Youth, Diversity and Employment - Comparative Perspectives on Labour Market Policies (Hardcover): Rune Halvorsen, Bjorn Hvinden Youth, Diversity and Employment - Comparative Perspectives on Labour Market Policies (Hardcover)
Rune Halvorsen, Bjorn Hvinden
R3,210 Discovery Miles 32 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The challenge of including youth in the labour market is a problem which many European countries are facing. Examining the transition from education to employment, Youth, Diversity and Employment combines insights from law and the social sciences to link the challenges and specific barriers facing young and vulnerable people today. Based on original research, this book presents ways in which social protection policies in Europe can utilise the synergy between redistribution and regulations to combat economic inactivity and exclusion of young people. Drawing on the experiences of Nordic countries, which represent cases of high theoretical and political relevance, and systematically examining the significance of social regulation on the employment opportunities for young adults, this book develops an original approach to social protection policies. This book focuses on ways to strengthen the demand for the work capacity of European youth, identifying principles which will make the best progress in policy making to assist youth transitions into work. Arguing that gender, ethnicity, and disability are increasingly important factors to consider, chapters reveal how to ensure that the full use of skills that young adults have can be brought to the workforce effectively. This book will be a valuable tool for students and scholars of social policy, sociology, employment and human rights law, and cultural studies, as well as for researchers, who will find the analytical framework and new data useful for future research into youth transitions, policy, and social protection policies. Contributors include: O.M. Arnardottir, O. Backman, R. Halvorsen, M.J. Hotvedt, B. Hvinden, C. Hyggen, V. Jakobsen, K. Jokumsen, L. Kolouh-Soederlund, S. Kuivalainen, T. Lorentzen, S. Niknami, K. God in a Nutshell - a short guide to the big question (Paperback): Rex Andrews God in a Nutshell - a short guide to the big question (Paperback)

R324 Discovery Miles 3 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What have Atheists, Christians and Muslims and all other categories in the human race got in common? Why - despite our shared humanity - do so many of us get involved in clashes about religion? And why do some of us even fight and kill each other? What do you understand by the world 'God'? Are humans the creatures of God or is 'God' the invention of mankind? How can we make sense of 'God' in a suffering world? And finally, why do we need to talk and listen to each other. The author considers these and many other questions posed by the menacing social and political breakdown in our fragile world 'community'.

Breaking into the Russian market has always been a challenging task, particularly for Western organisations, and personal networks play a crucial role in achieving this. However, personal networks that exist in Russian business remain a mystery. The aim of this book is to address the role of informal relations and trust in Russian society and business. Our findings provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between Russian business and personal relations, thus helping foreign practitioners and investors to enter the Russian market and develop strong business-stakeholder relationships. With the intention not to criticise or dress up the image of Russia but to provide coherent analysis and discussion on how things work in Russia or describe "the rules of the relationships game", this book discussed ten personal networks existing in Russian society and business, nature and structure of relations, local social norms and codes, trust development process, knowledge and information sharing, entry and exit rules, and provides practical suggestions. This book is essential for anybody intending to do business in Russia and particularly suitable for practitioners, investors, researchers and business students.

R3,553 Discovery Miles 35 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Providing an integrated and multi-level analysis of the impacts of COVID-19 on people, place, economies and policies, across the globe, this timely book explores how the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic combines failure with success. It focuses on exploring rapid adaptation and improvisation by individuals, organisations and governments as they attempted to minimise and mitigate the socio-economic and health impacts of the pandemic. Chapters highlight the importance of place and local contexts in understanding its impacts in different settings including Europe, Canada, North America, South Korea, South Africa and Lebanon. In doing so, the book develops a pandemic preparedness, responsiveness and recovery research framework and intends to inform post-pandemic policy development and research. This is an important book for geography, social policy, politics, urban studies, planning and business and management researchers and students, particularly those focusing on crisis management and risk and resilience. Jolanta Aidukaite, Sven E.O. Hort, Stein Kuhnle
R3,369 Discovery Miles 33 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This comprehensive and innovative book demonstrates the dynamics of welfare policies in different socioeconomic settings by providing comparative analyses of the Baltic and Nordic welfare state systems. The book contributes to finding and reflecting upon innovative solutions to common challenges in European welfare states. Challenging conventional welfare state research, the authors compare the Nordic countries with the welfare states of the market-oriented democracies of the Baltic area, discussing welfare state theories, family policy regimes and welfare state models. Top international contributors provide a better understanding of the complex inequalities that families and individuals are facing in the 21st century, and cover important topics such as poverty, social insurance and family policy in the Nordic and Baltic areas. Challenges to the Welfare State will be of great interest to social policy scholars and policy makers, particularly those with an interest in the Baltic and Nordic countries. It will also be a welcome addition to the literature for students interested in family policy and pension protection reforms, and those with a general interest in the contemporary welfare state studies in Europe.

