Sentient - What Animals Reveal About Our Senses (Paperback): Jackie Higgins Sentient - What Animals Reveal About Our Senses (Paperback)
Jackie Higgins 1
R457 Discovery Miles 4 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sentient assembles a menagerie of zoological creatures – from land, air, sea and all four corners of the globe – to understand what it means to be human. Through their eyes, ears, skins, tongues and noses, the furred, finned and feathered reveal how we sense and make sense of the world, as well as the untold scientific revolution stirring in the field of human perception.

The harlequin mantis shrimp can throw a punch that can fracture aquarium walls but, more importantly, it has the ability to see a vast range of colours. The ears of the great grey owl have such unparalleled range and sensitivity that they can hear twenty decibels lower than the human ear. The star-nosed mole barely fills a human hand, seldom ventures above ground and poses little threat unless you are an earthworm, but its miraculous nose allows it to catch those worms at astonishing speed – as little as one hundred and twenty milliseconds. Here, too, we meet the four-eyed spookfish and its dark vision; the vampire bat and its remarkable powers of touch; the bloodhound and its hundreds of millions of scent receptors, as well as the bar-tailed godwit, the common octopus, giant peacocks, cheetahs and golden orb-weaving spiders. Each of these extraordinary creatures illustrates the sensory powers that lie dormant within us.

In this captivating book, Jackie Higgins explores this evolutionary heritage and, in doing so, enables us to subconsciously engage with the world in ways we never knew possible.

Pentecostals, Proselytization, and Anti-Christian Violence in Contemporary India (Hardcover): Chad M. Bauman Pentecostals, Proselytization, and Anti-Christian Violence in Contemporary India (Hardcover)
Chad M. Bauman
R3,640 Discovery Miles 36 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Every year, there are several hundred attacks on India's Christians. These attacks are carried out by violent anti-minority activists, many of them provoked by what they perceive to be Christians' propensity for aggressive proselytization, and/or by rumored or real conversions to the faith. In this violence, Pentecostal Christians are disproportionately targeted. Bauman finds that the violence against Pentecostals and Pentecostalized Evangelicals in India is not just a matter of current social, cultural, political, and interreligious dynamics internal to India, but is rather related to identifiable historical trends, as well as to historical and contemporary transnational flows of people, power, and ideas. Based on extensive interviews and ethnographic work, and drawing upon the vast scholarly literature on interreligious violence, Hindu nationalism, and Christianity in India, this volume accounts for this disproportionate targeting through a detailed analysis of Indian Christian history, contemporary Indian politics, Indian social and cultural characteristics, and Pentecostal belief and practice. While some of the factors in the targeting of Pentecostals are obvious and expected (e.g., their relatively greater evangelical assertiveness), other significant factors are less acknowledged and more surprising, among them the marginalization of Pentecostals by "mainstream" Christians, the social location of Pentecostal Christians, and transnational flows of missionary personnel, theories, and funds.

Violence - A Modern Obsession (Paperback): Richard Bessel Violence - A Modern Obsession (Paperback)
Richard Bessel 1
R296 R223 Discovery Miles 2 230 Save R73 (25%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

After a century that has been described as the most violent in the history of humanity, Professor Richard Bessel has written an intelligent and fascinating book on the history of our violent world and how we have become obsessed about violence. He critiques the great themes of modern history from revolutionary upheavals around the globe, to the two world wars and the murder of the European Jews, to the great purges and, more recently, terrorism. Violence, it seems, is on everyone's mind. It constantly is in the news; it has given rise to an enormous historical, sociological, and philosophical literature; it occupies a prominent place in popular entertainment; and it is regarded as one of the fundamental problems affecting social, political and interpersonal relations. Bessel sheds light on this phenomenon and how our sensitivity towards violence has grown and has affected the ways in which we understand the world around us - in terms of religious faith, politics, military confrontation, the role of the state, as well as of interpersonal and intimate relations. He critiques our modern day relationship with violence and how despite its continuing and inevitable nature, we have become more committed to limiting and suppressing it. Both historically questioning and intensely evocative of the most vicious and brutal violence enacted by mankind, this book shows how the place of violence in the modern world presents a number of paradoxes and how it is an inescapable theme in human history.

