology and conservation biology of amphibians and reptiles. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and has co-authored or edited four texts on the ecology and biology of snakes. From 1993-2000, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Herpetology, the largest international publication in its field. Joseph T. Collins has written more than 200 articles on reptiles, amphibians, and fishes throughout North America and twenty-three books, including: Peterson Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of Eastern and Central North America Third Edition (with Roger Conant), Amphibians and Reptiles in Kansas Third Edition (with photographs by Suzanne L. Collins), Natural Kansas, An Illustrated Guide to Endangered or Threatened Species in Kansas, (with Suzanne L. Collins, Jerry Horak, Dan Mulhern, William H. Busby, Craig C. Freeman, and Gary Wallace), A Key to Amphibians and Reptiles of the Continental United States and Canada (with Robert Powell and Errol D. Hooper, Jr.). In 1978, Collins served as president of the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, the leading international professional society in that field, as president of the Kansas Association of Biology Teachers (1980-1981) and as president of the Kansas Herpetological Society. He was a distinguished delegate to the First World Congress of Herpetology at Canterbury, England in 1989, and was made a Distinguished Life Member of the Kansas Herpetological Society in 1998. Susan S. Novak, a native of Chicago, has been a Lawrence, Kansas, resident since 1986. Novak has been an editor of scientific/technical, scholarly, and popular work for twenty years, working formerly as the editor at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. She joined the staff of the Kansas State Historical Society in 1993, where she has since served as the managing editor of Kansas Heritage magazine and the associate editor of Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains, providing regular departments, main articles, photographs, book reviews, and layout and design work.
