Tantra is one of the most misunderstood of the esoteric
disciplines. In order to get a clear idea as to the nature of
Tantric ritual and belief it is necessary to go where Tantra is
still practiced and from where important Tantric teachings
originated a thousand years ago: the island of Java in present-day
Indonesia.
This book illustrates the history of Tantrism in Java with more
than a hundred photographs of temples, statues and iconography
dedicated to the system -- some rarely seen before, including the
recently-excavated "white temple" of Yogyakarta -- and accounts of
contemporary practices in the shrines, cemeteries and secret
schools of Java
It is this Tantra -- the Tantra of Java -- that has influenced
secret societies, mystics, alchemists, Kabbalists and magicians for
hundreds if not thousands of years. This book tells the story of
how human sexuality became a metaphor and a template for both
spiritual transformation and the manipulation of reality; of how
various sexual acts and psycho-biological states became the basis
for a comprehensive cosmology that incorporates every aspect of
human experience.
Sometimes the secrets are buried where you least expect to find
them. Sometimes they are hidden in plain sight. Sometimes... they
are both. In the largest Muslim country in the world we will
discover a path of Tantra so unique, yet so vibrant and alive, that
we will be astonished that no one had heard of it until now.
In Esotericism in African American Religious Experience: "There is
a Mystery" ..., Stephen C. Finley, Margarita Simon Guillory, and
Hugh R. Page, Jr. assemble twenty groundbreaking essays that
provide a rationale and parameters for Africana Esoteric Studies
(AES): a new trans-disciplinary enterprise focused on the
investigation of esoteric lore and practices in Africa and the
African Diaspora. The goals of this new field - while akin to those
of Religious Studies, Africana Studies, and Western Esoteric
Studies - are focused on the impulses that give rise to Africana
Esoteric Traditions (AETs) and the ways in which they can be
understood as loci where issues such as race, ethnicity, and
identity are engaged; and in which identity, embodiment,
resistance, and meaning are negotiated.
* Gives an account of the history, the theological basis, the
practice and the current state of the study of religion and
religions throughout the world * Combines a clear and non-technical
style of presentation with a structure and range of contributions
which reflect the richness and complexity of religion itself, of
the religions of the world and the study of religions *
Comprehensive index, bibliographies and suggestions for further
reading `Intriguing philosophical questions are raised about the
nature of religion and the qualities needed for studying it.' -
Times Higher Education Supplement `Excellent book ... remarkably
successful, impressive as much for the sheer scale of the
undertaking as for its consistent standard of analysis. It is a
fine achievement which will serve both as a very suitable textbook
for students and a reliable guide to the state of scholarship in
the History and Study of Religions.' - Heythrop Journal
This fascinating book explores how traumatic experience interacts
with unconscious phantasy based in folklore, the supernatural and
the occult. Drawing upon trauma research, case study vignettes, and
psychoanalytic theory, it explains how therapists can use
literature, the arts, and philosophy to work with clients who feel
cursed and manifest self-sabotaging states. The book examines the
challenges that can arise when working with this client population
and illustrates how to work through them while navigating potent
transferences and projective identifications. It's an important
read for students, psychotherapists, and counselors in the mental
health field.
Includes both significant previously published work and new
material. Offers a unique overview of Jung's psychology of alchemy
and its legacy. Takes into consideration important psychological
and philosophical suppositions in Jungian work and includes
dialogues with key post-Jungian thinkers such as Hillman and
Giegerich.
According to esoteric teachings we have an energy body of lighter,
less dense material that is connected to our physical bodies. Those
who can see it call it the aura and can sometimes tell the state of
a person's health by the way it appears. Those who use its energy
refer to the force as prana, chi, vital force, orgone or a number
of other names. There are seven chakras, or energy points, where
this energy collects in the etheric body. Working with the chakras
and these spiritual energies can play a big part in the psychic
development and enlightenment of those sensitive enough to work on
these levels. This book shows you how. Subjects include a chapter
on each chakra center; also Prana or Vitality, Force-Centres,
Kundalini, Healing, Mediumship, Birth, Death, Mesmerism,
Magnetisation of Objects, Ectoplasm, and more.
An overview essay and approximately 50 alphabetically arranged
reference entries explore the background and significance of
atheism and agnosticism in modern society. This is the age of
atheism and agnosticism. The number of people living without
religious belief and practice is quickly and dramatically rising.