Quantum Dynamic Homeostasis. So Darwin and then secular universities around the world for our teleonomic developments, new technologies. Any chances of a maintaining a civil order whilst opening up to diverse opinionsa has to change gear from sapiens to Conatus and embrace the teleonomics of the modern synthesis [1958]. Presenting an up-to-date analysis of the role played by equality in blending the economic and social elements of EU legal integration, Equality and Non-Discrimination in the EU will be an important read for scholars and students of EU and constitutional law, as well as practitioners and EU officials.

Young Child In Context - A Psycho-Social Perspective (Paperback, Revised 2nd Edition): Marike de Witt Young Child In Context - A Psycho-Social Perspective (Paperback, Revised 2nd Edition)
Marike de Witt
R696 Discovery Miles 6 960 Ships in 8 - 11 working days

Every child constantly changes and undergoes processes of emotional, cognitive, normative and physical development. At each age and stage of development children need continued support and assurance from adults in order to assimilate the effects of these changes. The pace of the child's development and its outcome are determined by both genetic factors and the influence of the environment. The young child in context: a psycho-social perspective examines the complex yet clearly defined phases in child development and suggests how best to encourage and assist children through the formative first nine years of their lives. In the revised second edition, the case is put more strongly that the context of each child is of crucial importance and that stimulation is essential in enabling the child to reach his or her full potential. The young child in context follows two different perspectives on the development of the young child: psychological and social-educational. Each chapter provides definitions of concepts, self-test questions, field assignments, additional assignments for revision and case studies related to the topics covered. Issues are discussed within a South African context.

Norms, Gender and Corruption - Understanding the Nexus (Hardcover): Ina Kubbe, Ortrun Merkle Norms, Gender and Corruption - Understanding the Nexus (Hardcover)
Ina Kubbe, Ortrun Merkle
R3,358 Discovery Miles 33 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Building upon the body of existing literature that has established the importance of norms in understanding why genders interact with social phenomena differently, and how gender plays a role in most aspects of corruption, this cutting-edge book expands the fields to explore the nexus between norms, gender and corruption. Making a timely and innovative contribution to all three streams of research, the book dives deeper into the role of norms in understanding the relationship between gender and corruption. An international, multidisciplinary group of experts combine global qualitative, in-depth case studies with large scale quantitative analysis to demonstrate the complementary use of different methods in the fields of gender, norms and corruption. Considering gendered differences in attitudes towards, and experiences of, corruption, the chapters examine political and institutional participation in corruption, looking closely at gender representation, stereotypes, and norms-based barriers. Analysing norms from different perspectives, with the main focus on social norms, this forward-thinking book makes a convincing case for why norms should be included in the research agenda on gender and corruption. Interdisciplinary in scope, this insightful book will prove invaluable to students and scholars of gender politics, social policy and sociology, and law, regulation and governance. It will also prove a useful reference guide to policymakers concerned with the relationship between gender and corruption.

Maria's Keepers - One Woman's Escape From The Jehovah's Witnesses Church In South Africa (Paperback): Sam Human Maria's Keepers - One Woman's Escape From The Jehovah's Witnesses Church In South Africa (Paperback)

Maria is a young woman raised as a Jehovah’s Witness in South Africa, and this book documents her experiences of gender victimisation, sexual abuse and cover-ups within the church, as well as her eventual ‘escape’ from its doctrines and control. Maria’s freedom came at a price, however – she can never see her mother and sister again.

A worldwide, Christian-based religious group that professes an unparalleled dedication to Jehovah (God), the Jehovah’s Witnesses have a strong sense of community and appear to embrace a disciplined yet loving way of life with the promise of eternal salvation for those who follow the way of Jehovah. It is a seemingly benign religious movement, claiming to be politically neutral, racially and ethnically transcendent, with a membership of eight million people worldwide. Yet, at its core, many former Witnesses claim that it is a fear-based doomsday cult that considers itself above all other belief systems.

Allegations of secular, cultish behaviour, homophobia, money laundering, brainwashing and countless accusations of institutionalised sexual abuse abound. It seems that membership is managed and retained mostly by way of information control and manipulation, extending to the shunning of higher education and preaching their own version of the Bible.

Entering the church is easy, but leaving it can be a matter of life or death, as Maria and countless others discovered...