Faith in Dark Places (Paperback, New Ed): David Rhodes Faith in Dark Places (Paperback, New Ed)
David Rhodes
R317 Discovery Miles 3 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What meaning does my life have? What hope is there for the Church? How can I see beyond the media hype and false images I am bombarded with every day? Where can I find God in all this noise and turmoil? Combining moving stories from the inner city with a fresh approach to the Gospel, Faith in Dark Places explores the revolutionary idea that the good news of God's love is being spoken to a tired and damaged world by those rejected as worthless: the homeless and the poor. This radically revised edition, incorporating powerful new insights and reflections, draws on recent theological research and the author's own experience of urban poverty. It examines key biblical texts, such as the Lord's Prayer as a prayer for the poor (in particular the implications of kingdom, bread and trespasses); the Magnificat; and the causes of the crucifixion.

The Enabled Life - Christianity in a Disabling World (Paperback): Roy McCloughry The Enabled Life - Christianity in a Disabling World (Paperback)
Roy McCloughry
R345 Discovery Miles 3 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Some people have called epilepsy the disability towards which Christianity has been most antagonistic, partly because of the Church's tendency to attribute demon possession to the condition. Drawing on the very latest thinking in this area, Roy McCloughry, who is committed to supporting the increasing participation of people with disabilities in Christian communities and in society at large, reveals how people's lives are still being blighted by such attitudes, though there is much to celebrate too. This engaging book aims to encourage people to become involved with people with disabilities, as friendship is one of keys to breaking down the barriers which lead to stereotypes and fear.

Populism and Corruption - The Other Side of the Coin (Hardcover): Jonathan Mendilow, Eric Phelippeau Populism and Corruption - The Other Side of the Coin (Hardcover)
Jonathan Mendilow, Eric Phelippeau
R3,359 Discovery Miles 33 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This timely book offers an in-depth analysis of the intersection between populism and corruption, addressing phenomena that have been, so far, largely treated separately. Bringing together two dynamic and well-established fields of study, it proposes a theoretical framework for the study of populism and corruption in order to update our understanding of specific forms of each in a variety of socio-political settings. International contributors consider the simultaneous growth of populist rhetoric and political corruption, suggesting systematic methods for analysing the interconnection between them. Chapters further examine the effects of socio-political and historical contexts, outlining histories of political scandals and anti-corruption crusades. Taking a cross-national perspective, the book provides case study analyses of the corruption-populism intersection under diverse political systems including Brazil, France, Israel, Mexico and the USA. Raising critical questions for future research into the connections between the fields, Populism and Corruption offers crucial insights for scholars, researchers and students of political science, sociology and law, particularly those interested in contemporary populist movements. It will also benefit practitioners hoping to act on recent trends in political organizing and policymakers eager to combat political corruption.

Corporatism since the Great Recession - Challenges to Tripartite Relations in Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria (Hardcover):... Corporatism since the Great Recession - Challenges to Tripartite Relations in Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria (Hardcover)
Mikkel Mailand
R2,577 Discovery Miles 25 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This illuminating book considers the roles of social partners in regulating work and welfare through corporatist arrangements in three countries - all of which have strong traditions for social partner involvement. In the comparative study of Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria, Mikkel Mailand illustrates how the frequency of tripartite agreements has either been stable or has increased since the Great Recession of 2008, in spite of challenges from trade unions' loss of power and political developments. He therefore demonstrates that social partners are still strong enough to be included in corporatist arrangements. Moreover, the book posits that economic crisis in a 30 year perspective appears a stronger explanatory factor for corporatist development than social partner strength, government strength and government ideology. Using qualitative methods to offer a nuanced insight into corporatism within these countries, Corporatism since the Great Recession will be a useful read for both academics and students in industrial relations, political economy and other social science disciplines addressing the formulation of work and welfare related policies.

