This volume reproduces nineteen chapters and articles published
between 1991 through 2008, on Manichaeism, and its contacts with
Augustine of Hippo, its most famous convert and also best-known
adversary. The contents are divided into four parts: perceptions of
Mani within the Roman Empire, select aspects of Manichaean thought,
women in Manichaeism, and Manichaeism and Augustine. Though these
chapters and articles reproduce their originals, adjustments have
been made to include cross-referencing, newer editions, and the
like, all with the aim of rendering them more accessible to a new
readership among those who follow the fortunes of Mani's religion
in the Roman Empire and/or the "Manichaean" aspects of Augustine of
Hippo.
The reign of Peter the Great (1672-1725) was marked by an
unprecedented wave of reform in Russia. This book provides an
innovative reappraisal of the Petrine Age, in which hitherto
neglected aspects of the tsar's transformation of his country are
studied. More specifically, the reforms enacted by the tsar are
assessed in light of the religious notion of instauration - a

a historical and cultural analysis of the impact of Western

The Macarian writings are among the most important and influential
works of the early Christian ascetic and mystical tradition. This
book offers an introduction to the work of Macarius-Symeon
(commonly referred to as Pseudo-Macarius), outlining the lineaments
of his teaching and the historical context of his works. The book
goes on to examine and re-evaluate the complex question of his
relationship with the Messalian tendency and to explore the nature
of his theological and spiritual legacy in the later Christian
tradition. In so doing the book also offers substantial treatments
of the work of Mark the Monk, Diadochus of Photice, Abba Isaiah,
and Maximus Confessor. It stands therefore not only as an
exploration of the teaching and legacy of Macarius-Symeon but also
as a chapter in the history of the Christian spiritual tradition.

the charlatanry that was sometimes a part of the Society's modus
operandi, and gives the early history of the Society's bid for
political power, particularly its role as an agent of British
imperialism in India. It is fitting that this work should finally
appear in English just at this moment, when the influence of
pseudo-esoteric spiritualities on global politics is probably
greater than ever before in Western history.

story of a Englishman who gave up a job in journalism to spend
fourteen years with the controversial Indian mystic Osho, also
known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and frequently referred to as 'the
sex guru'. His guru was always controversial with his teachings on

meditation and personal transformation. According to the author's

refusal to tread the path of a spiritual saint, that became the

seeker.