Some experts call nonreligion, after Christianity and Islam, the
third largest "religion" in the world today. Understanding the
origins, history, variations, and impact of atheism and agnosticism
is crucial to getting a grasp of the meaning of the present and
gaining a glimpse of the future. Exploring some of the most
extraordinary people, events, and ideas of all time, this book
provides a fair, comprehensive, and engaging survey of all aspects
of contemporary atheism and agnosticism. An overview essay
discusses the background and social and political contexts of
unbelief, while a timeline highlights key events. Some 50
alphabetically arranged reference entries follow, with each
providing fundamental, objective information about particular
topics along with cross-references and suggestions for further
reading. The volume closes with an annotated bibliography of the
most important resources on atheism and agnosticism. An overview
essay surveys the background and significance of atheism and
agnosticism in today's world A timeline highlights key events in
the history of atheism and agnosticism Some 50 alphabetically
arranged reference entries provide essential information about
important topics related to atheism and agnosticism An annotated

The relationship between Nazism and occultism has been an object of
fascination and speculation for decades. Peter Staudenmaier's
Between Occultism and Nazism provides a detailed historical
examination centered on the anthroposophist movement founded by
Rudolf Steiner. Its surprising findings reveal a remarkable level
of Nazi support for Waldorf schools, biodynamic farming, and other
anthroposophist initiatives, even as Nazi officials attempted to
suppress occult tendencies. The book also includes an analysis of
anthroposophist involvement in the racial policies of Fascist
Italy. Based on extensive archival research, this study offers rich
material on controversial questions about the nature of esoteric
spirituality and alternative cultural ideals and their political
resonance.
mulig, for ikke a vekke ham.
A long-awaited new edition of the seminal text on the spiritual
system that is a convergence of Gnosticism and Haitian voodoo, The
Voudon Gnostic Workbook is a singular sacred work that is
comprehensive in scope -- from "how to be a lucky Hoodoo" to how
magick and voodoo intersect energetically, to esoteric time travel.
Complete with charts and graphs and instructive interdimensional
physics, The Voudon Gnostic Workbook is an "object of desire" among
students of the occult. Weiser's long-anticipated republication of
this rare text will be an event in the annals of esoteric
publishing, as the book itself is somewhat of an "unholy grail."
There are listservers devoted to it and much discussion of the
mysteries held within its pages. While The Voudon Gnostic Workbook
has remained a controversial book considered important for masters
of metaphysics, it recently came into popular culture and renewed
popularity when Grant Morrison revealed it had been the inspiration
for his cult comics The Invisibles, using the cribbed time travel
from Bertiaux' s masterwork. Voodoo is not an evil religion and is
much misunderstood. It derives from the Dahomean Gods called the
"Loa." Esoteric voodoo is actually a highly practical procedure for
leading us into making contact with the deepest levels of our being
and most ancient modes of consciousness. Michael Bertiaux's Voudon
Gnostic Workbook is the most comprehensive and illuminating
contemporary book on the subject. Launched out of a correspondence
course and series of classes for students and followers of Voudon
Gnosticism and the OTO, this seminal text is at once one of the
most mysterious and magnificent of all esoteric books.
This engaging and accessible textbook provides an introduction to
the study of ancient Jewish and Christian women in their
Hellenistic and Roman contexts. This is the first textbook
dedicated to introducing women's religious roles in Judaism and
Christianity in a way that is accessible to undergraduates from all
disciplines. The textbook provides brief, contextualising overviews
that then allow for deeper explorations of specific topics in
women's religion, including leadership, domestic ritual, women as
readers and writers of scripture, and as innovators in their
traditions. Using select examples from ancient sources, the
textbook provides teachers and students with the raw tools to begin
their own exploration of ancient religion. An introductory chapter
provides an outline of common hermeneutics or "lenses" through
which scholars approach the texts and artefacts of Judaism and
Christianity in antiquity. The textbook also features a glossary of
key terms, a list of further readings and discussion questions for
each topic, and activities for classroom use. In short, the book is
designed to be a complete, classroom-ready toolbox for teachers who
may have never taught this subject as well as for those already
familiar with it. Jewish and Christian Women in the Ancient
Mediterranean is intended for use in undergraduate classrooms, its
target audience undergraduate students and their instructors,
although Masters students may also find the book useful. In
addition, the book is accessible and lively enough that religious
communities' study groups and interested laypersons could employ
the book for their own education.