'Packed with insights and details that will both amaze and appal you' - Oliver Bullough, author of Butler to the World Across the world, HSBC likes to sell itself as 'the world's local bank', the friendly face of corporate and personal finance. And yet, a decade ago, the same bank was hit with a record US fine of $1.9 billion for facilitating money laundering for 'drug kingpins and rogue nations'. In pursuit of their goal of becoming the biggest bank in the world, between 2003 to 2010, HSBC allowed El Chapo and the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most notorious and murderous criminal organizations in the world, to turn its ill-gotten money into clean dollars and thereby grow one of the deadliest drugs empires the world has ever seen. How did a bank, which boasts 'we're committed to helping protect the world's financial system on which millions of people depend, by only doing business with customers who meet our high standards of transparency' come to facilitate Mexico's richest drug baron? And how did a bank that had been named 'one of the best-run organizations in the world' become so entwined with one of the most barbaric groups of gangsters on the planet? Too Big to Jail is an extraordinary story brilliantly told by writer, commentator, and former editor of The Independent, Chris Blackhurst, that starts in Hong Kong and ranges across London, Washington, the Cayman Islands and Mexico, where HSBC saw the opportunity to become the largest bank in the world, and El Chapo seized the chance to fuel his murderous empire by laundering his drug proceeds through the bank. It brings together an extraordinary cast of politicians, bankers, drug dealers, FBI officers and whistle-blowers, and asks what price does greed have? Whose job is it to police global finance? And why did not a single person go to prison for facilitating the murderous expansion of a global drug empire?

Cultural (Im)mobilities and the Virocene - Mutating the Crisis (Hardcover): Rodanthi Tzanelli Cultural (Im)mobilities and the Virocene - Mutating the Crisis (Hardcover)
Rodanthi Tzanelli
R2,911 Discovery Miles 29 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This unique book considers COVID-19 as one pandemic amongst many, forming an episodic era of ebbing and flowing crises: the Virocene. Investigating COVID-19 in the context of the phenomenology of the crisis, it offers critical exploration of key theses in the study of mobility and futures, travel and citizenship. Through thought-provoking and insightful analysis Rodanthi Tzanelli suggests that COVID-19, and any highly infectious virus that follows, evolves into the new self-governing principle of various forms of movement, acting as an ontological magnet: as mobilities become reshaped by remote technologies, the very order of reality changes. Examining how one viral crisis can trigger more crises, prompting radical self-assessment in the new orders of life, Tzanelli suggests that the Virocene and the Anthropocene interact in ways that may lead to multiple ecological failures or produce the key to better futures. This interdisciplinary book analyses contemporary events from a range of perspectives, providing a large-scale qualitative assessment of recent phenomena. It will be a key resource for students and scholars of cultural sociology, sociological theory, geography, anthropology, environmental humanities and communication studies, while also benefiting practitioners in crisis management and policymaking interested in alternative approaches to pandemics and social change.

Oh Blogger! (Paperback): Wayne Shaw Oh Blogger! (Paperback)
Wayne Shaw
R467 Discovery Miles 4 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Seafordsurf Radio's very own DJ Wayne started his now acclaimed daily blog with the intention of sharing listener's contributions to his Monday evening show on SSR. The rants ranged from funny stories to serious subjects including immigration, benefit cheats MP's, and councillors. There are also reflections of personal experiences to topics in the daily news. Eurocrats and MEP's cannot hide from his rants. The scum fly tippers and the scourge of the travellers are all covered in his blog. Nothing is off limits to his rants and reflections of what goes on around us in our daily lives. From MPs who are supposed to be our guardian angels and Councillors who are voted into office to represent the local community to scumbag drivers, social housing and immigration, it all needs to be said. DJ Wayne also reflects on incidents which have happened throughout his lifetime and in particular the military service era when he served in the Royal Corps of Signals, reaching the rank of Full Corporal. Some are hilarious whilst others poignant and his comments hit the spot where politicians and councillors are afraid to tread.

The Green Book - Caring for Each Other Sustainably (Paperback): Bob Rhodes The Green Book - Caring for Each Other Sustainably (Paperback)
Bob Rhodes
R250 Discovery Miles 2 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

We won't make progress by doing the wrong things righter". The Green Book challenges current disregard for the inter-relationship between the State and the citizen in nurturing sustainable communities where love and care are valued more than profits. The format of stories, analyses, poems, verses and questions challenges and entertains. In Much More to Life than Services (2010) Bob Rhodes invited readers to consider the often unintended and destabilizing consequences that result from outsourcing so many aspects of our lives, and particularly those associated with caring for each other from the cradle to the grave, to public institutions and businesses. More than 40 years as an innovator, practitioner, thinker and leader in the community care field had caused him to doubt the sanity of converting care into commodities. Much More to Life was littered with inspiring stories and advice about how to secure good lives", rather than simple survival, in the face of disability. The Green Book is very different but complementary. Through stories, analyses, poems, sometimes humorous verses, parodies and songs it sets out to encourage readers to think about what really matters and how they might want to order their lives in accordance with those priorities. It asks questions about how we are socialised or, as Bob provocatively often poses, 'groomed' to accept and even support expectations of compliance and subordination that may not be in the interests of ourselves or those we love. Implicitly it challenges us to give a little time, now and then, to musing upon the meaning of our lives, the importance of our relationships, and, perhaps, the society we aspire to. It is a call to action. Bob's writing is bolstered by thought-provoking contributions from LivesThroughFriends stalwarts, Colin Campbell and Ken Davies.

