A newly revised and updated 8th edition of the world's bestselling
thesaurus--the only thesaurus based on Peter Roget's original
reference classic of 1852. This hardcover thumb-indexed edition
includes more than 443,000 words and phrases grouped into 1,075
categories. The revolutionary achievement of Dr. Roget was his
development of a new principle: the grouping of words according to
ideas. If the user cannot find something in a reference book, it is
often because of the restriction of searching alphabetically by
'known' headwords. Dr. Roget's thesaurus thus reversed the access
to allow the user to find a word from another word, a concept or an
idea. When in 1852 Roget published the first book ever to realize
this concept with thoroughness and precision, he called it a
"thesaurus" (from the Greek and Latin, meaning "treasury" or
"storehouse"). And thesaurus it has remained to this day. The
ultimate reference tool, this new edition contains over 443,000
words and phrases grouped into 1,075 numbered categories. Within
each category you'll find all the parts of speech, frequent
cross-references, commonly-used words singled out in boldface,
quotes that puts words into context, hundreds of fascinating and
idiosyncratic word lists and much more. If you're a writer who
needs help organizing a thought or mastering the nuance of
expression, Roget's International Thesaurus(R) remains the first
source to turn to.
Like the first volume, The Handbook of Language and Ethnic
Identity, Volume 2 is a reference work on the interconnection
between language and ethnic identity. In this volume, 37 new essays
provide a systematic look at different language and ethnic identity
efforts, assess their relative successes and failures, and place
the cases on a success-failure continuum. The reasons for these
failures and successes and the linguistic, social, and political
contexts involved are subtle and highly complex. Some of these
factors have to do with whether the language is considered a
dialect, as in the cases of Bavarian, Ebonics, and Scots
(considered to be dialects of German, American English, and British
English, respectively). Other factors have to do with government
policy, as in the cases of Basque and Navajo. Still other factors
are historical, such as the way Canaanite was supplanted in
present-day Israel by another classical language-Hebrew.
Although the volume offers considerable sophistication in the
treatment of language, ethnicity and identity, it has been written
for the non-specialized reader, whether student or layperson. The
contributors are an international group of well-known scholars in a
range of fields. Fishman and Garcia provide a detailed introduction
that addresses the difficulty of assessing the success or failure
of a language. They also present a conclusion that integrates the
data presented in the volume."
Organizing Words presents a series of essays on some 220 widely
used--and much debated--terms in the social sciences, and
organization studies. Each essay explores the meanings and uses of
the word; and also the controversies they have sparked. The book
aims to be a first port of call for students, researchers and
scholars who wish to familiarize themselves with these key ideas
and use them in their own work.
The book is neither an encyclopaedia nor a dictionary, but a
thesaurus. As such it combines both the original meaning of a
thesaurus as a treasure trove, with its more contemporary
characteristics of an accessible and practical resource.
Primarily aimed to those interested in social and organizational
studies, it will appeal to all those interested in the human
sciences. It does not claim to be canonical or all-inclusive, but
each entry seeks to enlighten and help, without patronizing or
obscuring disagreements and difficulties. The book seeks to be
re-assuring without being complacent or "comfortable," to be
authoritative without being doctrinaire, and to be critical without
being destructive.
Words help us express ourselves, and make sense of our experiences