'This book is not just about life, but about discovery itself. It is about error and hubris, but also about wonder and the reach of science. And it is bookended with the ultimate question: How do we define the thing that defines us?' - Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Gene We all assume we know what life is, but the more scientists learn about the living world - from protocells to brains, from zygotes to pandemic viruses - the harder they find it to locate the edges of life, where it begins and ends. What exactly does it mean to be alive? Is a virus alive? Is a foetus? Carl Zimmer investigates one of the biggest questions of all: What is life? The answer seems obvious until you try to seriously answer it. Is the apple sitting on your kitchen counter alive, or is only the apple tree it came from deserving of the word? If we can't answer that question here on earth, how will we know when and if we discover alien life on other worlds? The question hangs over some of society's most charged conflicts - whether a fertilized egg is a living person, for example, and when we ought to declare a person legally dead. Life's Edge is an utterly fascinating investigation by one of the most celebrated science writers of our time. Zimmer journeys through the strange experiments that have attempted to recreate life. Literally hundreds of definitions of what that should look like now exist, but none has yet emerged as an obvious winner. Lists of what living things have in common do not add up to a theory of life. It's never clear why some items on the list are essential and others not. Coronaviruses have altered the course of history, and yet many scientists maintain they are not alive. Chemists are creating droplets that can swarm, sense their environment, and multiply - have they made life in the lab? Whether he is handling pythons in Alabama or searching for hibernating bats in the Adirondacks, Zimmer revels in astounding examples of life at its most bizarre. He tries his own hand at evolving life in a test tube with unnerving results. Charting the obsession with Dr Frankenstein's monster and how Coleridge came to believe the whole universe was alive, Zimmer leads us all the way into the labs and minds of researchers working on engineering life from the ground up.

Handbook on Alternative Theories of Innovation (Hardcover): Benoit Godin, Gerald Gaglio, Dominique Vinck Handbook on Alternative Theories of Innovation (Hardcover)
Benoit Godin, Gerald Gaglio, Dominique Vinck
R6,353 Discovery Miles 63 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This insightful Handbook scrutinizes alternative concepts and approaches to the dominant economic or industrial theories of innovation. Providing an assessment of these approaches, it questions the absence of these neglected types of innovation and suggests diverse theories. International contributors provide a historical and critical analysis of all aspects of innovation, answering important questions such as 'are we just reinventing the wheel?'. Examining concepts that have existed for over a decade, chapters provide clarity on answering this question and investigate whether progress is actually being made. Split into seven parts, starting with the visions of innovation and reviewing multiple approaches and types of innovation, as well as utilising case studies to illustrate theories, this timely book provides an excellent update to this field. This Handbook will be an invaluable resource for scholars and researchers of business management and public policy as well as policy makers and stakeholders.

Saving Time - Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock (Hardcover): Jenny Odell Saving Time - Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock (Hardcover)
Jenny Odell
R627 R512 Discovery Miles 5 120 Save R115 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

A radical argument that we are living on the wrong clock, one that tells us time is money, and that embracing a new concept of time can open us up to bold, hopeful possibilities from the New York Times bestselling author of How to Do Nothing. Our daily experience, dominated by the corporate clock that so many of us contort ourselves to fit inside, is destroying us. It wasn't built for people, it was built for profit. This is a book that tears open the seams of reality as we know it-the way we experience time itself-and rearranges it, reimagining a world not centered around work, the office clock, or the profit motive. Explaining how we got to the point where time became money, Odell offers us new models to live by--inspired by pre-industrial cultures, ecological, and geological time--that make a more humane, more hopeful way of living seem possible. In this dazzling, subversive, and deeply hopeful reframing of time, Jenny Odell takes us on a journey through other temporal habitats. As planet-bound animals, we live inside shortening and lengthening days, alongside gardens growing, birds migrating, and cliffs eroding. The stretchy quality of waiting and desire, the way the present may suddenly feel marbled with childhood memory, the slow but sure procession of a pregnancy, or the time it takes to heal from injuries--physical or emotional. Odell urges us to become stewards of these different rhythms of life, to imagine a life, identity, and source of meaning outside of the world of work and profit, and to understand that the trajectory of our lives--or the life of the planet--is not a foregone conclusion. In that sense, "saving" time-recovering its fundamentally irreducible and inventive nature-could also mean that time saves us.
